Mastodon absolutely needs more journalists. We should not have millions of people boosting one another’s ideas without a solid contingent of people in here professionally trained to vet stories, check facts, and use best practices for sharing news. It is, imo, an urgent issue & critical for the ongoing success of the fediverse

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger I hear what you're saying, and I agree that grounded expertise is of utmost importance when it comes to bounding off the edges of objetive reality - but a preponderance of credentialed journalists these days seem to be rather lacking in the "reason and critical thought" department (given how few of them have bothered to leave - or at least diversify away from - Twitter). I doubt that engaging such a group is as critical to the survival of the Fediverse as all that.

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@seachanger I wouldn't dream of glossing over the importance of journalism in our society! However, I'm skeptical of the current rank-and-file based on their behavior vis-a-vis speaking harsh truths to the very powerful - too few seem to take principled stands when it matters. Maybe it's a consequence of the whole dysfunctional system, but that's a moot point.

That said, I want to believe more in journalists! I am ready to, just as soon as we stop seeing press releases passed off as hard news.

@Sardonicus This is so classic, and hopefully the story behind it doesn't detract from anyone's enjoyment of it: it's not a real quote! It was written by editorial staff at the Portland Mercury as part of a gag column called "Frank Cassano's Imbecile Parade," where a question was featured each week, along with a few (again, made-up) answers, each of which was followed by a bit of color commentary from "Frank Cassano" (again, the Mercury's editorial staff) at the end.

Our stove top has touch controls. It's ridiculous. Ah yes, I will touch the glass top of my stove with my fingers while using it, thereby risking injury or at the very least having to put my finger on a greasy stove top. Because when people cook on a stove top, grease splatters out of hot pans all over. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea? For the love of god just give me some fucking knobs

You know what knobs are also good for? Going instantly from any setting to any other setting. With this touch interface bullshit if I wanna turn off one hob from the highest setting without turning off all hobs I have to plonk my finger down and wait for it to slowly cycle down from 9 to 0, going through all full and half digits on the way

If this is what a "luxury cooking experience" feels like I don't fucking want it

doctorLURK,
@doctorLURK@mastodon.social avatar

@eniko With you 100%! When the time came to replace our busted clothes dryer, we spent an extra ~$200 to get a "commercial" dryer with two rugged manual knobs, one mechanical plunger-style Start button, and nothing more to fiddle with. We've never regretted it, and we certainly don't miss the worthless electronic bells and whistles that seem to plague all "home" dryers these days. We see the price less as "paying more for fewer features" and more as "paying more for usability and reliability."

Don't forget that it's possible (and normal, even) to care about more than one thing at the same time. "How can you talk about X with Y going on" may be appropriate for an immediate life-or-death situation, but it's usually just disingenuous on social media.

This #FollowGraph tool is theoretically interesting, but almost everyone it kicks out for me is in #tech. A few #ScienceFiction writers, a few celebrities (no thanks), and basically no one from #ComicBooks, #ProgressiveRock, #Webcomics, #MagicTheGathering, or #AudioDrama.

Basically it seems like the non-tech groups of people I followed on #Twitter have had negligible adoption of #Mastodon.

doctorLURK,

@alternativeto I forcibly ripped MS Edge out of my Win11 PC back in January. It's amazing how deeply enmeshed Edge is with the rest of the OS - I had to find a handful of replacements for things like Picture Viewer, and I had to tear Windows Update's proverbial throat out, too, or it'd keep reinstalling Edge without my permission. Removing Edge has also caused some other weird (but avoidable) bugs.

Nevertheless, as time passes, I become more and more convinced that I made the right move.

Sometimes I think about how had one of the best stories of any PS2 JRPG, but nobody really remembers or thinks about it. The Barows and Godwin families were both such interesting factions, and the depictions of courtly intrigue/skullduggery were excellent, especially for the time and medium in question.

It's a damn shame how many creative works never get recognized the way they deserve to be. There's just too much stuff to laud all of it, I suppose.

This is how the New York Times describes Mastodon: “a Twitter clone sliced into communities”.

I don’t think that’s a good description but maybe I’m quibbling.

Nevertheless, until Mastodon supports groups, I don’t use it for the communities. I use Friendica instead for that feature. In fact, I don’t think most Mastodon users realize that’s possible on the Fediverse.

But maybe the New York Times is referring to servers as “communities”.

Hello! Here's my intro, since we're doing that at the moment.

I'm a cantankerous, self-doubting 41-year-old cishet (m) digital marketer/digital marketing skeptic. If you follow me, expect only occasional posting. Favorite things to post about:

#politics (far left)
#jokes (dumb, absurd, and/or mildly inappropriate)
#magic (the gathering)
#DeepThoughts (with or without Jack Handey)

I've also been a (non-exclusionary!) nerd all my life, but I'm not really interested in competitive fandoms.
