Okay, since I'm on laundry today, a little story.

When hubs and I first got married, we were very much enjoying our little Honeymoon Bubble, and we were being lazy as Hell. We didn't do many chores, but the laundry we really let go. We weren't wearing many clothes at home anyway, so why bother. Anyhow, after weeks we finally reached the swimming suit bottoms situation, and decided it was time. It was loads and loads of laundry that needed done, so I had my husband back the trunk of the car up to a window of the house, then he popped the trunk, and I started tossing laundry out of the window into the trunk. We went to the bank, got about $30 bucks in quarters, and found the emptiest laundry mat we could, and did it all in one fell swoop. We folded it all and loaded it back into the car using those wheeled laundry carts. We never let it get that bad again, and decided it was time to be adults, and do regular chores, but it still makes me laugh imagining what the neighbors and the laundry attendant thought.

Feel free to share your own laundry story, if you feel like it, I love hearing people's stories!

@RickiTarr we decided at one point that it was time to take apart the dryer and clean it out. We'd had it for, oh, ten years at that point. The dryness sensor was busted, but it worked fine on a timer and we didn't want to replace it. YouTube videos were watched, a plan was figured out, we started taking it apart.

We also had a dog with this thick fur that got everywhere, I should mention. And sure enough it was all through the dryer, in behind the drum, in the control area, everywhere. So I grabbed the Shop Vac, plugged it in, and turned it on.

This is how I discovered Shop Vacs have a blow mode.

@goldstein we used old laptops and a dumb TV for many years. This year we upgraded to a Raspberry Pi and a newer dumb tv. We stream via browser. Works fine for any streaming service we have tried. We only upgrade the hardware when it dies. I am not sure how much longer we can keep it up, but as long as we can manage it we will.

Being a woman feels really hard sometimes... 😔😔” Picture of cut lips and hand.

I have been cat called so many times running, and once a young man slapped my bum from behind and tried to pull me into the bushes, but I think this is worse. Why the fuck is women feeling powerful through running something men feel compelled to try and take away?

At that point in the cat ownership lifecycle where we have purchased the largest litterboxes we can find to accomodate Toby not being able to squat so well to use it cleanly. Also brainstorming ways to limit the damage and cleanup if things get worse.

As we do this, Toby is having a case of 13-year old arthritic cat with bad knees zoomies and beating the crap out of 3-year old Hector.

RickiTarr, to random
@RickiTarr@beige.party avatar

Something I've noticed a lot lately, is that especially Boomer women, but honestly, women in general, don't seem to ask for what they want or need in a direct way. I notice this a lot with my Mom and her friends. Instead of just asking for what they need directly they tell a story, to ask in a roundabout way. For instance, my Mom needed help this morning, and Instead of just saying, "Hey, I dropped my remote, can you pick it up for me?" She tells a one minute story about what happened, no ask, and eventually I get the point, and then suggest that I come pick it up. Or if one of her friends wants to do something like have a birthday party for a friend, they don't say "We should have a party!" They say, It's Sarah's Birthday coming up, you know she likes surprises, what does everyone think we should do?"

I often wonder if this is why older people think younger women are rude and demanding, because younger people often just ask for what they want and need in a more direct way. But also it's probably just straight up sexism, because men are supposed to make decisions, and women are supposed to make suggestions.

What do you all think? Is this just me? Have you experienced something similar?

commonst,
@commonst@vivaldi.net avatar

@RickiTarr Gen X here, and my partner is usually pointing out that I don't just ask for what I need. I grew up in an abusive home so asking directly was not encouraged or accepted. It also was implicit outside the home that I was not to be a bother or a problem. I'm still working on how to improve with this, even when I know I do it, because it was ingrained in me that much

Note: this is about being widowed, but also one of those pieces of life that's great comedy.

A couple weeks before my first husband had a sudden stroke, he'd gotten a speeding ticket. In the chaos that ensued, I'd forgotten about it, and I got one of those notices that said our car's registration would be suspended if he didn't appear and pay his fine.

(At the time of his death, all three cars happened to be registered in his name. This was a bad idea, just sayin'.)

commonst,
@commonst@vivaldi.net avatar

@deirdresm excellent handling of the situation. That clerk deserved that.

When my mother died, the fellow at the bank I dealt with to set up the estate account immediately lost interest when he realised there wasn't a sizable amount of money involved, and therefore no upsell for financial services. He said he would call back and never did.

After trying for long enough to get hold of him that my lawyer was getting worried about payment, I made an appointment with the branch manager. At this point I was tired of explaining things, tired of roadblocks (there were a number of weird things with the estate), and just burst into tears in her office. She had the account set up in 10 minutes, she sent payment to the lawyer herself, and it is on my file that I will only ever deal with her for anything going forward at that branch. My lawyer also said he got a lovely apology letter from her for delay in payment.
