Remember the petition about "Require videogame publishers to keep games they have sold in a working state" & the response saying "Those selling games must comply with UK consumer law. They must provide clear information and allow continued access to games if sold on the understanding that they will remain playable indefinitely."

Well the Petitions Committee has stepped in and say it did not respond directly to the petitiion request

FrostyPops, to random

@peter Hi Peter, It's been almost a year since your post about the Zenbook Duo (great article btw).

Would you still recommend it for someone wanting to run Linux Mint?

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@FrostyPops I would still recommend it, it's been working perfectly for me with Linux Mint for the last 10 months.

The only issue I've had was that hibernation can cause issues with the screens, so if the lid is closed then opening it can cause the touch screens to fail like I mentioned in the article.

However, as I rarely use that it's not really a problem - I tend to fully shutdown each time.

A 21 year old harddrive that I thought I had lost years ago.

Yes, it's a harddrive in the CF (Compact Flash) form factor from 2003 which spins at 4200 RPM.

I had this originally for use with an early Canon digital SLR camera I had at the time.

Need to find the CF USB adapter to see if it's still usable or has anything on it.

Are those passthrough RJ45 crimps easier to use?

I struggle (I think possibly due to my Dyspraxia) getting the wires in the right order when making an ethernet cable and interested if that style would be easier.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@Ryanteck I've found that they are a lot easier as like you I don't always get them in the right order the first time.

Looks like 's own M.2 hat has been released this morning & it's ยฃ11.50 / $12

Looks compact and supports the active cooler.

The downside I can see is that it only supports 2230 & 2242 M.2 devices, so the more common 2280 M.2 ssd's won't fit.

https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/m-2-hat-on-sale-now-for-12/

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@acb It doesn't look like it other than it's a HAT so goes on top, so would be compatible with most other cases, as Pimoroni's ones go underneath the PI - the only issue I have with the 2 PI's I have the Pimoroni base on that I can't fit them in a case.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

Well the #raspberryPi M.2 hat is installed & it's booting from a 1Tb NVMe drive.

It's a lot less fiddly than the base units I have & there's clearance so it doesn't affect the active cooler.

That said it's a tight fit for the official case & the screws it comes with are too short for the case so you need longer screws to secure it completely.

Also the top is very tight & without those screws it's easy to accidentally remove the hat by accident when powered up if it's used.

Browsing eBay and there's an Apple IIe with the description in French:

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท "Ordinateur Apple IIe Les condensateurs d'alimentation ont รฉtรฉ changรฉs

So I put the text into a translator and got:

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง "Computer Apple IIe Food condensers have been changed"

Food condensers? I'm going to presume that's Capacitors ๐Ÿคฃ

so i got a "sip2sim" eSIM from @aaisp... now my phone connects straight to whatever SIP server i configure (via VoLTE, not an app) instead of going through some awful telco services.

and as a bonus it can roam between EE and O2 so i get much better reception at home.

i'm glad they managed to "un-cancel" this service because it's pretty handy.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@lw @aaisp I need to check if it's a setting on my phone but I've had the latest SIM in my phone since yesterday & I'm thinking it's not roaming from EE & O2, as there's been the odd time I've had no signal but the primary SIM is Giffgaff which is O2 but has had signal.

So far though the new Sims working well as I have it connected to my home PBX (Firebrick).

Testing it right now but good timing as I used the old service for work & I'll be needing it as I'm starting to look for a new job

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@lw @aaisp that could be affecting it.

Will be testing it more over the next few days.

Just that a couple of places I go, eg the pub, had poor signal but the old SIM handled that (was an EU SIM so it did roam).

The new @aaisp Sip2sim arrived this morning & is working perfectly with my pbx.

peter,
@peter@area51.social avatar

@piofthings @aaisp it's a sim card which the phone thinks is a normal connection but the other end is VoIP so you can connect your mobile as an extension like I have, or to a different non mobile number.

https://www.aa.net.uk/voice-and-mobile/sip2sim/

There's a retro community which use old school analogue pbx's & I know some used the old service (which ended in April) to connect to that system
