New arrival - moah RAM!! 😍

My trusty (well, until recently) 20 year old car suffered from a rapid unscheduled disassembly on the rear axle a couple of days ago. Thankfully, it broke down while it was parked. It’s gone to the trash compactor by now and I’m going to try to live without owning a car. Better for the climate (and my wallet) anyway. Cycling, public transport and car sharing it is from now on. Farewell, old rustbucket! We had some good times! 🫡

Bit of an experiment here but...

Watch this video, then if you care about Indie dev at all, consider buying the game.

I've spent more than this on random C64 and Amiga titles, so for me it's a no brainer. It looks charming.

Let's see if we can make this successful.

Inside this unassuming box, lies something special...

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Whatever could it be in this new arrival? 🤔

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Let's take a look at the label on top of the box...

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Why, look! What a thing it is!

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

A key had escaped but I caught it and reapplied it. Quite a sight though 😍

@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Out with the A500 keyboard I'd "persuaded" to fit in the A1200 case ..

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

... and in with the Rastport!

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

But will it work? 🤔

New arrival, thanks to a kind soul at work!

Needs a clean but I'm told it works. Peering inside, no battery leakage and caps look okay - though there's lots of dust. Slight cracks on front cover but otherwise intact.

Okay, took me a while to realize the issue here as this wouldn't boot up. Turns out the answer is in this shot (can you spot it?)

Hints: it wasn't the jumper settings on the adapter, and the succesful chime means nothing 😉

EDIT: I should have been clearer here, the shot shown is actually after I resolved the issue. Before this, I simply got a chime and... nothing else. No sync, no disk icon, no boot - nothing.

Looks like these two capacitors have probably started leaking, from the color of the crud around them. No real damage yet though, it appears. The other caps look to be currently okay.

I'll replace all of them though, 11 on here apparently. I think I may even have them in stock.

Then I guess I should wash the board in IPA (probably water first) before I play with the machine - which I'm quite interested in doing since it looks to be one of the more powerful 68k machines from what I've read - perhaps quite noticeably more than my IIci..?

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Yup those caps were definitely leaking. Also, this marks the first time I've used the Adrian Black "push down and twist" method of cap removal. I've been scared to try that before but wow did it make light work of these. Look Ma no damage! 😁

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

I do love this completely screwless design! Everything removable without tools.

Only issue with it after this amount of time of course is the possibly brittle plastic. So far I've broken nothing but I expect it's probably just a matter of time...

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Caps replaced. Believe it or not this board has been cleaned several times, still looks a bit grubby. (Not used the sonic cleaner though). Also, spot the odd one out - I didn't run out of 47uF Panasonics, honest! 😏

Going to leave it overnight before trying it, as I really want to make sure that CPU socket has dried out completely (IPA soaked to force water out, but still).

Most important test passed! 😎👍

Burn in test shall be sitting at the Monte Carlo scene in Indy, complete with totally not annoying music 😁

Been playing around with the LC for a bit, and it is clearly a lot faster than the IIci (my IIci has a cache card but just the base 030, and 128MB of RAM).

Marathon is totally playable in the UI visible mode, though full screen is a bit jerky. Still, it was unusable on the IIci in any configuration, unless you're fine with postage stamp sized view windows.

I really do need more memory on the LC 475 though, even stuff that runs often needs to close Finder windows to do so. It's a bit tight!

retrotechtive,
@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Having a wider variety of graphics modes is nice too. Now, if only the LC came in the same form factor as the IIci... 😉

@retrotechtive@retrochat.online avatar

Turns out that old monitor I got from a thrift store a few weeks ago and then fixed is pretty darned perfect on this LC 475!! Very happy with that!
