Oh hey! Has anyone got a link to a really amazing article/resource on the reclaiming of slurs, how their use becomes newly acceptable in marginalised communities, etc? Something that would be good to send to a well-meaning newbie who wants to learn more, kinda thing?

cassolotl, to disability
@cassolotl@eldritch.cafe avatar

I'm only just scraping by and the UK government are proposing to take away PIP (a disability benefit), which would be HALF of my income wiped out: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn0ry09d50wo "Reforms to personal independence payments (PIP) could include stopping regular cash payments, and instead offering claimants one-off grants for things like home adaptations."

Genuinely absolutely terrifying.

Can anyone join in with an (hopefully!) overwhelming cascade of unique emails to their MP opposing this? https://www.writetothem.com makes it very quick and easy. They're proposing to replace it with one-off grants that the individual can apply for, which is absurd and horrifying, so feel free to point out how that won't work as well!

Imagine being the guy (gn) who arbitrarily decided that ADHD and autism must be mutually exclusive and getting the whole posse of psychs to go along with it for decades, only to find that about 75% of people with one also have the other?? So embarrassing 🙈

Anyway this article is pretty good:

I bought this lovely linen tunic from Etsy in "light grey" (see colour swatch pic), it's XL (see size guide), and it doesn't fit me - but I have been so busy that I wasn't able to return it in time!

It was pretty expensive and it is quite lovely, so I thought I would offer it up here. Would anyone like to make me an offer? (Don't worry about whether I'll be offended by your offer, I can't return it so any offer is welcome!)

"The end of landlords: the surprisingly simple solution to the UK housing crisis"

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/mar/19/end-of-landlords-surprisingly-simple-solution-to-uk-housing-crisis

'Over the last 25 years, there has not just been a constant surplus of homes per household, but the ratio has been modestly growing while our living situations have been getting so much worse.'

'We now find ourselves in a situation where one in every 21 adults in the UK is a landlord. We have four times as many landlords as teachers. As a consequence, virtually everyone struggles to afford a home that meets their needs despite a net gain in housing stock.'

'Where Adam Smith and Karl Marx found common ground was in the idea that everyone’s interests are aligned against landlords: they are an economic deadweight.'

If you use a screen reader and have a Github account, consider commenting on this feature request:

"Add a way to filter posts that contain images with no alt text"
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/29496

If you don't use a screen reader, please boost this post rather than commenting on the Github issue.

cassolotl,
@cassolotl@eldritch.cafe avatar

The number of self-righteous people replying to say that they "don't use a screen reader but..." and then speaking in favour of this feature is like... ugh.

I don't have a strong opinion either way, because I don't have enough information. One accessibility consultant has commented, which is good, but still no people who need alt text, e.g. visually impaired people. [Edit: I totally skated over the part where the accessibility consultant said they were blind, I am a doofus. 🤦]

If any visually impaired people tell us that this is a good idea or a bad idea in their opinion I would love that so much. But if people who don't need alt text could please stop talking. Just. Plz.

cassolotl,
@cassolotl@eldritch.cafe avatar

People who use , imagine a feature on your instance where you can automatically hide any post that contains images/videos without alt text.

If you reply with an opinion and YOU PERSONALLY don't need alt text for accessibility reasons, I will probably block you.

In "feeling smug" news, today I asked someone for a link to the place where they bought their thing online, and they sent me the link and it was a third-party seller on Amazon, so I googled and found that seller's homepage and bought the item there for 11% cheaper.

Apparently that's a thing, when you find something on Amazon from a third-party seller sometimes they have their own homepage where you can buy the same item but cheaper, because Amazon take a cut.

username gallusrostromegalus: I took the bus for three years when I lived in Honolulu and haven't lived anywhere with even usable public transit since, but in those three years I had dozens of utterly bizarre experiences that were also Perfectly Normal. This is because the human condition is vast and also Very fucking Weird. Kid one the bus next to me whose backpack starts moving and it turns out he's got three chickens and a painted turtle he caught in there? This is Perfectly Normal. Humans have been catching small game and transporting it home in whatever they had since we invented bags to put chickens and turtles in. I traded him three king-size snickers bars I had on me for the turtle because I vaguely remembered that many freshwater turtles were toxic to eat (incorrectly, as it turns out, but this was when I still had a Nokia Brick that lived a blissful, internet-free existence), and didn't want him accidentally poisoning his family, but didn't want to just. Steal his hard-won turtle. This is Perfectly Normal. Humans have been cautious about poisons, looking out for strangers kids and bartering shit since before we were technically humans, probably.
a continuation of username gallusrostromegalus post: Having acquired a turtle, I now needed to transport the turtle to the on-campus pond that effectively served as an Invasive Freshwater Turtle Containment Zone, but did not have a bag that could adequately contain him so I had to sit the rest of that bus ride, at the station and all through the next bus ride holding the turtle like the wond's angriest hamburger. Multiple people were curious about and delighted with the turtle. This is Perfectly Normal. Humans love an animal, especially one that is capable of appearing grumpy, and hands are for holding things. By the time I got back to Campus, the anthropology and child psychology building that the Invasive Turtle Containment Pond was in had closed, so I had to figure out how to climb the tree over the wall and get down off the roof while holding The World's Angriest And Sharpest Hamburger. I eventually ended up having to briefly shove the turtle into by bra to get up to the initial branch and off the roof without breaking an ankle. This is Perfectly Normal. Humans are, as a species, a bunch of barely-evolved arboreal frugivores and really good at Tree Physics, and I don't know a single titty-having bitch out there that hasn't used their bra as Emergency Pockets at least once, if not daily. I released the turtle into the Turtle Containment Pond and then had to solve the problem of getting back OUT of the locked building, but Nokia Brick never loses a signal or drops a call (including that time I accidentally dropped it off a 13-story building in the middle of a call to my parents and the damn thing BOUNCED but kept the line open. I miss that phone every day.) and while campus security has been carefully trained to not let people IN to places without proper ID and a call to someone inside, they assume that if you got locked in somewhere, that you got in by legitimate means and not Lemur Shenanigans, so i just called them, apologized that I'd been working late with headphones on and didn't realize I'd been locked in. This is Perfectly Normal, people have been lying to cops since laws were invented, and will continue to do so because all cops are bastards.

I've just finished the second pair, and they're exactly the same as the above, except that the colours are reversed - so, red at the cuff, rainbow around the wrist, and blue/pink/white at the knuckles.

It's night at the moment so the light isn't great for photography. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow. :)

BUT if you feel like my description was evocative enough, feel free to nab them for £20 plus P&P from the UK.

hive mind: i need incongruous names for at least two cats, 1 syllable or at most 2 short ones. The first one we meet was Parsley for a wee while but is currently called Squirrel. There is also a goat named Sheep (after the story's only reader).
I don't think there will be any dogs, more independent animals suit the story better, but something more improbable to live in the garden with the goat would be grand. But not a snake, I'm not doing that to myself

The SAND RAMP

It was installed when my friend complained to the council that there was no way to get down off the pavement and back up the other side as a wheelchair user while the pavement works (courtesy of the council) are happening.

Photo 1: Before I used it.
Photo 2: After I used it in my wheelchair.
Photo 3: The groove left by my wheels, which are at least an inch deep in places, which explains why my push rims (and therefore my hands) are covered in sand now. This photo also shows (middle-right) that after one wheelchair use it is crumbling and splitting apart like a wet sandcastle, because it is a wet sandcastle.
