Reinforcement Learning: A Game-Changer for Humanoid Robots?

This innovative AI technique allows robots to learn through trial and error, paving the way for robots that can adapt and perform complex tasks.

Why does childhood feel so much better?

🌶️Not because you were young, but because you were present in the moment.

@andrasbacsai Not really. The only thing I miss from my youth is that everything didn't hurt all the time back then. I'm not sure I would trade it for the anxiety, the bullying, and everyone showing me I'm not welcome. I suppose it's different for normies.

What do you think they do? Would you know the difference between the two without looking it up? What happens if you mix them up? How significant is the single underscore there?

I'm still slowly working on improving my homebrew CircuitPython game console. Recently I tackled the problem of screws – they don't work very well with the acrylic case, tend to either be too tight or fall off. So I tried something new: solderable nuts. They can be pick-and-placed and reflowed, and they give you very good way of getting the screws in.

I also experimented with a Xiao S3, but I think that I will switch to an ESP32-S3 WROOM module instead. More testing is required with the S3.

@jonbro Right now with laser-cut buttons, I use a sticky tape from the underneath. I was thinking that I could print it as a sticker for the back side of the front plate, with a hole for the display and holes for the buttons, with small tongues to hold them.

But right now I'm thinking I will probably just 3D print the buttons, and add a flange to hold them in, like all the handhelds do.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonbro I was thinking about it, but the flange would need to be pretty thin in my case, and you can't easily order thin laser-cut acrylic, and also I really wanted transparent acrylic, and that looks really bad when glued.

In other news, the XIao ESP32-S3 version of uGame works. I didn't assemble the battery circuit, because I'm too lazy and I already have that part fixed (and because I started thinking about switching to LIPO after all).

Next step, I want to test ESP32-S3 with a parallel version of that display, and if that works, I will make another version of the console with the WROOM module instead of the Xiao.

I also want to try 3D printed buttons.

If all that works, it might be a pretty decent device.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

It looks like it would mostly fit. And for the battery, I could use a Nokia BL-5C – it's nice and flat, and easy to buy, and I even found a connector for it.
Now I need to test the parallel display.

Isn't it funny that in English the end of the queue is where you enter it, and the beginning is where you exit?

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@mykhaylo In Polish you would enter at the back of the queue, and exit at the front, which makes sense to me, because that's usually how all the people in the queue are facing. If you ask people in a queue where it begins, they will point you to the back, because that's where you begin the process of waiting in the queue.

Is it just me, or is the eternal ping-pong between personal computing and computing infrastructure speeding up?

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@travisfw No, I mean this thing where we build a large and expensive machine to be able to do a useful thing, then technology gets cheaper and someone makes a cheap stripped down version of it that barely works that sells on the hype of the expensive thing, then people figure out how to actually do semi-useful things with it and the technology gets even cheaper and the cheap devices become more powerful, then we put a lot of the cheap devices together to get a poor version of the expensive one

@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

I bought something on #Amazon (local stores didn't have it), and it took Amazon 11 days to ship, and then after a month of waiting now the order page has this sentence in bold:

>> Your package may be lost

I genuinely wonder how such a large package (~0.5kg and perhaps 40cmx15cmx15cm) in this day and age can be "lost"! don't they have some sort of ledger in postal services? After all, we are not talking about network connection back in 80s with such massive packet loss!!

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mehrad in my experience, they probably never shipped it, just printed a shipping label to give you a tracking number when Amazon required it

I'm curious who is at the moment really happy with their job based on criteria like "I'm doing something useful", "I'm doing it with the tools I like", "It's aligned with my ethics" and "Really good team actually collaborating"? That's usually my top criteria along with the expectation that I don't earn below the gender pay gap.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@sushee I always assumed that if any of those things were true, then I would do the thing for free anyways, and so nobody is going to pay me for doing the thing.

@piggo @wolf480pl You know, if you as an average Pole about any of this, they won't be able to not only explain any of it, but even to correctly conjugate themselves. It comes up so rarely, that nobody is entirely sure how it should be said.
