Both the Seattle Times and KUOW are running big stories today about the just released Bumbershoot lineup. That’s cool, but Bumbershoot is months away.

This weekend is the Northwest Folklife Festival at the Seattle Center with tons of live music and arts available for your cultural enrichment. They don’t sell tickets but do ask for a donation on entry. Full schedule here:

https://nwfolklife.org/festival/schedule/in-person-schedule.html

I’m performing Sunday the 26th at 3pm at the Storm Welcome stage.

@Lana One day while hiking in Olympic National Park my wife and I came across eight different bears — including a mother and cub quite close to us. The behavior of the bears was predictable and not one of those bears gave us any kind trouble. This is a better success rate than I have had in my history of chance encounters with men in any environment. As a man I would be safer meeting a bear than myself.

All that said I have a built-in irrational fear of bears. It’s embarrassing.

The latest obsession for celebrity fans is the romance between actor Callum Turner and singer Dua Lipa. It's just the latest example of a so-called parasocial relationship, where fans feel like they genuinely know celebrities, leading to feelings of ownership, protectiveness, and sometimes disappointment if a romance ends or a star does or says something "wrong." Here's a story from Stylecaster examining the phenomenon. But we want to know, do you think this is really a fresh phenomenon, or is it just regular old fandom and celeb culture with a swanky new name.

There are no categories for animals in the Academy Awards, though last month, the Academy announced on X, "The Oscar for bestest boi goes to Messi from Anatomy of a Fall." John Williams is among 19 new members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The 92-year-old composer has won five of the 53 Oscars he was nominated for, and also conducted the Boston Pops for more than a decade and has composed classical concertos. Here's a story from ABC on Williams and the other 18 inductees to the Academy of Arts this year, which included composer Terence Blanchard, novelist Alice McDermott and artist Matthew Barney. We want to know, which is your favorite of these (some answers are movies and others are franchises where more appropriate).

at least if you're going downhill because you drop down a bit in altitude and suddenly it is fukin JUNE and people are in shorts and short sleeves and it's really nice UNLESS

you're the dumbass wearing the winter jacket

in which case you are CAPTAIN TOASTE

Here is the appellate court's denial of Trump's claim of immunity:
https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415/gov.uscourts.cadc.40415.1208593677.0.pdf

The decision opens by summarizing the allegations in the indictment, being careful to add that guilt hasn't yet been determined.

The court then dismisses the idea that they don't have jurisdiction over the issue and concludes that it does.

Then, on to immunity. The court rejects Trump's "separation of powers" argument, saying this:

That's strong language.

Seeing the real-time boomerfication of people my age is truly bizarre

The people I knew who used to sneak out of their parents house to smoke weed and play Halo are now worried that the Vision Pro is going to turn kids into zombies like floating calculator app in the living room is somehow a cognitohazard

There need to be a name for this psychological phenomenon where once you hit 30 you start interpreting everything unfamiliar as a threat to society

btrinen,
@btrinen@social.seattle.wa.us avatar

@jenbanim I don’t see why it’s a threat to society, but I also don’t see what problems it solves. Like if someone wants to spend their time with it strapped to their face I guess that’s great for their face, but to me it seems like just another random excuse to sell chips with no particular use case I need. At least it’s super expensive so it will help some people burn through money they don’t know what else to do with.
Actual threats to society? Still mostly nuclear bombs.

Amelia Earhart's twin-tailed monoplane, which vanished during her flight around the world in 1937, may have been found. Deep Sea Vision, a company owned by former pilot Tony Romeo, started searching for the plane last year using a $9 million underwater drone, and on reviewing sonar data, saw the fuzzy outline of what resembles a plane. Next, they will take a camera underwater to examine the object. Romeo says his goal would be to raise the plane and solve the mystery of what happened, however international standards for underwater archaeology suggest the aircraft remain where it is and be examined in situ. Here's the full story from the AP. What do you think should happen if this really is Earhart's plane?

@CultureDesk @histodons I think they should explore the plane in person using an expensive experimental submarine with a catastrophic failure mode which was designed for very wealthy people who enjoy looking at old wrecks.
