Nigel Farage getting hit by a #milkshake is not funny. My dad was killed by a milkshake

It didn't hit him or anything, he just had diabetes

Selfhosted instance.

I am thinking of breaking and to a separate server instead of increasing my current VPS resources.

I'll have two servers. My main, which will run Mastodon, and another that will have Postgres and ElasticSearch on it.

Will I benefit by doing this or should I just move ElasticSearch to its own server? What is the minimum CPU/ram I can get for the second server & what should I get?

Or, other thoughts welcomed.

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@paul My instance (~70mau) runs comfortably with 4GB RAM and 2vCPUs. I've allocated 8GB swap space for safety, but don't see more than 2-3GB usage in general. Aside from occasional short spikes, I don't have problems with CPU usage. The biggest RAM hog by far is Elasticsearch

I'm not sure this will apply to your situation, but if I need to scale my instance, the first thing I'd do is spin off Elasticsearch by itself. Partly because resources, but also it's less-critical if it fails

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@paul Yeah, it's a pain, and that totally lines up with my experience

For one of the big products at my job, literally over half of the hosting cost comes from ElasticSearch's RAM requirements alone. Every other microservice put together doesn't even come close to the RAM usage of just ElasticSearch. It's pretty insane for something that isn't, like, the core service being provided to customers

The 1% rule states that the vast majority of social media users don't post comments and instead lurk or just vote

More broadly, it's commonly understood when you make an internet service that a small proportion of your users will use a massively disproportionate amount of your resources

Are there any services you use where you're the 1%?

jenbanim,

For me it's Google Earth and Google Maps. I've spent countless hours just exploring satellite data and I have to imagine I've cost Google a fair amount of money by doing so

@GossiTheDog I notice that Twitter tries to make their low engagement look better by emphasizing the "X number of views" metric, which in all likelihood is either inflated by bots or straight up fabricated

Lab grown meat is still vegan, no?

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Reshirams_Rad_Slam Yes but also kinda no. The end goal is to not require animals at any point in the process, but during the current R&D phase there are live donor animals for the cells, dead donor animals for the medium, and dead rats for the FDA approval. But of course, if lab-grown meat becomes readily available, many many animals will be saved

@petes_bread_eqn_xls there actually are times songs should be updated so their meanings don't change. "If I had a million dollars" should be remastered as "If I had 2.7 million dollars" due to literal inflation

My favorite example though is the line "that thought was just as bright as a 20-watt lightbulb" in "protect ya neck". Since the Advent of LEDs this line now means that it's actually an exceptionally bright idea
