I've been around online since the earlier usenet days when you had to have some chops to know what usenet is (was), and how to get on it. Mastodon right now feels a bit like the good days of usenet, there's some of the same vibe.

Interests: bike maintenance, ebikes, orchids, cymbidiums, weird succulents, gardening in general, security engineering, current events, congressional shenanigans, courthouse shenanigans, US and european politics.

Indicted Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey is expected to file for reelection as an independent, two sources familiar with the matter said Monday.

We don’t know yet how Trump’s conviction will impact the November election

We can be pretty sure of 2 things, though

  1. Tomorrow, the RNC will report Trump’s biggest fundraising day ever, the media will run with that story, and no one will follow up if/when official election filings contradict it

  2. A GOP-sponsored poll will show that Trump's conviction will not lose him any votes, and the media will run with that too

Bullshit. The supreme court is fighting a rearguard action, getting more and more exposed as the corrupt frauds they are. But with the demographic movements, the change is inevitable, it's just a matter of when. And like most changes of power, when it comes it will be like a dam breaking.

artemesia,

@GottaLaff

I think the interest is in comparing the CFPB's funding mechanism with the special counsel's. CFPB is funded directly by the federal reserve rather than appropriations; this mostly prevents congress from using it as a political football. Similarly, the special counsel is funded independently of appropriations. Once again cannon is exceeding her brief chasing down issues that do not exist and is auditioning for appointment to higher court, smiling at each month ticking by.

Justice says he believes that the wants him to repeat a significant portion of the .

He will read pages 6-35.

Each page yesterday took him just a little more than a minute, so this will take >30 mins.

artemesia,

I guess I don't see any real difference between an error communicated orally vs. one written down. Both can result in an overturned verdict and mistrial. But the common sense professional in me knows damned well that you get piss-poor results when you try to communicate 60 pages of complex material orally, without giving the audience a printed version to reinforce and reference.

artemesia,
@artemesia@techhub.social avatar

Hey, at least he stopped badmouthing the jury and court personnel. His attorneys must have explained his release on on recognizance is very revocable on the judge's whim, and IIRC brevocation is not appealable.

I read the jury instructions.

With the disclaimer that this is absolutely not a prediction of what the jury will do, not much in the jury instructions change what I had to say here:

https://terikanefield.com/wheres-the-beef-trumps-manhattan-criminal-case-and-some-mind-bending-legal-puzzles/

I wrote about predicate crimes for predicate crimes.

The predicate crime for falsification of business records is
NEW YORK ELECTION LAW § 17-152 PREDICATE.

The jury gets three possible predicate crimes for 17-152.

"Does it matter, though?"

Yes, it very much does matter, because the bookkeeping fraud is a misdemeanor, unless the fraud was committed with the purpose of furthering a different crime, in which case it's a felony. Did the prosecution convince the jury that a crime was furthered, even though no crime was charged beyond the 34 counts of bookkeeping fraud.

so, house heating saga continues

as far as i can tell from the measurements i took, it works like this: running the heating system for 5 minutes raises the temperature at the desk where I sit by almost exactly 0.2 degrees centigrade

so... I could write a script that looks at the current temperature and runs heating for 5*(20-t)/0.2? and then put it into cron

artemesia,
@artemesia@techhub.social avatar

@whitequark

I solved my desk area heating problem by putting a heating pad between keyboard/laptop and desk and running it on a low setting. Problem wasn't ambient temp, but that the hardware was heatsinking my hands, which constantly felt chilled. Way more cost effective and responsive than heating an entire room.

I want to lean into a suggestion @mattl gave and consider doing shirts to promote the URL tag. (Especially as I see someone else attempting to do the same.)

But I want to make them inexpensive and minimally profitable—I’d rather they be something people can afford to promote a message than a major revenue source, if that makes sense. Any suggestions on what my best option for that might be?

@ernie can udm14.com be configured to anonymize the searchers and disable tracking of click-thrus? Because I ditched google search years for privacy reasons, not due to the subsequent enshittification.

artemesia,

@ernie

Sorry, I was unclear. I'm not worried about what you might see, my concern is that google knows so much else about me from other google products I use, that I would prefer not to give them my search stream. So I'm wondering if your udm14.com, which I understand acts as a kind of search relay, could be used to somewhat anonymize its users from google. Obviously browser fingerprinting and cookie lookups will continue to work on any clickthrus. Maybe it's hopeless.

(In the department of no good deed going unpunished, you give us udm14 to deshittify google's search results, and I come along and whine that I also want it to anonymize me)

Nice job. I read some of it during the day, made a point of reading the rest this evening.

May I suggest a convenience feature for the readers? Put a #laffyfirst hashtag in the first post of each major thread. Then readers can just pull up that hashtag to get entry points in chrolonological order. Without that, like today, I was searching for the morning thread on three different devices, and each time had to scroll scroll scroll past the afternoon thread. And on touch devices the web interface is very finicky, easy to totally lose one's place and have to start over.

If there's already a way to get the list of today's threads without manual scrolling, someone please let me know how. Vanilla web UI.
