Just taking a break from Project Sekai to play some more Project Mirai DX for a while and say if SEGA and Crypton wanted to make one for the Switch, I'd pre-order it...

Just think: Project Mirai DX 2 with Switch motion controls.

Recs for fluffy nonfiction? Do not want to think too hard or be made sad. Memoirs etc, very welcome.

aris_tgd,

@ansate when Hamilton was the big thing I picked up Paul Collins' Duel with the Devil, an investigation into the trial that Hamilton and Burr were co-Defense counsel on. While the subject is a murder trial, the 200 years of distance makes it less immediate and there are a lot of great anecdotes and stories.

For one it taught me that Aaron Burr started Chase Bank as the Manhattan Water Company to get around Hamilton's Federalist friends not chartering any Anti-Federalist banks.

Looking for answers somewhere in the Dreamhost or better range, where "better" does not include "next to the towels in the hall closet" or similar.

Back in the day, I ran a website called God Hates Figs that mocked religious homophobia. In my latest newsletter, I talk about that experience -- plus why I loved #TheMarvels!

Me: I want my family and friends and their families back home after they've been brutally kidnapped after they've watched their loved ones burnt alive and murdered in the most brutal ways possible including babies, children, Holocaust survivors elderly and women they've raped and possibly are currently raping while I'm writing this.
World: You mean you want all Palestinian kids to die you genocidal horrible person?!

Obviously no. Nor do my entire IDF family and friends, or anyone we know.

aris_tgd,

@skaly So do I. I hope they are still safe, and can come home.

I also think the IDF is doing the wrong thing, and that what they're doing isn't making that any more likely, but I will readily admit that I don't know what the right thing to do is.

I wish there was a way out that would lead to less death and suffering instead of more. I don't think that after terrorists made the choice to kill and kidnap civilians there was a non-violent answer. But it shouldn't have been this.

I'm going to plug Indiginerds again because you can now add on a donor copy to your pledge!

https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/iron-circus-comics/indiginerds

For $20US you can donate a copy to a Native community!

There are 3 days left to back this collection of stories, and you can choose to add on extra books from ICC, extra copies for library and community donations, and some really awesome pins and patches. Also, the more pledges come through, the higher page rate the contributors get!

When thinking about content warning/tagging policies, I think that it's most important to be consistent.

I was around for the big arguments about required trigger warnings on the Archive of Our Own, which eventually shook out to the current list, and the experience of deciding how to make those compromises was interesting.

aris_tgd,

The current AO3 warnings list requires you to put a warning on your work if it contains: graphic violence, major character death, rape or other nonconsensual sex, and descriptions/depictions of underage sex.

There's also an option for "Choose not to warn."

This obviously fails to cover the whole range of possible triggers, and even a lot of common ones. What does that mean for users?

aris_tgd,

The most important thing is that you know, if you are triggered by one of the things on the list, that there is an official warning that will let you know if it's there. (Also the "underage" tag lets you know if some material might be illegal in your jurisdiction. Looking at you, Australia.)

But if you aren't covered by the list, it also means that you know that people aren't necessarily looking out for your trigger.

aris_tgd,

Knowing whether or not you have to do extra legwork is actually helpful. Yes it means that you need to check every story that you want to read for, say, animal harm ahead of time, to name another common trigger which was up for consideration.

But it doesn't lead to the confusion of an unbounded list, where some people consider death to be a necessary warning and some consider it a silly thing. The lack of a "character death" label means something.

This article is over a decade old, but it still holds up, and none of the problems it talks about, not a single one of them, has improved at all since it was written.

Dolly Parton asked about trans rights: "I just want everybody to be treated good...

I just see how broken-hearted they get over certain things and I know how real they are. I know how important this is to them. That’s who they are. They cannot help that any more than I can help being Dolly Parton."

It can be frustrating to read the way that people who are unaware of all of the things that “police presence” will do to a neighborhood write about police abolition— even when they are making an effort to understand they still regard police as something that, if removed, would need to be replaced. After all? who will stop the criminals? Who will keep the neighborhood from descending into chaos?

What they fail to understand is that the police are the chaos. 1/

Be ungovernable, like birds who make nests OUT OF ANTI-BIRD SPIKES. A new study describes resourceful Dutch & Belgian corvids besting evil architecture by stealing metal anti-bird strips and using them like thorny twigs, to construct their homes.

Like thorns, the spikes may protect their nests from predators.

Lead author Auke-Florian Hiemstra wrote an epic 🧵 about his research that's worth a read: https://twitter.com/AukeFlorian/status/1678703433900064773
