The UK politician Nigel Farage is stirring up hate speech__whilst looking rather jolly & proud about it

“What do I have to offer you? Well I can promise you that I do know one thing. That a woman can’t have a penis! You won’t get any woke PC nonsense from me!” https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jun/04/red-meat-and-milk-clacton-voters-on-nigel-farage-and-his-button-pushing-rhetoric

So the "one thing" Farage knows is how to stir up the "mob"

What an X investment banker.

Can fear motivate change? Sure it can.

Can love motivate change? No doubt it can.

Can music motivate change? Only if people listen.

Can death motivate change? Not for the departed. But, for the living, fear of death can either motivate change or cause people to "freeze" in horror.

What are you most scared off?

"Within less than a minute, I'm approached by a store worker who comes up to me and says, 'You're a thief, you need to leave the store'."

Sara - who wants to remain anonymous - was wrongly accused after being flagged by a facial-recognition system called Facewatch.

She says after her bag was searched she was led out of the shop, and told she was banned from all stores using the technology.

Facewatch later wrote to Sara and acknowledged it had made an error.

And if the police wrongfully arrested & imprisoned (e.g., temp. in a cell) an innocent person because they relied on AI facial recognition? 🤔

The police aren't a protest group. Just saying. Surely a police force doesn't consist of people that never question authority? That would be blind allegiance.

Police officers have to operate within a framework of social:

    1. Transparency

    2. Accountability.

In that, if a police officer is observed using some form of force, that includes a non violent arrest, then citizens will know why the use of force, why an arrest, was necessary.

    If conditions 1 & 2 are met!

    How Feelings Can Deliver Misinformation

To convert feeling-based misinformation into reliable information, one must think consciously about whether the information was derived from reliable processes.

Brain (nervous system) dysfunction can be demarcated, for the sake of clarity, between genetically or cognitively caused

E.g., the behaviour that is diagnosed as , can be a or cognitively caused phenomena. Although, medically, only the former should be diagnosed as schizophrenia

As for the latter, mistaken beliefs such as hearing "god" in the mind (dualism) can cause behaviours that mirror schizophrenia, but, can be mitigated with education

is the effect of too many homed people not being motivated to house the homeless.

In other words, it's a policy problem. One, in part, solution, ban second homes! (I.e., to mitigate the housing shortage). But, many rich folk won't like that practical solution.

Rishi Sunak to strip GPs of right to sign people off sick

    http://archive.today/2024.04.19-062257/https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/rishi-sunak-gps-sign-people-off-sick-ill-rr353jstv

GPs face being stripped of the right to issue sick notes, as the prime minister says doctors are too readily writing people off as unfit for work. Specialist teams linked to the benefits system will instead assess the sick and decide how best to keep them in work.

Be afraid, very afraid. Those will be the same private companies who have already stripped benefits with no due concern.

l would not say it's intentional cruelty (on average), it's apathy. Apathy causes cruelty

Obviously, a person seeing their own Doctor provides a more personal & professional context for an accurate medical assessment.

So, why are the Tories trying to "fix" something that's not broken?

If they believe that too many people are wanting to try & live on benefit money, rather than work, they should look at the quality of work (e.g., working hours & pay).

There are people saying that it's not up to an individual to reduce their use because it's a society problem. But, that's misleading

For a real world example. In cities such as copenhagen, 62% of inhabitants trips to work or school are by bicycle.

For this to happen, for the bike lanes, etc, to be constructed. For the experience of bicycling in a city to be safe & convenient, the majority of inhabitants have to want it

It doesn't take a government to enforce bicycling!

I live in "ground zero" of an ecological crisis in the making. A typical conversation with a typical local person__involves them expressing the complete nonsense they, apparently, really believe in. Worse than a simple misunderstanding. E.g., their implicit scientific ignorance, causes them to be offended & explicitly arrogant. They don't like the "experts" who "think" they know better than them.

The scale of an individuals effect, depends on how many other people do "it".

As one example, if l was say "No thanks! I've brought my own non-plastic bag" to the retailer asking if l want a (plastic) bag, that action didn't stop that plastic bag from being manufactured.

But, if 90% of people stopped using the retailers plastic bags, that retailer would order less plastic bags.

Scale this up on a population level (& do the math).

The general problem is people wanting to believe, what they want to believe, & disregarding the rest. Also known as a confirmation bias.

In fact, if people were scientifically trained, that would mitigate their biased, unreasonable beliefs.

As for your reply, the problem there was that you reacted to the paraphrased quote, rather than taking the time to listen to the podcast, the context, which should of meant you understood what Sam meant by "destroyed" (during WWII)

"The general problem is people wanting to believe, what they want to believe, & disregarding the rest. Also known as a confirmation bias."

Add to that the propaganda (disinformation. AKA lies) spread by those that want you to believe, what they want you to believe. And then spread by mistake (misinformation), by those that, typically, want to believe in the, implicit to them, false information.

#Democracy is far more than voting every so often. As one person, you can't change society, or sustain a policy, if the majority of people in the society don't agree with you ?__& or, for example, aren't aware that a change is needed.

Democracy is a numbers system. Change enough minds that #ClimateChange is a serious threat, & the government will listen (if they want to stay in power)

If an identical rise occurs because days are lengthening and mating season is approaching, you decide to fly a thousand miles to your breeding grounds. A "Free" Market (FME) is, comparably, an ignorant idea. An ideology that is postulated by those that don't know & or don't care about mitigating or social inequity. Fundamentally, the FME is the idea that owners, share holders, investors, should be "free" to choose how to manage their business, their finances. Free to invest in eco degrading activities & (as they do). First & foremost, free to pursue profits, free to be motivated by greed, not need
