If you've never used vim, type 'vimtutor' into the command line and you will be brought to an interactive instruction manual for vim.

Or they could be repurposed with or Chrome OS Flex, or , and we can stop being so freaking dramatic.

If you just browse, watch Netflix, shop, net banking, etc, Linux distributions like Mint or Ubuntu could save you money. It is an environment-friendly option.

@nixCraft Oh, absolutely. I've got two low-powered Apple laptops that are abandonware. They work great on Lubuntu. Imagine what you can do with hardware that isn't so locked down.

To anyone reading this who is anxious about making their own DVD/USB, go to your library, they may have a Linux DVD on hand. Borrow a DVD drive and run it. I started that way. I'm happily burning my own stuff, now.

I think I'll just say that bringing your page's content back down to earth can be a good thing. For example:

Also, what does the friend want the website to do for them the most? Is it a blog? A store? An instruction manual? Answering this question should narrow down what, if any, extra services they desire.

"No, you won't blow up your computer." HTML alone has great payoff for writing in a text file and seeing the result transformed in browser.

@eniko I agree. I just went through Inktober, and while there are only a few of the drawings that I'm happy with, it normalized sitting down with a pen and paper. The skill comes with practice. Normalizing practice is important. 🙂

If you follow this feed for a while you may gradually come to realize that a substantial percentage of the problems in my life come from "I want to use the devices I want to use, even if some corporation wants me to shrug and pay a lot of money for a different device I'll like less". I acknowledge this but I do not intend to change my behavior

@mcc Same. Two days ago I plugged in a subscription-free printer into an abandonware'd computer whose old OS I replaced with Linux. It printed. It was a good day.
