@qlp Taken from us too soon. was my favorite character behind . I wanted both of them to have waaaay more screentime and story development.

Amazing how the original characters that aren't just rehashes are the most interesting. Hope can keep looking ahead post instead of yet another prequel/reboot.

The phrase “AI” has been poisoned so hard that nobody building serious products should use it. I would love to see more free software projects leverage computer vision or natural language processing for example, but I would never describe those as “AI” because it’s a brand destroying phrase at this point

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@danirabbit No joke. At this point, most #marketing copy using the terms "AI" or "artificial intelligence" really just means "uses computer."

For real, my security camera is not using #AI to find humans in the frame. That's basic #ImageProcessing that's been around for years. My #DSLR could accurately fimd and focus on faces a decade ago. That certainly was not #ArtificialIntelligence!

DanielMReck, to chemistry

#ScienceDirect and #Elsevier clearly didn't review this #chemistry paper about #batteries. The intro starts with "Certainly, here is a possible introduction for your topic:".

This lack of oversight erodes #trust in #science. The paper needs to be retracted and the authors sanctioned immediately.

#GenerativeAI may have its uses in #academic #writing, but this is uncited #plagiarism and #dishonest claim of original work. The #AI and #LLM don't have an #author credit.

"Republicans are calling for a standalone international aid package because they now oppose the addition of stricter #border #policy they demanded."

If you put this in a movie, no one would believe it.

To be clear, the #GOP does not want better #BorderPolicy, because once they have it, they will have one fewer thing to gin up #CultureWars with #misinformation #politics about #immigration.

For #Republicans, fomenting chaos in #government is the feature, not a bug.

@kissane What is Substack's business model? Follow the money and we will may find a rationale for their decisions.

Eyeballs glued to newsletters generate ad revenue, subscription fees, and data harvesting for resale. More eyeballs make more money, and nothing attracts eyeballs more than rage, disaster, fear, gotchas, and horniness — especially when it validates one's view of themselves, their community, and their world.

Grievance content makes money, and Nazis have lots of grievances. Oof.

@alcinnz @scottjenson Yes, I work in IT at a where the doors can be momentarily openned by turning the key one direction and fully unlocked the other direction. Of course, the turn direction for each function is inconsistent on every door.

I put this label on our office suite two years ago and it's always nice to hear a new colleague see it and say, "Oh this is great, the doors in this place are so confusing."

Fuck the headphone jack. Like the floppy drive before it, nothing has ever been more deserving of death. ☠️ It's called "the future", maybe look into it?

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@codinghorror Well, I use wired all the time and plug into sound equipment a few times a week. It's really nice to be able to do that and charge the phone at the same time, all without any extra adapters or stubbornly combative connections.

Maybe I'd be okay losing the if there were multiple USB-C ports on the phone and I could buy comfortable headphones for the same price as the nice analog ones I already have.

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@delric @codinghorror Okay, how do I use those headphones on the other analog equipment with the adapter attached as you recommend?

As a videographer I use my analog headphones to monitor sound levels. Can you install USB-C ports in SLR cameras? What about Zoom audio recorders?

What happens to the USB-C adapter then? It's useful on exactly one device: the phone. Obviously we can't leave the dongle dangling on the phone, because then we couldn't charge it, and it would just be...well, dumb.

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@codinghorror I think the convenience of not having to buy extra crap (which is frequently overpriced, easily lost or stolen, and is a completely unnecessary additional failure point) is equally understated.

Hey, I'm not saying that you can't use a USB-C adapter. In fact I endorse it, because it seems to make you happy and it appears to work for you.

It just doesn't work for everybody. And that's fine. That's why there's competition in the market. You buy your phone and I'll buy mine.

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@delric @codinghorror Fortunately for the rest of the world, they don't need to adhere to my edge case. Nor do I expect them to.

And I won't have to adhere to your preference for using USB-C ports which are far from universal as long as there are some phone makers putting headphone jacks in. It's a win-win.

(For me, I don't know what to do with the dongle when it's not connected to the headphones. It's WILL get lost. I'll need it later and it won't be there. My problem, not yours.)

DanielMReck,
@DanielMReck@mas.to avatar

@delric @codinghorror Just out of curiosity, what harm comes to anyone if a phone has both a headphone jack and a USB-C port and the owner just doesn't use the headphone jack?

The headphone jack serves a non-trivial number of phone owners. The rest of them can easily ignore it, like the micro HDMI port I ignored on a phone I once owned.

It's not like an unused jack hurts you, right? Do your headphone jacks work differently than mine?
