Feynman once said the most important thing to know is "everything is made of atoms".
Right now maybe the most important thing to know is "many incredibly wealthy people, particularly in Silicon Valley, are in an insane science fiction cult".
@misc@trochee
If critics could get past the "o the board's incompetence, how droll!" stuff, they might find a useful illustration of how & why #TESCREAL ideologies & #LessWrongism more generally fail. The Board appears to have been made up of sincere people with crazy beliefs that happen to be really amenable to exploitation for manipulation of sincere people. There's a lot to unpack in this, but I've got work to do, a novel to finish, grandkids to play with....
"It'd be amusing if these guys didn't have a combined net worth somewhere in the region of half a trillion euros and the desire to change the human universe, along with a load of unexamined prejudices and a bunch of half-baked politics they absorbed from the predominantly American SF stories they read in their teens."
Love how this rag calls him a scientist, then an expert, but then in the first paragraph labels him for what he's speaking as: the CEO of a company working on AI called.. SingularityAI.
🤦♂️
Like I knew Popular Mechanics was bad and I knew this article would be trash before clicking the link, but god damn, that's an audacious claim to stick in a headline and call it journalism.
FYI: we will not see a singularity event in our lifetime. I promise.
You two are 100% correct. #Elmo and the other tech mogul #SciFi nerds from their high-school and college days are actually trying to realize part of these novels within their framework of beliefs, e.g. #Longtermism.
(If you listen to the two #TESCREAL interviews/podcasts* in my TL, it becomes clear.)
What I love about Silicon Valley venture capitalists is that that they love being loud and wrong. If I had spent the last few years shilling crypto as the next big thing in tech only for a bunch of my portfolio companies to turn out to be Ponzi schemes & grifts, I’d never write publicly again.
@carnage4life If Marc Andreessen didn’t have a cruise ship filled with money, no one would listen to his rants.
He’s just spouting the same old “leave us be and watch the world progress” nonsense that robber barons have been dishing out for more than a century, but this time with a nice mix of #TESCREAL bullshit.
ELEVATOR PITCH: A techbro with an AI startup buys rights to dead horror stars, plans a blockbuster movie starring Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, and Peter Cushing, scripted & directed by an AI simulation of Ed Wood. (Grimes will star as leading lady, obvs.)
The AI horror star simulations are offended and instead of joining SAG-AFTRA they take over the 3D printed android bodies of their characters in the movie and go on a murderous rampage at the Techbro's fundraiser gala.
@lauren
struggles with how to file the epiphany that in a post-singularity-effective-altruism [#TESCREAL deep-future, 'server racks' are essentially #tzompantli, but the skulls are still sentient.] @cstross
I know, e.g. "Mondbasis Alpha 1" (Lunar Base Alpha 1,) the TV series.
The resolve and the business oportunities lacked. If you look at #TESCREAL, you will see that all tech billionaire adherents to these cults are dead serious in completing the Mars mission.
And #LLMs and #AI are just "the next big thing" globally in all lines of business. There's not only a figurative "arms race" between AI companies, but also b/w the US and China.
What is different are the almost unlimited amounts..
Yep the #TESCREAL bundle is running the show. H/t Emile P. Torres.
"Leigh will borrow the estimate of Oxford philosopher Toby Ord in a speech on Friday exploring the intersection between catastrophic risk and extreme politics – a topic the former economics professor and assistant minister for competition has examined in a new book, What’s the Worst That Could Happen?"
Regarding last boost: it's distressing to me just how many people in so-called "AI", and tech generally, are #TESCREAL, misogynist, racist, and generally bigots. Computer science is really showing its ass right now and I hope we collectively have a come to Jesus moment and grow beyond this because it's bad.
Technology, computer science, computer engineering, and AI should benefit everyone equally, and we should recognize and acknowledge that everyone, no matter their background, ethnicity, or what have you, can contribute just as well if they're so inclined.
I hope we all can commit to looking ourselves in the mirror each day and asking whether we're lifting people up or beating people down with our work, because there's way too much of the latter happening.
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but the happiness—or even the existence—of a trillion trillion trillion simulated beings some time in the future is not worth the life of even a single real, flesh-and-blood person who is alive today.
Hell, square the number of future beings a trillion times, for that matter. There’s no number where that math pencils out.
The European commission tweeted saying: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority."
Same exact sentence from the stupid 22 word letter from the #TESCREAL orgs, this one being the Center for AI Safety. The same one whose founder, who just graduated I believe, wrote a "paper" with the title "Natural Selection Favors Artificial Intelligence."
via Prof. Timothy Snyder, #Yale University in TheGuardian@mstdn.social :
"...#Musk’s actions have increased the chances of nuclear war.
There is always some risk, which Russia increased by initiating a major conflict. Ukraine then decreased the probability by ignoring Russian nuclear blackmail. If Ukraine had surrendered, then the lesson for the rest of the world would have been clear: you must have nuclear weapons, either to blackmail...
...grip on global communications and his wealth that dwarfs that of many countries.
No, I am talking about his mental health and about his crazy beliefs based in #Longtermism, part of #TESCREAL.
In order to achieve "humanity's destiny" between the stars, some followers of these cults would do almost anything to achieve that goal.
An #AI singularity, that #Musk and his followers fear would be prevent such a destiny, would even warrant a #NuclearWar, even it it meant...
“Musk gave Isaacson a different explanation for buying [Twitter]: ‘Unless the woke-mind virus, which is fundamentally antiscience, antimerit, and antihuman in general, is stopped, civilization will never become multiplanetary.”
Not lying, this #TESCREAL shit makes my hair stand on end.
