The former head of alignment at OpenAI shares that he left the company because he disagrees with its current focus on products at the expense of focusing on societal impact, safety, preparedness, security & related topics.

Sounds like a typical for-profit company not non-profit.

Disney’s CEO concedes they spent too much money in the streaming wars trying to compete with Netflix and ended up with $4B in losses trying to tell too many stories at the expense of quality.

This goes to show how much respect Netflix deserves for their content portfolio.

Researchers from the universities of Chicago & Michigan analyzed resumes of employees of Apple, Microsoft & Space X and determined that their RTO policies led to a decrease in senior staff by 5%. This analysis was prior to layoffs at these companies.

This is evidence that RTO leads to attrition of senior employees. It seems obvious but it's great to have a research study backing the intuition.

Netflix now has 270M subscribers of which 40M are in their ad tier.

They are also abandoning Microsoft as their ad platform and bringing it in-house. It makes sense to not want to rely on an external party for a critical chunk of their revenue.

I saw a post claiming that weekly 1-on-1s are bad because they descend into nitpicking sessions.

These are typically signs of a bad manager. A weekly 1-on-1 is a good opportunity for both the manager and report to share context on what’s going on and the report to ask for help.

The contradiction in the profile bio of every OpenAI researcher is that you can't truly believe in AGI and that it will be net positive for humanity.

At best you're lying to yourself to justify your work and at worst you are ignoring centuries of human history.

Casey Newton describes the web as now being in a stage of managed decline as Google embraces AI search results.

Websites will lose traffic as Google replaces links with answers and will need to advertise more to make up for the lost traffic.

More websites will block Google’s crawlers as the relationship is now increasingly one sided and Google will have to pay more websites like they do Reddit to access their content.

The best years of the web are now behind us.

As surmised, there was no grand strategy in laying off the entire supercharger team. It was a rage firing because an exec defied a layoff order and now Tesla has to beg these people to return now their CEO’s calmed down.

When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.

The real problem OpenAI has created for Google is that it has damaged the virtuous cycle of websites making free content for Google to index so Google sends them traffic in return.

Now Google’s AI results will provide answers instead of sending sites traffic and the web withers

When negotiating with others, there are two broad buckets they fall into. Those who see negotiation as one party trying to take advantage of the other and those who see it as trying to create a win-win situation for those involved.

It’s more pleasant to be & work with the latter

When I worked on the Metaverse, I talked with developers about whether generative AI would make creating games cheaper and they disagreed.

They also quoted the example of CGI in Hollywood movies. It simply raised the bar on expectations versus enabling cheaper special effects.

Two things are true.

  1. Skill based immigration is great for a country’s economy.
  2. People have the right to decide racial/ethnic hegemony is more important than having a better economy.

This is the choice the UK made with brexit and the US is making now with skilled immigrants

It must be really awkward hosting Q&A’s with the staff celebrating record profits to the tune of billions of dollars only for employees to ask why you’re doing layoffs every quarter then?

This is why CEOs can’t wait to replace their pesky employees with AI.

Trump coming out for crypto while Biden's SEC tries to regulate it out of existence will be the tipping point in Silicon Valley VCs shedding the pretense of being liberal and going all in on MAGA.

Tesla shareholders should rejoice. The Biden administration is planning on increasing tariffs on Chinese EVs from 25% to 100% which is as good as banning them.

Similar tariff hikes are planned for solar panels.

Fining AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile less than $4M each on average for falsely advertising their data plans as unlimited seems like a slap on the wrist.

I’m confident they made way more than that from the consumers they tricked into purchasing those plans.

Maybe they’d have been fined more than that if it was a lawsuit about misleading shareholders instead. 🤷🏾‍♂️

Scammers tried to trick execs at WPP to send them money by pretending to be the CEO on a Microsoft Teams call using voice cloning and deepfakes from public YouTube videos.

We now have to ask coworkers to show us their hands on video calls to prove they aren’t AI. 😫

Apple execs tried ChatGPT last year and came to the conclusion Siri is antiquated.

A functional digital assistant that can actually understand conversations and complete tasks would be a good reason for users to buy Android devices instead of iPhones. So they’ve panicked.

They also plan to tout on-device AI as more private than cloud-based AI. The question is if it will be as useful? 🤔

I continue to be fascinated by the fact that when Jack Dorsey looks back at his time at Twitter, his only regret is that it was technically possible for him to ban the Nazis so people nagged him to do so.

So now his ideal social network is one where the moderators can’t ban Nazis.
