The family analogy breaks down fairly quickly in today’s tech world. You aren’t disowning family members to keep your stock price high.

It’s still shocking that this just happens every quarter now.

Over $20 billion in profit every quarter and a few hundred people cut from various divisions each quarter as well.

Massive generation gap. In the 2000s, parents canceled Eminem while the kids loved him. In the 2020s, kids are canceling Eminem while the parents love him.

Ads are the most obvious form of enshitification of the Amazon experience and returns is a close second. Long gone are the days of simple, no questions asked returns.

Given 1 out of 7 retail goods purchased in the US are returned, it’s proven unsustainable to make it easy to do.

Making it harder to return things is simply good business for a retailer.

On a related note, I’ve had Amazon itself notify me items were not delivered but then make it hard to then file for a refund or a re-delivery.

After Pixar’s layoffs, the other shoe has dropped and Disney is revamping they make movies. They will move away from unique personal stories from their directors lives like Luca and Turning Red.

Instead they will focus on sequels like this summer’s Inside Out 2.

Finding Nemo and The Incredibles are the candidates most likely to be future sequels. They are also going to monitor the performance of their Inside Out spinoff on Disney+ to decide if they’ll keep making shows.

GPUs are a scarce resource and if you run multiple companies that are all using AI then you’ll have to play favorites.

Matt Levine had a newsletter on the topic of Musk’s investors now having to guess which company he’ll focus on. Looks like Tesla lost this round.

This is another tone deaf AI pitch from a tech CEO. A valuable feature for workers would be intelligent summaries of meetings you didn’t attend.

A deepfake me that can attend my Zoom calls and make decisions is at best hype and at worst insulting to other meeting attendees.

I’ll make him a deal. I’ll use this tech when Zoom’s CEO uses this tech to attend Zoom calls for earnings reports and his leadership meetings so he can spend more time with his family.

I saw #furiosa this afternoon and it reminded me a lot of Rogue One. A prequel that is itself a great movie which while not being as great as the original comes quite close in various ways.

I’m honestly shocked this isn’t doing well at the box office.

A dynamic in tech right now is that there’s a handful of companies making the majority of the profits and revenue in the sector.

Typically these companies spread their wealth through hiring and acquisition which are both down for different reasons. How will this impact the tech industry?

A survey by the Reuters Institute and Oxford of 12,000 people across 6 countries shows a huge gap between adoption and hype around generative AI tools.

Just 1% using tools like ChatGPT on a daily basis in Japan, rising to 2% in France and the UK, and 7% in the USA.

Salesforce stock price plunge over tiny misses in revenue and earnings reads like a narrative failure versus a financial one.

The company is forecasting under 10% growth for the first time ever and said deals are taking longer as companies scrutinize budgets.

A -16% stock price drop seems excessive. There’s also a question of whether this isn’t a canary in the coal mine for other SAAS players over the course of the year. Maybe AI spending is sucking all of the oxygen out of the room?

The fascinating thing about this story of how Sam Altman signed a deal with Apple to add ChatGPT to iOS despite Satya Nadella’s concerns is that it’s now an open secret that Apple is betting on OpenAI.

As in Apple had no leverage to maintain the secrecy.

Another example of how Apple is getting left behind in the AI wars is that both Windows PCs and Chromebooks are going to have AI assistants, generative AI image tools and writing tools.

Apple will probably just announce the thinnest MacBook ever. Again.

A big problem with news headlines about demographic trends is that they hide the nuance to catastrophize the news.

The fertility crisis in the US is really a story of a huge drop in teen pregnancies. So unless we want to go back to a bunch more teen moms, it isn’t actually a “problem”.

OpenAI tricked itself and its board into thinking it was a research lab instead of a tech startup.

When the moment of truth came, the investors and employees conceded they’re just another tech startup then threw out the old board. The end.

Capitalism always finds a way.

When I was still active on Twitter, Elon Musk fan boys would say “Stop criticizing Elon’s decisions, do you think you know how to run a business better than the richest man in the world?”

It turns out the answer to that question is YES. We all do.

Hybrids are sounding like the best of both worlds these days. BYD delivering a car for under $14,000 that can go 1,250 miles without recharging or refueling is wild.

Unfortunately US car owners will have to pay double, thanks to tariffs if they want this level of fuel economy.
