Mastodon people, I'm looking for academics, researchers and librarians who are involved in their professional organizations to push for sustainability and decarbonization in their discipline/field.
Can you help me?
I am looking to exchange ideas, tips, and strategies.
I'm particularly interested in hearing more from people involved with the American Association of Geographers. #envhist #environment #sustainability #climatejustice #environmentaljustice
Bit of a long shot, but could my good mastodon follower folk give me some boosts?
I'm starting work on a documentary podcast series about the future of space; renewable/sustainable technologies, commercialism in the sector and the public's perception of it all.
I'm hoping to connect with people who know space to complement my client's contacts, so any signal boosting would be appreciated!
My most awaited project of the year, the TROM II documentary, is now finally close to its release! 😃 So I just want to share a few thoughts as to why its so interesting for me:
👉 The entire #documentary, around 5 hours long and divided into 4 parts, is made by a single person (@tio), using only #FOSS software like @kdenlive for editing, and on a #linux distro (tromjaro.com) as the main OS. This in itself is a very impressive feat! And also a shout-out to the awesome #FreeSoftware / #OpenSource community for how much it has grown. I heard this documentary is the biggest project ever made on #kdenlive so far, and making such a big documentary by a single person is no joke - took years of hard work to complete.
👉 Following a #FediFirst approach, it will be released on #fediverse platforms like @peertube first! Free for all to watch without any ads or data collection. I don't know if this will be uploaded to proprietary platforms like #YouTube, tho I'm sure #Peertube will always have top priority 😉
👉 Unlike the first TROM documentary which was released a decade ago, this one features interviews with people like @bigworldsmallsasha, @aaron, @sober_pirate, @georgi and Tio himself. They talk about their personal lives, how they grew up in this world and such, their stories are supposed to give us a larger perspective on how our current society works. I can't tell you much more until I get to watch the documentary and see how all of this falls into place 🙂
👉 No stock footage has been used in the documentary! If making a 5 hour documentary doesn't sound hard enough for you then this will do it, lol 😄 So for example if it shows some scientists looking at data in one scene, then its actual scientists looking at actual data that they work on, not some stock footage of actors pointing at screens and faking stuff. Finding real world footage like this is a time consuming task as it'd require going thorugh a lot of documentaries, videos, etc looking for the right clip you need.
👉 If you've ever read any of the TROM e-books or seen their videos before then you'll know how it goes - looking at the world from a scientific perspective, encouraging people to be curious about the world we live in and the universe that surrounds us, and perhaps most important of all, to cut through all of the social constructs we've been accustomed to and see the world for what it really is, because only if we truly understand our world can we solve the many problems that are plaguing our planet right now. To get a little taste of what TROM is about you can try watching these short videos they've released in the past:
While I was #cycling home yesterday, someone standing at a mixed use crossing stopped to talk with me. They mentioned how ridiculous the endless stream of traffic was and that the cars forming the traffic jam, effectively represented just a single coach full of people.
We really need to do better if we are to progress. Replacing those ICE cars with EV is only a small part of the answer.
Nature: the perfect backdrop for pretending to be productive while staring out the window.🌍🌳Today is Earth Day, so let's appreciate this glorious planet before returning to mindlessly scrolling through cat pics.🐾🙃
This German company uses 3D printing to manufacture eggshell-thin compostable terracotta cups and bowls for food service packaging.
Their eco-friendly reusable products are apparently 10 times stronger than paper – and their business model is based on decentralized, on-demand manufacturing.
YES to eliminating long shipping distances and using readily available raw materials!
This might be the most important blog post I ever wrote. It's been a while since I wanted to publish some sort of personal manifesto on my site.
After I stopped promoting myself as if I were a brand, I needed to put my foot down and declare what I stand for, on the only place that's not going away: my personal website.
So, here it is. A personal manifesto, where I touch on these topics:
"Rising Sun, David Geffen’s 454ft, 82 room megaship spews an estimated 16,320 tons of #carbon dioxide equivalent gases into the atmosphere annually, 800x wht average American generates in a yr.
#Physics is where I started and someday want to return, but currently focused on our great task.
New to #Mastodon, hoping to find a place where people can connect more authentically than #LinkedIn, without the algorithm or the corporate hype machines. #EnergyMastodon
Oh my gosh I love this a lot: European Parliament voted unanimously last week to include a definition of #ecocide in the list of offences of the environmental crime directive.
It's not in law yet, but it's a major positive step to making it happen. Imagine what this means for oil spills, for species extinction, ... for climate change?
When it says "recycleable" it does not mean "likely to be recycled".
According to my own online research, the #recycling systems in #Europe and the #US are generally most likely to recycle code 1 and 2 plastics, and sometimes code 5.
So just pay attention to the recycling codes and speak after me: "👏 One and 👏 two and 👏 maybe 👏 five!"
I could probably think of more but I think that's a good start! I also have a blog that you can check out here: https://bookishnoelle.linefeed.app. I write about technology, the books I'm reading, and I'm planning on writing updates on my journey of learning how to code a blog in #html and #css. Follow me if any of what I just wrote sounds interesting to you! Thank you for reading. 😄
Yesterday I broke the #gearbox of my wife's #bike. I had to change the tube inside the rear tire, and I didn't reattach the rear wheel correctly. I kept turning the nut only on one side until I eventually twisted off the threading of the gear indicator pin.
Scientists at the DOE/Argonne National Laboratory say they've developed a new method for recycling high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into a fully recyclable and potentially biodegradable material that can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality.
Nobody knows all the plastic types, what the acronyms mean, which "bio-degradable" type is bio-degradable and which isn't, how to sort them into their bins, how to sort them at the recycling plant, or how to decontaminate and recycle them sustainably. That's why almost all of it is in landfills or the oceans.
The only solution is to halt production of all non-essential plastic. Essential might be for medical use for example.
One of many reports on the issue:
"Plastic Recycling Doesn’t Work and Will Never Work"
