Paris rubbish collectors threaten Olympics strike over 'excessive workload' (www.france24.com)

Paris rubbish collectors could strike over the summer, a major French union said Thursday, raising the spectre of piles of stinking trash on the streets during the Olympic Games. Walkouts could start in May and continue from July 1 to September 8, the CGT union branch representing binmen warned, a period that includes the Games,...

Cheap crappy picture frame. This isn't even wood, it's some kind of plastic foam with a wood pattern printed on it.

You can see the pixels in a section of the photo.

Glued it together anyways, as it apparently has emotional value? It was an employment anniversary gift. Shows how valued the employees are, if you ask me 😬

Lovely roads, great countryside and people insist on throwing their #rubbish from their cars! 🤬🫣

Litter pick this morning at a grot-spot on a local footpath that has been getting worse every time I see it.

Decided to do something about, and cleared a bucket full of the usual things - plastic bottles, beer cans, dog poo bags, disposable vape boxes.

Also a bag of alcohol bottles & 4 bags of garden waste, all dumped next to a litter bin.

Bottles will go to the bottlebank later, garden waste to my garden bin for the Council to collect, few other bits for recycling.

Theory of #RenewableEnergy is that it’s very low surface power density, and the practice is that because of this, it occupies vast amounts of one non-renewable resource that everyone forgets about: land surface. In terms of surface power density PV outputs 6.63 W/m2, wind power 1.84 W/m2. Nuclear - 240.81 W/m2. That means for one 1 W of power you need to allocate 120x more land for wind than nuclear, and that is not only for the space occupied by the actual plant but everything: mining, manufacturing, operations, decommissioning.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/21/solar-farms-energy-power-california-mojave-desert

Some people will argue that utility-scale renewables are not good indeed, but we should stick to decentralised rooftop or wall PV installations. Except that decentralisation requires vast redundancy of infrastructure (cabling, inverters), much lower efficiency, which results in 4x higher production cost (LCOE) per kWh, thus nullifying the claimed lower cost of renewables.

Engineers have been trying to get that message to the broad public long ago: a PV farm or wind turbine look really nice at distance. But an utility-scale renewables power plant is what any other power plant is: a huge, industrial compound, installed on steel and concrete foundation interfering with the land it occupies.

Recycling in the US (and many Western countries, for that matter) is a sham. It always was.

In reality, most of the plastic placed in recycling bins were never turned into new products.

Now China has stopped taking that waste, the myth of near infinite consumption without the guilt of waste has been exposed for the lie that it always was.

That's not to say that we shouldn't aim for a sustainable circular economy. Of course we should.

But we'll need much bigger changes to make it happen.

"For decades, we were sending the bulk of our recycling to China—tons and tons of it, sent over on ships... But last year, the country restricted imports of certain recyclables... Waste-management companies are telling [municipalities] there is no longer a market for their recycling.

"These municipalities have two choices: pay much higher rates to get rid of recycling, or throw it all away.

"Most are choosing the latter.

"When [its kerbside recycling] program launched, Franklin [in New Hampshire] could break even on recycling by selling it for $6 a ton. Now the transfer station is charging the town $125 a ton to recycle, or $68 a ton to incinerate.

"This end of recycling comes at a time when the US is creating more waste than ever. In 2015, the most recent year for which national data are available, America generated 262.4 million tons of waste, up 4.5% from 2010 and 60% from 1985."

😢

Every country needs to be as self-sufficient as possible.

If a country can't handle the #Waste / #Rubbish / #Trash / #Litter it produces, in-house, then it's time to cut down on the waste produced, not dump it off on another country, be it India, China, or wherever.

We need to work towards the #CircularEcomony if we are to survive.

Everyone, please don't let packaging fool you.

When it says "recycleable" it does not mean "likely to be recycled".

According to my own online research, the #recycling systems in #Europe and the #US are generally most likely to recycle code 1 and 2 plastics, and sometimes code 5.

So just pay attention to the recycling codes and speak after me: "👏 One and 👏 two and 👏 maybe 👏 five!"
