My friend, Tom, is a private #gourmet chef & he also teaches about #WildFoods#foraging, harvesting from wild nature & cooking with wild foods. He taught a seaweed #ForagingWorkshop recently, at Whiffin Spit.
Check out his website, for info on past & upcoming events. Next #EducationalWorkshop is in late June - Cooking In Nature.

We were delighted to work on this important project, that aims to reduce barriers to seaweed cultivation in Wales. 🌊🦭 https://projectmadoc.cymru/
Wales has a brilliant opportunity to develop long-term, sustainable industries based on seaweed cultivation in some of our coastal communities. This report is a significant step in demonstrating how some of the existing barriers can be tackled 👏✊🏴
Is it time to say so long to sushi, and later to laverbread?
Scientists plan ‘seaweed breakthrough’ to restore threatened species.
Seaweeds play a vital role in the modern world, but their existence is under threat.
As climate change, disease and invasive species puts the algae under pressure, an international team of scientists has just started work on a project to protect and restore seaweed stocks
"A world-first Australian study is investigating whether too much artificial light exposure at night can affect #seaweed. For us humans, seeing blue and other forms of light during the night can disrupt our natural sleep cycle. And researchers in Sydney are trying to find out how much our coastal seaweed forests are also impacted."

Our #Chusen#FactoryTour in #Sakai * was a lot of fun though a while ago - so we were super excited we got a call back for a factory tour of the Suma Seaweed (#Nori ) Factory.
Prologue1: They had a booth/tent at the EatLocalKobe event at #SumaBeach in Oct that we went to in Oct. They said the factory was at the end of the beach and to contact in Dec for tours.

First we went up the platforms to look into the big outdoor tanks where the seaweed gets washed first (with seawater) - there are two sets, stages here. [These were empty now - bad sea conditions today]
Collecting Kelp on the Maine Coast. Lobster fisherman Steve Train and his daughter (my friend) Hattie are farming kelp in the off season. Seaweed is a fast-growing and versatile protein source. Growing the stuff is remarkably straightforward: Farmers cast seedlings out on ropes and submerge them until they’re ready to harvest a few months later. The market, which stood at $15 billion two years ago, is projected to hit $24.92 billion in 2028. #sustainable#kelp#maine
'Combining chitosan, a biopolymer that makes crab shells hard, with agarose, a biopolymer extracted from seaweed that is used to make gels, creates unique biopolymer composite films with enhanced strength. The films are also biodegradable, have antibacterial properties, repel water and are transparent. The findings could eventually lead to sustainable packaging films for food and consumer goods.'
A fossil I found on Cape Breton Island a few years ago. I think it’s seaweed, but no idea what kind. I have another which looks like a broad strand of kelp. #fossil#fossils#seaweed
"#Seaweed used to reduce #methane#emissions in ruminant animals has been harvested in [West Australia] for the first time
Just 5 grams of the seaweed per kilogram of feed reduced methane in #cows' burps by up to 95 per cent "
@MeanwhileinCanada it's all very concerning and it now seems like action will not happen. On a positive note I think seaweed is a possible solution with the added bonus that it won't go on fire whilst reducing CO2 ppm if only saying it was enough. I also like the flavour of seaweed and whilst I do like wood I don't cook with it. #madmax#seaweed#ohlookwedestroyedtheplanet
