One of my earliest encounters with Japanese food was a dish my mother-in-law would prepare late in the spring: tender "takenoko" (bamboo shoots) and newly harvested fronds of "wakame" (brown seaweed) simmered together in a smoky, soy-tinged broth. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2024/05/26/food-drink/washoku-essentials-wakame-bamboo/ #life #fooddrink #recipe #japanesecooking #seaweed #bamboo

Wales has a brilliant opportunity to develop long-term, sustainable industries based on seaweed cultivation in some of our coastal communities. This report is a significant step in demonstrating how some of the existing barriers can be tackled 👏✊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Scientists plan ‘seaweed breakthrough’ to restore threatened species.

Seaweeds play a vital role in the modern world, but their existence is under threat.

As climate change, disease and invasive species puts the algae under pressure, an international team of scientists has just started work on a project to protect and restore seaweed stocks

Collecting Kelp on the Maine Coast. Lobster fisherman Steve Train and his daughter (my friend) Hattie are farming kelp in the off season. Seaweed is a fast-growing and versatile protein source. Growing the stuff is remarkably straightforward: Farmers cast seedlings out on ropes and submerge them until they’re ready to harvest a few months later. The market, which stood at $15 billion two years ago, is projected to hit $24.92 billion in 2028.

'Combining chitosan, a biopolymer that makes crab shells hard, with agarose, a biopolymer extracted from seaweed that is used to make gels, creates unique biopolymer composite films with enhanced strength. The films are also biodegradable, have antibacterial properties, repel water and are transparent. The findings could eventually lead to sustainable packaging films for food and consumer goods.'

Canada had our worst fire season ever recorded this year.

Australia's fire season is just starting and it is devastating.

The scale of fires in NW Australia is an area bigger than Western Europe has been on fire at some point over the last 6 weeks.

Stay safe down under.

The man-made climate breakdown is 1000 times more costly than getting off fossil fuels.

The time for talking has long past. We need to move quickly to transition. Canada has a lot of work to do on this front.

bloodoutofstone,
@bloodoutofstone@mas.to avatar

@MeanwhileinCanada it's all very concerning and it now seems like action will not happen. On a positive note I think seaweed is a possible solution with the added bonus that it won't go on fire whilst reducing CO2 ppm if only saying it was enough. I also like the flavour of seaweed and whilst I do like wood I don't cook with it.
