Widespread Deposition In A Coastal Bay Following Three Major 2017 Hurricanes (Irma, Jose, And Maria) [USVI]

https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-019-43062-4 <-- shared paper

photo - Runoff in the waters near Magens Bay, St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, after the passage of Hurricane Irma.
A difference map of Coral Bay, St. John, USVI. The post-storm November 2017 survey was subtracted from the pre-storm August 2017 survey. Deposition is indicated by positive values (green, yellow, orange, red); erosion in negative values (blue). The largest area of deposition (outlined with a black dashed line) is characterized by deposition ranging from 20 to 60 cm. Coral mounds in central Johnson Bay have a general flute mark pattern of deposition toward Coral Harbor and erosion to seaward. Six sediment cores (white circles) were collected in November of 2017.
• Bottom Left: Eastern Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands with the 2017 hurricane tracks from Category 5 Hurricanes Irma and Maria. St. John, US Virgin Islands sits on a shelf ~60 meters below sea level (This map was generated using NOAA’s U.S. Virgin Islands 1 arc-second MHW Coastal Digital Elevation Model) • Top Left: St. John, US Virgin Islands showing the watershed source area (This map and the map shown to the right were generated using US Army Corps of Engineers US Virgin Islands Orthophoto Mosaic) • Right: Coral Bay, St. John with its protected waters and lands. Bathymetry shown was collected after the 2017 hurricane season in November and December of 2017.

I've been doing a #DistanceLearning course on #RemoteSensing recently, just for fun. It's amazing how much high-quality Earth imagery is available for free!
I've been using #Landsat data to look at #deforestation in the #Amazon, here's my change map showing the loss of forest in a 150x150km region around the town of Apuí since 1984. It's definitely got worse in recent years... 😞

Waiting at the hairdresser so time for one of my periodic #ClearTheTabs threads on random stuff I have open in my #Firefox...

First up a paper I think @DrEvanGowan shared on Palaeo #SeaLevels from Australia that appear to confirm the vulnerability of #Antarctica to loss under #ClimateChange 1/many

Ruth_Mottram,

We are going through the bounty and diversity of this planet in full knowledge of our actions - we see it all happen from #Space.

But #RemoteSensing can also play a role in enforcement #ParisAgreement. A call to arms:
" EO science must undergo a radical overhaul: it must become more user-oriented, collaborative, and transdisciplinary; span the range from fiducial to contextual data; and embrace new technologies for data analysis (e.g., artificial intelligence)."

Strong front across the South producing lightning in this image too. I don't think I've ever seen such an intense lightning strike that it burned out the pixels on a scan line for that long of a period!

I am a curious and tenacious #researchanddevelopment scientist with specialties in multi-spectral #remotesensing, both #geospatial and #Astronomy -related. I spent the past 5 years inventing new and exciting ways to exploit high-resolution satellite imagery and 15 years before that as a research astrophysicist.

What's next? I would appreciate any leads for the next step in my career!

We just released data on crown maps for 100 million trees in the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) with information on location, species identify, size, and alive/dead status.

We created this dataset by combining deep learning, remote sensing, and extensive field data to build models that can detect and classify individual trees. Models are almost 80% accurate and can be improved with additional field data collection.

So why the pink? This WorldView satellite image from 11/05/23 tells the story: our wetland in Central Maui isn't wet. It tends to be driest right before the winter rains, but I haven't seen it this dry where there is hardly any water at all in this area.

NASA Is Locating Ice On Mars With This New Map

“The map could help the agency decide where the first astronauts to the Red Planet should land. The more available water, the less missions will need to bring.
Buried ice will be a vital resource for the first people to set foot on Mars, serving as drinking water and a key ingredient for rocket fuel. But it would also be a major scientific target: Astronauts or robots could one day drill ice cores much as scientists do on Earth, uncovering the climate history of Mars and exploring potential habitats (past or present) for microbial life.…”
