It’s that time of year again, when the excellent Amtrak 30 day, 10 segment USA rail pass is on sale. Only $450! I’ve done it before, and it’s amazing. #rail#train#travel
One thing I miss from the other place is the thriving UK rail and trains community. Does anyone know any good accounts to follow on here? I've tried all these hashtags - #RailMastodon#TrainMastodon#Rail#Trains#LNER#Scotrail
but they don't have any traction (sorry 🙄)
And would be nice if the train companies had a social media presence here, that's the main reason I have to keep my tw*tterx account.
However, there is some good news, as KTMB will provide 6 additional #ETS services for Chinese New Year & school holiday, 4 for #KLSentral ↔ Ipoh and 2 for KL Sentral ↔ Padang Besar

🚨House of Commons Petition🚨
🚨 Sign and Boost 🚨
NDP Transport Critic Taylor Bachrach is sponsoring this petition to make achievable and important changes to VIA Rail including enshrining VIA Rail in Canadian law!
"We, the undersigned, Residents of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to:
Incorporate the contents of Bills C-371, the Rail Passenger Priority Act, and C-236/C-640 (41-2) the VIA Rail Canada Act, in a Government Bill and prioritize its passage through the legislative process;
Commit, in the 2024 federal budget, the funds necessary to renew VIA Rail’s long-distance fleet;
Provide passenger and worker representation on VIA Rail’s board of directors; and
Revise the High Frequency Rail project to protect VIA Rail’s role in delivering public passenger rail service along the Windsor to Quebec City corridor.”
The most important rail project that no one seems to know about in Southern California is Link US, which will create run-through tracks, meaning Union Station will have run-through service rather than be a stub.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his Singapore counterpart Lee Hsien Loong today witness the historic moment of the #RapidTransitSystemLink (#RTSLink) project being symbolically “connected” between #Malaysia & Singapore
It involves the completion of the #span which is the meeting point of the project’s #marineviaduct between #JohorBaru & Singapore
The construction had reached a progress level of 65% as of 31 Dec 2023, as scheduled
A route connecting #KualaLumpur and Bangkok will make it possible to link it to other regional #HSR lines to form larger networks that will reach Laos and China.
When the #northern stretch of #HS2 was canned last year, there was a widely held view that a swift sell-off of compulsory purchased land on route would make reviving the #rail project impossible & the sales would hand handy profits to the 'friends of Rishi'.
However, it now seems (as always) things have moved much more slowly, and no land sales are likely before the election, leaving Labour (if elected) the option to reviving HS2 North.
Whether that's a good or bad thing is another matter!
I found an interesting article from the 1920s discussing #interurban service in a town of 5,000.
"The new train schedule of the [interurban] has given [citizens] something to think about ... The schedule provides everything that anyone could ask for in [convenience] ... With service that is almost half hourly during certain portions of the day, there leaves but little if any room for the necessity of a bus line over the route..."
For those interested in such things, here are 2 657 images showing the Office of Road and Rail 2021/22 passenger travel data projected onto a shortest-path network for each of the active mainline railway stations https://github.com/anisotropi4/kingfisher/blob/main/station.md
For those interested in such things, here are four different cuts of the Office of Road and Rail 2021/22 passenger travel data projected onto a shortest-path network using the centre-line track-model.
These represent the passenger journey numbers either in a colour scale white-to-orange, scaled line width, or both.
The travel data was kindly provided by Alasdair Rae with the centre-line track-model by Peter Hicks through #OpenRailData.
The fact that #Columbus, OH, a city with a very similar population size to Amsterdam, still doesn't have any passenger #rail while Amsterdam has trams, subways, commuter trains, intercity trains, and international trains, says a lot about the staggering difference in the design and priorities of these cities.
Climate hardening transportation infrastructure is a good investment of tax money -- AND can be made a lot less expensive if it is paired with a re-think of land use policies, e.g. Do we want sprawl or dense walkable neighbourhoods? Do we want long commutes or 15 minute cities? Can we move freight by rail not in individual trucks? It's all related.
“Since its passage, the #IIJA has announced $400 billion in funding for more than 40,000 projects across the country, including nearly 8,000 bridge projects, 25 passenger #rail projects, 190 airport terminal projects, 445 port and waterway projects, 1,200 drinking and wastewater projects, and over 60 projects dedicated to improving the resilience and reliability of the energy #grid.”
