Vape juice with nicotine is addictive, but as far as we know from current research, less harmful than eating sugar. Vape juice without nicotine is both less addictive and less harmful than sugar. So the only aspect of vaping I can see a solid argument for banning is the disposable equipment.
"I just read Anand's new book The Persuaders [Anand Giridharadas: https://thepersuadersbook.com/]. He evinces or quotes a theory of messaging that says; you should start with an appeal to shared values, then identify a problem... then identify a villain."
"In a modern democracy... You have to have responsiveness and you have to have public involvement in the decisions all the time, not just the time of elections.
What happens in NZ is we tend to go to sleep between the elections and there isn't enough public involvement in the decision-making system. We need in this country much more deliberative democracy if we are not to go the way they've gone in the US or Britain ..."
No podcast will be longer than 45 minutes. 2. No film will be longer than 2.5 hours. EVER. 3. No book should be longer than 500 pages unless it really is good enough to win major awards. #books#podcasts#film#NotAsInterestingAsYouThinkYouAre
I recently realised that a lot of podcasts I listen to provoke anger, sadness or annoyance. Can you recommend me podcasts that makes you feel calm, inspired, happy or thoughtful?
"...we backtracked on our election pledge to remove the surtax on superannuation. Because morally I couldn't justify to myself that we would give a tax concession to the wealthy retirees - which removing the surtax would do - while we were taking some off those who were in much poorer circumstances."
"... people who cannot meet their most basic needs; that is where you want to see the growth of their incomes, and the growth of public services that serve them, right? ... That's where - if anywhere in the world - we want to see 'economic growth' ... and it's got to be distributive, so it's actually shared, and it's got to be regenerative, so it doesn't destroy the planet as it happens."
"As one famous Australian constitutional lawyer said, and it remains the case even under MMP... NZ is an Executive paradise. The sovereignty of Parliament in NZ - which means Parliament can pass any law it likes - is actually the sovereignty of the Executive, not of the Parliament. And that is why so many Opposition MPs have such a frustrating life, because they have very little influence over anything."
Wife and I were watching the Simpsons and Homer is singing Henry the VIII, I Am by Herman's Hermits and I laugh, and mention it's a real song (as there are just SO MANY hilarious and weird pop culture references in the Simpsons) and she wasn't aware (hell, there's a ton of weird old jokes that regularly go over BOTH of our heads on the Simpsons, and I really had no idea of the EXTENT of this until we did deep dives on all the episodes on a podcast we did last October - https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcast-of-horror).
Anyway, I mean, I'm 43, but she's younger (Herman's was before both of our time really, but I figured maybe she'd recognize another Herman's song from something- a commercial, or potentially another Simpsons episode)?
I play a little of There's a Kind of Hush, she doesn't recognize it. A little bit of I'm Into Something Good (https://youtu.be/n0J6q42zLH0) and she recognizes the hook. Was starting to think maybe I'd listened to too many old songs on the radio. 😂 I dig Herman's Hermits, though, and a lot of weird old 60s pop like that.
"This is exactly the same mechanism to what free speech campaigners always complain about, which is called 'cancellation', which is just social media mobs disagreeing with you en masse, right?"
No Hayden, cancellation is not people disagreeing with you. It's people trying to demonise you by willfully misrepresenting what you said or did, or making things up. Then trying to get more people to ignorantly echo them.
"I'm basically [Joe Biden's] age - which means I shouldn't be in charge of anything - and I grew up in an era in which Leon Uris framed the debate. We all grew up very admiring of what we thought Israel represented. I don't think Biden's ever discovered that it doesn't represent those things."
Any one have some suggestions for health/fitness/longevity podcasts of that are interesting and not full of woo woo? Now that I'm in more of a fitness mindset and I've dropped some tech podcasts that I just wasn't enjoying any longer I've been trying to find more high quality fitness podcasts. I'm coming up somewhat empty though. The top results in my podcast app, Downcast, seems to be full of the usual trendy, influencer, pseudo-science laden crap. "Superfood" this and "what 'they' don't want you to know" that. Carnivore diet this, raw food vegan that, and again "the things 'they' don't want you to know" BS again. I lost a few back in my last fitness focus days of 2012-2014 to their parroting of anti-vax nonsense, buying into whacky stuff about magnetic fields, and pushing bizarre unfounded supplementation strategy. A few others seem to have regressed into the above categories since then and others just don't exist any longer. The only ones I have right now in regular rotation is Marathon Training Academy and probably 1/3 the episodes interest me from No Meat Athlete, and Rich Roll. I just add "Docs Who Lift" after seeing one of them on a Youtube video that I thought they did a good job on. Any others you all love? #health#fitness#running#podcasts#MarathonTrainingAcademy
Can #podcasting be made to work with #ActivityPub as well as #RSS? Then podcatchers could work like a #Mastodon client, allowing us to interact directly via comments, favorites and spreading around the best episodes via boosts. #podcasts
update: it exists but no podcatcher fully supports it yet.

"I think if you go back to the 1980s or 90s you don't actually hear about militaries... talking about information as a 'space' that they need to dominate. It's much more considered a kind of tool, or... even a weapon, but not up there with air, sea, land and space itself as a theatre of war."
The US government wants to make sure only they can use DataFarming platforms to spy on and influence US citizens. They're following the example set by the CCP, which has been blocking foreign-owned platforms for years, for similar reasons.
PeerTube, the Fediverse's alternative to YouTube, is normally associated with video. However, you can also upload audio files directly to PeerTube. It will accept lots of audio formats including .mp3, .ogg, .aac, .flac, .wma etc.
You can optionally upload an image file as a thumbnail. If not, audio files will show a black screen by default.

Recently my iOS podcast app of choice for years, Castro, basically stopped working. The app used a bespoke server to syndicate podcasts, and it seems to have died making the app useless. The developer is not responding.
Wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a replacement? I’m trying Overcast but I just can’t get my head round the UI yet to make it work in the way I want.
Considering trying out the default Apple Podcasts app.
Intriguing to see an up-and-coming ACT MP and a long-serving Nat MP debate each other;
"I don't think we have to have this obsession with wanting to cut New Zealanders' jobs. In fact, people are important. I don't care whether they're in the private, sector, the public sector, or a politician like myself, they're all people, and this obsession to just go and cut 15,000 jobs is not the way forward."
