A new study has confirmed that the Gulf Stream, a crucial ocean current that helps regulate climate and sea levels, is weakening. The flow of warm water through the Florida Straits has slowed by 4% over the past four decades. This slowdown has significant implications for the world's climate, and scientists are concerned that it...
Astronomer Angelo Secchi demonstrates the Secchi disk, which measures water clarity, aboard Pope Pius IX's yacht, the L'Immaculata Concezion.
It is a plain white, circular disk 30 cm in diameter used to measure water transparency or turbidity in bodies of water. The disc is mounted on a pole or line and lowered slowly down in the water. The depth at which the disk is no longer visible is taken as a measure of the transparency of the water (Secchi depth).
With their stealth, speed and serrated teeth, sharks are predators to be reckoned with. And that’s before factoring in the cocaine some sharks may be eating
implausibly real... layer cake of #Antarctic cloud, Victoria Land mountains (some being 4 km high) and an ocean right at the point of #seaice forming... we slowly drifted up to it before starting a sampling line moving up the coast. #oceanography#cold
Well it’s time to head north - and as we do it has decided to snow so our little icebreaker looks like (northern hemisphere) Christmas .. likely no more sea ice or bergs … we likely have some proper waves ahead for the 6 day transit… although there is a path through the waves #Antarctica#Climate#Oceanography
Water pool refugees at lowtide.
I walked on limestone again and saw many of those little water holes with ocean creatures in it, who tried to hide there until the next tide would come in. Look at the sea anemone who is just wrapping herself in. I also wonder if the white underground could be some sort of salt deposit from the salty water. There are moments when I'd really like to be an oceanographer...
Near-global daily average ocean surface temperatures have been at record high levels since mid-March and are still remarkably high at the time of year when the global average #sst typically approaches the lowest levels of the year. Because water is so much more dense than air, this is so, so impactful for the entire Earth system and will reverberate for many months. Graphic courtesy Climate Reanalyzer/U. Waves are getting bigger and surf at least 13 feet (about 4 meters) tall is becoming more common off California's coast as the planet warms, according to innovative new research that tracked the increasing height from historical data gathered over the past 90 years.
Swiss scientist Alexander Agassiz died #OTD in 1910.
He assisted Charles Wyville Thomson in the examination & classification of the collections of the 1872 Challenger Expedition, and wrote the Review of the Echini (2 vols., 1872–1874) in the reports. Agassiz's legacy lies in his contributions to marine science & geology particularly his studies on coral reefs and his efforts to advance the field of oceanography.
Reasonably accurate representation… the close metal ship is in sharp focus and the world outside is ever so slightly blurry… just left the 60S #oceanography
It's a hot day at a Santa Monica beach, and the children splashing each other aren't the only youngsters in the water. Somewhere not far from the shore swims a group of five or more juvenile white sharks.
Worlds oceans between 60°S and 60°N have (preliminary analysis) equaled the highest average sea surface temperature on record that was set in early April 2023. This quite unusual given that the (near) global peak in #sst most years occurs in late March or early April. Graphic courtesy U. Shallow waters off south Florida topped 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8C) for several hours on Monday, potentially setting a new world record with temperatures more commonly associated with hot tubs.
so we got our awesome #OceanGlider that could back - #Manaia - it was a nervous juggle getting it to surface away from an advancing field of #SeaIce - all while we were stuck with weather - as it was after a 50 km journey it ended up just being 100 m the right side of a messy band of ice. It would have been quite the pain if it had come up in that chilly soup. #climate#Oceanography#robots
“The squid, which was about 75cm long, descended on our camera assuming it was prey, and tried to startle it with is huge bioluminescent headlights,” Associate Professor Stewart said.
PODCAST: Levke Caesar: “Oceanic Slowdown: Decoding the AMOC”
By Nate Hagens, originally published by The Great Simplification May 24, 2024
"...Nate is joined by climate physicist Levke Caesar for a comprehensive overview of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its connections to broader planetary systems. Amid a complex...interconnected climate system, the AMOC is a powerful force for regulating temps between the Northern & Southern Hemispheres along the Atlantic Ocean – yet it’s estimated to have slowed down by about 15% over the last few decades. What are the possible domino effects of this slowing oceanic powerhouse at a regional & global scale? How well do we understand what drives the AMOC, its cyclical patterns, and connections with other currents? ...how does the AMOC interact with other biospheric mechanisms that have shaped our stable, life-supporting planetary home?"
