Sometimes I wonder if I should try a different #shell. The thing is if I have to hang on to #bash for compatibility reasons do I really want to have something else also? It's like buying a second hammer just because it's fancier than the regular one you have. Maybe if I was a carpenter, I'd do it. But if I just hammer a nail every once in a while, do I really need the fancy hammer?
The more I am digging in to #linux, the more I am realizing I really need to take the time to grok #iptables. This way I'll understand what tools like #firewalld and #ufw are really doing.
You know #Linux would be heaps better if the default command line shell was #PowerShell.
There I've said it. #Bash is just obscure magic incantations held together with arcane #regex spells. In powershell it be like
Do-TheThing -input someFile.file -with-someOption -Verbose -output JSON -outputfile hello.txt
in bash it's
dsf --fcHFn %sD|sed s/fdH%[0-9]/$ >> &1 | tee -X | $1 ${json/ghg/} hello.txt <<(foo)
After taking over the co-maintenance of Metronome from @KekunPlazas, I'm happy to announce a new version 1.2.1. This mainly fixes a problem in the last release, updating the runtime so that dark mode is now supported. It also adds some minor UI improvements and allows the metronome to be toggled using the space bar.
The new version should be available on #Flathub soon™
Windows handheld gaming PCs existed before the Deck, and there’s been a parade of them in the 15 months afterward. Some are more powerful. Many boast premium build quality. Almost all have higher-resolution screens. Yet none have offered the combination of battery life, portability, and price as Valve’s portable. "
Windows users: "Omg! I can't believe Microsoft is doing X"
Also Windows users: "No, I don't want to switch to an OS that is freely given away, does everything I need, has exactly the same browser that I do everything in, also has Steam games, has a free office suite that is better suited to what I do than the one I pay a subscription for, and doesn't demand a new computer for the latest version!"
It's fucking Stockholm syndrome, capitalism style!
Ok day 3 on #Gnome and Nautilus is getting on my nerves... Can't build a lot of packages I host on my repos from AUR... I have to boot my KDE VM to successfully build them there... Small annoyances otherwise it's good. Easily recommendable. I consider it a semi-success. #Linux#FOSS
Anyone have good UPS/APC recommendations for something that a) works with #Linux and b) would power a small form factor desktop for a few minutes but still leave time to shut down safely?
Heard back from the repair shop on the Proxmox box. The tech was unable to replicate my issues that look a whole lot like CMOS battery failure, so I guess power loss is wiping my BIOS settings in a way that pulling the plug doesn't seem to. I certainly have seen that inconsistency myself, so my hope is that keeping the power from just cutting out abruptly might be all that's needed to keep this thing going.
I'd like to pick something up in the next day or two, but don't know if I have the bandwidth to thoroughly research my options. And I'm finding a bunch of stuff with custom software, so am vaguely terrified that I'll end up with something that won't work with Linux. ~$200 budget, preferably something I can get on Amazon so it arrives quick. Server returns this weekend.
May flowers bring COSMIC showers! Check out the latest developments on COSMIC DE in our May Update blog. This month you can even learn about updates to Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS! https://s76.co/9SkQYrHt
As I just discovered, #Mastodon can be installed as a Progressive Web App. This is supported by Chromium-based browsers and possibly others.
I can now run it directly from my #GNOME desktop. #PWA#Chromium#linux
@bragefuglseth If they (and perhaps also the GTK 4 developers) fix their #accessibility support, I'll be able to use Tuba.
I tried it, but I wasn't able to bring keyboard focus to the editable field to enter the server name, hence couldn't advance beyond the first dialogue.
Running GNOME 44.1, a recent version of the Orca screen reader from Git, and Tuba from the Arch User Repository. #linux#ScreenReader
