At our friends' house for game night, and I’m struggling a bit with chronic illness stuff (haven’t talked about this but I’m sure it’ll be unsurprising to find out that in this time of empty nest stress I’m also having a bad ME/CFS flare). Anyway while they play games I’m in the hammock. There’s a #hummingbird dancing all over the place and it finally stopped moving long enough to get this photo.
Another day, another YouTube Short. In this one I receive Spellbinders Better Press Plates of the Month for February. Then I create two quick cards with them. They're very shiny! ✨
Anna’s Hummingbirds stay in Seattle all winter long. Growing up in Finland hummingbirds were this elusive tropical thing that you only see in magazines. Its so fun to be able to see them all the time now! This was taken at Union Bay, near UW in Seattle.
The Nikon Z6ii continues to amaze me. I saw this hummingbird perched at the top of a very tall tree. I had my 500mm lens, but it is ƒ/5.6 and the bird was in the shadow, so not much light to go around. AND YET!
Modern cameras are a marvel. See below, before and after processing the raw image.
My sweet hummingbird who stayed in the near garden started Jan 5 seems to have migrated... I checked my notes & she came & went about the same time last year so I won't blame the terrible hailstorm we had the other night...
This collage is from 2023, we didn't have anywhere near as many Rufous this year in my yard
Lately, many Anna's Hummingbirds have been collecting seeds from an aster. I've seen them collect spiderwebs and moss before, but never seed tufts. #nature#birds#hummingbird#photography
Many South American hummingbirds have the loveliest descriptive names, such as this Sparkling Violet-ear. Photo by my husband, Jim DeWitt. #birds#birding#Ecuador#hummingbird
woke up at first light, it was 28 deg F- ran out to put up hummingbird feeders & a hummingbird (I think the same one I photo'd yesterday!) immediately came for the goodies--
at this temp the sugar molecules will keep the sugar water from freezing.... much cooler, & i keep back a feeder to swap out when the other one starts to freeze...
it warms my heart to know they're watching us & think at least some of us can be relied on
"my garden is crispy frozen & i blame you"-- nonetheless, this hummingbird spent the night in the garden (i saw where she perched) so she'd be here at first light for first drink from the feeders
The feeder has liquid inside but was utterly encased in ice.
(Don't worry, one of our three feeders was out of the rain and was still usable. But there were hummingbirds watching me drink my coffee this morning as they patrolled the one ice-free feeder.)
