Remember #Patreon set up new on-by-default sharing of your account information with every other Patreon user (and maybe the world)? Remember people posting how to turn it off, because they were using confusing language/dark patterns to try to #trick you into oversharing?
I got the "welcome to the new Patreon" today, and ... they've turned the "Community Profile" setting back on after I deliberately turned it off.
Our subscriptions mostly pay for the salesmen and the ads. They sell ads first, IT second. So I'm not gonna cry for RedHat. The image of the poor developers working in a cave, struggling to make money is only in our mind. They had a perfectly functional model but decided to sabotage some of it to try to squeeze even more money....
Pfizer said Wednesday that it will price its patented Covid treatment nirmatrelvir-ritonavir—sold under the brand name Paxlovid—at $1,390 for a five-day course. Researchers Melissa J. Barber and Dzintars Gotham recently estimated it costs Pfizer $13 to produce five days’ worth of the drug, which is taken in three-pill doses.
That is bullcrap. Memory is memory no matter it’s unified memory or just regular old memory. Sure, unified memory is more efficient since the computer has to do less work for things that use the GPU, but if you have ton of Chrome tabs open, of course it won't survive on an M3 Mac with only 8 GB of memory and have the out of memory message, compared to if it had 16 GB in the first place.
This is Apple trying to justify selling their computers with only a stingy amount of RAM in 2023, when computers come with at least 16 GB at that price point Macbooks start at. I like Apple products, but this is just ridiculous.
So, I may be a "doomsayer" (I consider myself a realist), but I'm always trying to see if there's a solution to getting us out of the mess we're in. Perhaps I would describe myself as an optimistic pessimist. Anyhow, based on my recent research, here are some of the solutions I think we (humanity) should pursue collectively...
Plug up the #MethaneLeaks! Seriously! That's a big part of the problem!
Make the price of #meat expensive! I remember when having meat was considered a special occasion -- not a daily occurrence.
Make things out of #RomanConcrete. Now that we've cracked the recipe, there's no excuse not to use it! Especially with rising sea levels (Roman concrete holds up better when exposed to water).
Manufacture stuff that lasts! No more #PlannedObsolescence -- items that can't be upgraded and/or repaired by a skilled user or a local repair shop!
Utilize new (and ancient) technologies to the max! #SolarPrisms, reflective white paint, building new structures with #skywells, #geothermal and other ways to cool/heat spaces without using #FossilFuels!
That's just a few off the top of my head. I think a lot of the solutions are right in front of us -- but #greed and #Oligarchy are keeping them from being implemented!
US research suggests that 92 minutes is the optimum length for a film. But I have sat through long films that felt short and short films that felt buttock-annihilatingly long....
Hanlon's razor is the proposition that one should "Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence." It's actually a Napoleon quote.
To which I'll add, LeftistLawyer's first #capitalist corollary --
"Never ascribe to incompetence, that which is adequately explained by #greed."
Which, if you think about it, is really just a euphemism for malice. You have to be ok with the oblique suffering of others to be a good capitalist.
So please stop scratching your heads in confusion about why so many things are so fucked up. We celebrate immiserating the poor and lionizing malicious greed in the capitalist world. Hanlon was the greatest elite enabler of all time.
Hi, everyone. I really need to vent. I don't expect anybody to actually read this whole thing, but if you do I'd love it if you could share your thoughts with me....
“CEOs of top 100 ‘low-wage’ US firms earn $601 for every $1 by worker.”
I’d like for these CEOs to explain what they actually do that results in 600x the amount of output when compared to the hardworking folks actually working.
Public Storage has cut back on employees so that the office is only staffed about 1/3 of the time...and the schedule is not posted. They've now made it so you have to pay a "transaction fee" of up to $20 to pay your rent by phone.
The only convenient methods they're allowing for payment are paying via the website or via an app, both of which allow them the usual data mining.
Supposedly you can pay by mail to the local office as well, but I'm not sure... #Greed
Reminder that RedHat makes A LOT of money already. The results of the 2019 fiscal year show that RedHat spends twice as much money on ads and sales people than on developers. (www.businesswire.com)

“The Reddit corpus of data is really valuable. But we don’t need to give all of that value to some of the largest companies in the world for free,” said Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit. (daringfireball.net)
Is there any question?
