🆕 blog! “Thoughts on building an NFC reader for the Framework laptop”
The Framework laptop has several little slots which can be used be used to expand the functionality of the laptop. They convert the internal USB-C ports into a different sort of port. For example, Framework sells an official HDMI card and Ethernet card: But the community have bu…
In this one, we have the Cyber Resiliency Act, a new EU set of regulations that might seriously harm Open Source software, we have repairable laptops from #Framework and (in the future) from #Lenovo, and we have some big performance improvements for #Intel GPUs on Linux:
If you really like the principles of the #Framework laptop, but their lineup doesn’t work for you, you need bigger hardware, a GPU, cheaper options or just more customization, then I have the next best thing!
They support #Linux, #CoreBoot, they have more laptops, and pretty much the same repairability as a Framework, without the generational upgrades:
I’ve written down most of what I’ve learned about xcframeworks into this blog post. I hope it can be a one-stop shop to answer all your practical questions, including:
I have a kid headed off to college who wants a @frameworkcomputer DIY 13" system to run @fedora on while studying CS. ❤️
What are the tradeoffs between the Intel and AMD variants, specifically for running Linux, specifically the next-generation systems (13th Gen Intel Core or AMD Ryzen 7040 Series) currently available for pre-order?
Webcam? (I don't know whether Frame.work are using Intel's proprietary, closed-source, non-upstreamed webcam implementation on their Alder/Raptor Lake systems.)
Battery life?
Performance?
Other technical considerations?
JTBC I'm not looking for anti-Intel or anti-AMD comments, just technical information, with a focus on good support from a fully open source install.
..but I pushed pause because, while my inbox is rocking, I don't have my #ActivityPub outbox set up to process from a queue yet (it's still sending love). 😞 So back to unsexy "proper #code logic" for a bit..
..still confident I'll be following a few folks by Sunday tho - ugly test attached! 😆
Which JavaScript framework for the web frontend is the smallest, fastest, and best overall? If it's not listed, please mention it as a comment and why 🧑💻 → pls boost this toot :BoostOK:
#RustLang / #Cargo builds seem to run very slow on my #Framework AMD system. They didn't take anywhere near as long on my old Intel system. Looking at btop it only seems to use one thread during #compile, am I missing something?
– is trotzdem kein plasikbomber
– zwar einen langsamen (immernoch schade) aber dafür doch schönen bildschirm hat
Now, I am realizing it is becoming quite cumbersome to maintain and to adapt to the changeable nature of my craziness. Code is messy and probably a bit bloated, I am not so expert or have enough time to work on improving the performance…
maybe it is time to start using a framework or something, but I have no idea about this stuff. My only imperatives are not to have any front end #JavaScript and have as little abstraction as possible. I would just like to make my life easier and keep the development of my personal website a fun thing to do rather than a stressful chore.
Any thoughts? Suggestions? Please feel free to digress, I am eager to learn about the topic.
I created an account on botsin.space to showcase a framework I made, also called JokeBot, for posting #jokes on the fediverse; I originally posted jokes on my current account, but it was posting a bit too "loudly." Hence, that's why @JokeBot is here.
@JokeBot is currently fully operational; I already boosted its first post, and I will continue to boost its posts for my existing followers to see them.
How is GNOME these days? My #Framework laptop is shipping and I'm going to try running #Fedora on it and I haven't done GUI Linux desktop for a while. I could use a Fedora Spin, but if GNOME is working well these days I would rather simplify my life and not try to do something that isn't the most supported thing by the distro.
Oh, by the way, since the optimisations I made on the bundle size, it now takes ~3.61 seconds to download and install Kitten¹ on my machine and ~1 second to update it (the initial install takes longer as Kitten downloads its own Node.js runtime and that takes the bulk of the time).
Every second you don’t spend waiting for something is a second you can spend doing something else 🤓
What are the things you should pay extra attention to when you're about to release a library, framework or the code of your entire company as open-source? So far I've come up with documentation, licensing, double checking every secret is removed from the code. From the #GreaterThanCode podcast I've learnt that hospitality and welcoming others are quite important. What do you think I shouldn't forget?
It's happening... well, it may come after I leave to Jersey for Thanksgiving, but I can finally move the Cevio AI and Rocette Studio stuff off my GPD Win 4 so it can become a dedicated gaming PC handheld again.
"Quick" Question: If you would build a new #web#application, what would currently be "the best" development language and/or #framework (#webframework) for that?
"Best" as in reliable, #secure, easy to get personal and future proof?
The Framework Laptop 16 will have in-house support and installation guides for Fedora! With its AMD CPU and GPU you will be teed up for success on Linux.
