Not even three days using a rolling release (OpenSUSE Tumbleweed) and I've already broken Wayland sessions of KDE Plasma (log in and it hangs immediately after entering my password). X11 sessions of Plasma still work at least. 🤷
Received and assembled my #framework16 laptop earlier today (sadly I don't have better pics rn). Gotta say, coming from a 14 inch laptop, it does seem kinda big and heavy. It surprisingly fits in my backpack though, that was a suprise, I was expecting needing to buy a bigger one.
Now I just need to wait for the SSD, which I ordered separately, to arrive (hopefully tomorrow).
I need the #Unifying#dongle (lower latency), but don't want it sticking out and losing a whole slot.
So I'm going to throw a USB hub and the peeled dongle on a PCB and hope it all works out :D
As a further experiment, I routed the USB A SS lines past the hub (USB 2 D+/D- connected to port 1 of the hub).
Not sure if this will play nice with USB drivers, but it's worth a try.
It features room for 2-3 skinned dongles while still providing an external USB A 3 port.
I tested it and it works like a charm* !
The receiver and different USB 2 and even USB 3 devices worked on the first attempt.
Massive props to @frameworkcomputer for making the whole development process very easy, with all needed information already public and even supplying a base 3D-printing-ready #ExpansionCard model.
So I pre-ordered the Framework 16 laptop back in September 2023.
I ended up in batch 12, which I believe is the last batch assigned to Q1.
Now, it's almost March and as they're currently busy shipping out batch 3 I was wondering: are they really going to get 9 more batches out in 1 more month?
So I asked them, and the start of their response was "we can't give specific order dates, etc etc" the response did end with this sentence:
"Rest assured that we are still within the time frame for Q1 (January-March)"
It's very frustrating to watch all the @frameworkcomputer 16 reviews take off points because its a bit less performant, more noisy, and more expensive than competing laptops, but they don't take off points for other models for repairability, sustainability, and upgradability. Plus only some reviewers mentioned these were not Golden Units. What the Framework team has pulled off is basically a miracle, and they should be able to address many of these issues with minor upgrades and software. #righttorepair#linux#laptop#framework16#framework
