This may be an unpopular take, but...
I don't think any blind person will ever be completely independent. I do, however, think that every blind person can be self-sufficient. Independence, to me, implies a lack of reliance on anyone/anything. But everyone needs help sometimes. Self-sufficiency, on the other hand, is about having the tools you need, and the ability to get assistance, to go where you need to go/do what you need to do.
Thoughts? #Blind#Disability#Disabled#A11y#Accessibility
When people find out I’m an anarchist, a question I frequently get is “how would people with chronic illnesses like diabetes access treatment under anarchism?”
There are a lot of unspoken assumptions packed into that question that I thought I’d explore a bit.
The first is, of course, that people with chronic illnesses can access treatment in the context of capitalist modernity. Not everyone can! Many people in the world of states and capital suffer and die from lack of access to treatment.
Not because the treatment is unavailable, but because access is mediated through capitalist gatekeeping. People, today, right now, in allegedly rich countries, die because they cannot afford insulin. For them, the question of “but how would we access insulin under anarchism” is moot. Many others access it only at the cost of medical debt and other forms of indenture.
Can anyone point me in the direction of #disabled persons pursuing self-sufficient lifestyles? The #disability could be mental, physical, or other and the self-sufficiency could be from a #Permaculture, #Prepping or #Sustainability perspective.
Looking for social media accounts, books, blogs, youtube or people doing this kind of thing outside of modern socials that would be happy to have a conversation about it.
Several of them will be done in a chair. Some standing & others are laying down. I don't see many exercise vids made by & for #disabled folks available online. I got frustrated, trying to find exercise vids, made by fellow disabled folks.
So, I'm going to stop complaining about lack of them. I'll start to create them, myself.
I had more medical tests and bloodwork done yesterday and things are (shocker) still abnormal.
I’ve been struggling with all that comes with #LongCovid since last summer. Yet I’m not much closer to understand when or if I’ll ever get better. I’m in a flare up.
In 3 days I’ve gone from “I think I’ll be ok, this won’t last long?” to mostly bed bound —- again. Whiplash, over and over.
Transport for All (a disabled people's org) have a massive campaign going against rail ticket office closures.
If you care about disabled people being able to use the railway, please join in and respond to the consultation. We need to do all we can to resist this attack on the railway.
I ordered a device called a BT Speak about a week ago. It is a PDA-like device, with an 8-dot Perkins style Braille keyboard and speech output for the visually impaired.
When I got the device, it did not boot, and I contacted the company about it.
I was able to get the device working again by myself rather quickly, however here in lies the reason for my post.
The company were so quick to respond that a replacement unit is already on the way.
After some discussion, what has been decided is that I will be donating the replacement device, brand new, to a visually impaired child who may not be able to procure assistive technology via other means.

Just so folks know where we are. 231.68 raised, $2343.32 remaining. Eri's #rent for $1,500 is due in ONE DAY and we've barely made a dent in this ask for rent and #bills. Eri is trying to uplift themselves from their situation by finding #work, which hasn't been going well for them. Let's make sure a #trans#disabled#Black person gets to do that this #PrideMonth. The rest of the #LGBTQ+ community wouldn't be where they are without #queer Black folks. @mutualaid#TransCrowdfund
If you're not physically #disabled, with mobility issues & have friends who are, please try to keep these things in mind, before you take us out anywhere.
is parking close to where trail starts
bathrooms - are there any available & are they accessible?
A short walk for you may mean a long one for us. Please don't say, it's around the corner - if it's not because we have to know distances & elevation changes to gauge if we can do it or not
Please, #ablebodied#privileged people think people like me should just 'work harder'. Ya think your fucking spoiled kids could deal with #disabilities without your fucking bloody money??? SAY THAT SHIT TO MY FACE.
We are capable! We are human beings! We deserve human rights! We will fight for ours!
"When people think about #disability or #chronicillness, they tend to do so in a very black and white sort of way: Either you are completely #disabled, or you are not — this is your permanent status, and your disability (or lack thereof) will affect you the same way today as it will tomorrow.
Fair warning, I'm watching The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses this season to 100% be a hater. Not because of the questionable and disorienting animation decisions either.
This show looks like a cute romance #anime on the surface. But I'm #disabled so unfortunately, I see a lot more here and plan to take notes.
This show is based on a #shounen property, so it's marketed at younger guys. So essentially, this is a romantic power fantasy of a disabled woman — Mei is essentially legally blind — where said woman is dependent on the man to get through a lot of basic life tasks. When you start seeing a lot of that, or have experienced that kind of thing in real life, it quickly becomes almost impossible to enjoy.
There's a thing that happens in a lot of shows in general where someone who is called everything but disabled is considered cute despite their "quirks" and the like too. Think Komi Can't Communicate if you've seen it. Now, imagine if that main character weren't a conventionally attractive girl. Would the show still be a success? In Komi's case, that's part of why so many students flock to her!
This kind of thing was brought up back when #Wednesday first hit #Netflix too. How the behaviors people said were iconic were the kinds of things a lot of autistic kids were bullied for in school. How they're only considered "cool" now because of the conventionally attractive lady doing them.
I've got a feeling I'm going to have a LOT of criticisms about this show so buckle up and get ready to have your ableist mindsets challenged! #TheGirlILikeForgotHerGlasses
I can’t speak for the #disabled population as a whole, but the reason i’m giving consideration to filing an aDA suit is because I sick and tired of getting the professional version of Go fuck yourself when i ask for assistance. Telling someone you can't verify their identity becvause your tech is inaccessible is as unacceptable in 2024 as being told you can't eat in a restaurant because your physical disability is making customers uncomfortable.
First photoshoot in over two years! I was inspired to create a submission for an upcoming online gala event about opulent masks. I crafted the mask out of polymer clay & tack nails, & painted it gold. I cannot stress enough how much I love creating props for my photoshoots!
My very beautiful fiancée Iris, who has never modeled before, absolutely nailed it (tack nail pun intended lol) and I could not be prouder of her!
Since Black Friday is here, I wanted to share some of the items available in my shop 😊
I design and make cute stickers, enamel pins and notepads. My goal is to make people who felt like the “misfit” kid seen and mainstream the marginalised. 🌈🥰
making an #introduction for the new people who are looking for people to follow!
i am a #nonbinary#transguy from #germany, i am #disabled with #mecfs, #eds, #mcas & co and can infodump you about DIY #chronicIllness management for hours on end, i use a #wheelchair, i have messed up sleep, i am also very neurodivergent and mentally messed up but i have moved away from identifying myself with psychiatric diagnoses.
i post a lot about my life and random shit, i am in the process of #writing some books (in german, sorry), i am also learning #french and #dutch and i like #linguistics and basically i am one little ball of #fatigue and special interests.
Many blame the poor for being unable to sustain their lives in the systems of this society - not realizing the fact that there are many #eugenics at play and this is some of what many of the #marginalized call systemic oppression
The #disabled community has been marked and labeled as "dangerous" as have #minorities and those living in #poverty
The truth is our existence stands as proof that "hard work" doesn't save you from death and despair or poverty
Mutualaid request for a non-binary, disabled individual (ME/CFS) who is unable to work and is currently working through the US disability system. Funds raised will cover household and pet needs and other necessary items not covered by EBT. Help appreciated! Please boost!
