The second day of the hearings in South Africa's case against 'israel' in the International Court of Justice on the allegation of genocidal intent is starting now.
Can we talk about 12volts? Especially in #SouthAfrica right now with the power crisis... but why dont more devices standardise on 12v, my LG screen is 19v, my laptop is 19v... 12v feels like a greater standard and so can we not all start producing 12v devices, or if we must 24v?
South Africa's application to the International Court of Justice, to establish Israel’s responsibility for violations of the Genocide Convention, hold it fully accountable under international law, and ensure the protection of Palestinians in Gaza:
International Court of Justice (ICJ) begins to delivers its order in the case where South Africa charged ‘Israel’ with genocidal intent, and asked for provisional measures to halt genocide in Gaza
I play #Diablo4 primarily on #Xbox. But I’m heading to #SouthAfrica for a month and I want be portable. Gonna try to install it on #SteamDeck and use the same account and character.
Am I alone in feeling a sudden despair at the state of the world? Is this malaise just an #africa thing? or just #southafrica? Maybe it’s a #joburg thing? Maybe it’s just a Mabhengwane thing? I look at the way things are headed and it’s like staring into an abyss of dread. The world is on fire, and here I am trying to prepare a Grade 12 student for their #isiZulu exam.
Three Meshtastic nodes are active in Cape Town for off-grid communications during disasters or just to meet your neighbours
Myself and two other ham radio operators have established 3 Meshtastic nodes that will operate 24/7 to help build out more connectivity across Cape Town.
We are using license-free 868 MHz radios, so anyone can buy these cheap (ish) devices and ge ...continues
#theguardian / The ghost of apartheid has come back to haunt Israel and give hope to Palestinians
The parallel between the treatment of Palestinians by Israel and the apartheid regime in South Africa: a systematic campaign of oppression, dispossession, and violence against marginalized groups, language used to justify these systems and the ways in which they have been perpetuated over time. An international action is needed to address these issues and prevent further human rights abuses.
[…] Even as a teenage Zionist of the left in South Africa – before the illusions of that identity collapsed under the weight of their absurdity and I found my way into the ANC – my anti-apartheid inclinations made me especially uncomfortable that Israel was the apartheid regime’s closest ally. Many of us were appalled in 1976 when Israel hosted South African prime minister John Vorster, an avowed Nazi imprisoned during the second world war for his work in a paramilitary sabotage organisation linked to Hitler’s abwehr, his military-intelligence service. Even more so, later, when it turned out that Israel was negotiating arms deals with South Africa, which violated the UN arms embargo, and even cooperated on nuclear-weapons development.
Yesterday #Canada’s foremost genocide expert in International Law came out and gave the opinion #SouthAfrica would be successful in their application to the ICJ against Israel, today: #cdnpoli
After days of confusion, Trudeau government says it will abide by ICJ on genocide case against Israel:
Linux Desktop Operating System Market Share in South Africa has more than Doubled this last Year
I still don’t place a lot of faith in stats around Linux desktop OS market share from web browser visits (because mine, for example, are “Other” and on a VPN that exits outside of SA, and our Linux computers in the home are behind one public IP address that c ...continues
Wonder why @capeunionmart#Kway#veldskoen are made in India when we have excellent locally made and branded #SouthAfrica#veldskoen which we export to many countries? Local ones are made better too.
Impressed that there is a Bot now auto-posting City of #CapeTown alerts that were normally only on X. Wonder if it is active for other municipalities in #SouthAfrica - good to see more of these types of services appearing in the Fediverse.
a good reason to no longer shop at @'home #SouthAfrica - items now bearing #RFID Tags and I wonder what data is transmitted and stolen through this 'feature' - it gives me the creeps to say the least. Can anyone shed some light if and what data can be transmitted? Location Data through Smartphone's / Home Router's BLE? Tracking shoppers through a Mall? Profiling? #privacy#masssurveillance#tracking
The South African Post Office is failing — these are the best alternatives
I’m going to bookmark these for myself so long as most of my incoming deliveries via SAPO have been dramatically delayed, and one even had the item inside stolen (and replaced with a metal weight).
It is better for your sanity often to pay more to a 3rd pa ...continues
Sounds to me like the minibus taxi industry needs serious regulation as drivers are being unfairly treated in contravention of labour laws. This is what causes all the problems in the roads in #SouthAfrica. Seems to be below minimum wages with zero benefits. In today's Business Day newspaper.
Another bank in #SouthAfrica now saying they will no longer e-mail bank statements monthly (they were encrypted PDF documents). They expect customers to remember to log in monthly to go download their statements from the website. What happens when this is 10+ service providers doing this? How do you remember every month, else you pay to access the docs if older than 3 months.
Wondering if this is legally acceptable? Surely they must 'send' statements?
South African fibre veterans launch United States expansion plan: Finding a niche not filled by US fiber providers
It’s interesting that in many areas, the US lags behind South Africa in terms of fibre roll-out, because their copper infrastructure is not being stolen like in SA.
The article goes on though to highlight two other key reasons why this venture could be suc ...continues
I'm seeing a lot of sources mischaracterizing what happened in the #ICJ (International Court of Justice) with regard to the state of #Israel and its actions in #Gaza.
While the court did not, unfortunately, order an immediate #ceasefire, neither did it give the state of Israel a green light to continue its current policies.
Read on in this thread for more discussion on the six specific orders...
