People sleeping on the ground outside. Their humble housing lost, their crops destroyed, the road to school gone, their animals dead. Fear. Desperation.
This is the aftermath of #Otis for the affected poor communities outside of the urban #acapulco , „the other Acapulco“.
Climate injustice meets and amplifies social injustice.
My daughter-in-law updated us on her family in #Acapulco. Her grandmother is safe. Her uncle’s first floor is flooded, but they are okay. Her aunt’s home is completely submerged. The family is on their rooftop & on a waiting list to be rescued. It’s like Katrina, but no one is paying attention.
Update - Maria’s uncle got his sister’s family off their roof. Entire family (Grandma, Uncle’s family, Aunt’s family) now staying at uncle’s house (with destroyed first floor). They’ve lost everything & can’t even buy basics in #Alcapulco. Brother in Cabo is on his way with truckload of supplies.
This is another Katrina. It’s bad & getting worse. Our extended family is okay b/c they have family throughout Mexico & US. Others do not. Please pay attention to what’s happening. #Hurricane#Otis
"One would think that an unprecedented category-five windstorm that flattened a resort city of one million people on Mexico’s Pacific coast might be mentioned at least below the fold of mainstream media cable and print outlets. In general, it has not."
Aid is still only trickling in to Acapulco 4 days after it was smashed by level 5 hurricane #Otis.
The death count is up to 39 and expected to rise significantly higher. It is estimated 200,000 homes are damaged from the storm. #NoOneIsSafe#NowhereIsSafe
It's estimated that there are more than 100 deaths due to the passage of #Hurricane#Otis in #acapulco including fishermen, boatmen, sailors and people buried by landslides in their homes in the most vulnerable neighborhoods of the #Guerrero municipality.
@JulianOliver And the photo doesn’t show the impact on the general population, which is poor even by Mexican standards (another reminder that wealth doesn’t trickle down). Image from the FT daily climate graphic.#Otis

Otis teaches a terrifying lesson in rapid #hurricane intensification
"#HurricaneOtis struck very near #Acapulco, Mexico, on Tuesday night as a monster 165 mile-per-hour category 5 cyclone. On Monday night, about 24-hours before landfall, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) was predicting it would do so as 70 mile-per-hour tropical storm" #Otis

"The Mexican government has insisted that only 27 people have died in Acapulco. Today we watched rescue crews pull bodies out of the water. One of the security officials on scene told us they recovered 50 bodies today."
