Crimson-speckled flunkey (Utetheisa pulchella) crimson-speckled footman, or crimson-speckled moth. Birds don’t like them as the caterpillars accumulate a large amount of alkaloids, toxic & unpalatable to birds. Which probably accounts for the colors, a warning sign. #moth#insects#biology#photo#nature#wildlife#science#ecology
From yesterday’s walk the biggest moth EVER! Ok the biggest moth in Europe maybe…the giant peacock moth. Difficult to get a clear photo without disturbing it - hand in one photo for scale!
Went out to feed the birds this a.m. & saw something "mounted" to a back porch support beam. Closer inspection revealed it was a very large #moth. My ID app suggests Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) with an average wingspan of 6". It was just chilling during the a.m. storms. I hoped it would open up but it just stayed motionless. It was quite dark so the pics aren't the best. Antennae are very cool!

I was not prepared for how cute Hummingbird (Sphinx) Moths are.
She was sunning on the door, came back out to her in a deathmatch with a Towhee, so drove the bird off, got her into my hand, got her some heat then into cover, etc.
(she hadn't lost any bits, looked like I got there before injuries)
I don’t know if I’ve seen one of these before, but I think it’s a mint #moth. Its wings look as though they have been embroidered. #allotment#gardening
Here's a cute caterpillar doing its best to disrupt your feed. This is the Shag Carpet Caterpillar Moth (Prothysana sp.). As an adult, it is sorta a drab triangular brown thing, but as a larva, I find it resplendent. Its larval scales are way cooler than the adult ones.
A moth rises like a phoenix from the dead. An #iNaturalist observation of a species thought possibly to be extinct. That is until a tourist on Stewart Island got his uv light out for an evening & observed it. #nz#moth enthusiasts are beside themselves with joy. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/202565126
