For years I taught #internationalrelations to undergraduates & would warn against uni-causal approaches to understanding #conflict... and I still would be doing so if I'd not retired.
But, I do think Simon Tisdall has a point about the corrosive impact of 'angry old men' on the conduct of global #politics... this is certainly not the only factor at play, but nowadays I might give it more credence (and weight) than I've done in the past...
'Until recently, information about Member State delegations from 1946 to 1994 could only be found in print copies of the Blue Book....
But now, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library has digitized 276 volumes of the Blue Book covering the period from 1946 to 1994. From this year onward, the Blue Book was published in digital format.'
"A group of researchers from Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have created a dataset called “corpus of resolutions” that contains all resolutions, drafts, and meeting records of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, an international body that aims to ensure global peace and security."

Plenty of boring ways to explain my research topic & why it motivates me to get out of bed every morning. Here’s a more interesting way though, thanks to Tami Amanda Jacoby (2015): “the construction of grievance-based identity is a fundamentally contested process as the lines between victim and perpetrator are blurred by ongoing cycles of belligerence and retribution”.
I wasn’t expecting to agree with so much of this. While there are a few major assumptions (typical “what Putin wants” rhetoric), the rest is surprisingly spot-on analysis on why the “rest of the world,” tiring of US hegemony, want to be just “the world.”
Why did it take so long for the Foreign Minister to actually speak with UNRWA.
Why are we making National decisions without evidence.
Why were the ‘ECAJ’ even approached for comment on a matter unrelated to Jewish livelihood in Australia.

Turkey and Greece open 'new, calmer chapter' in tumultuous relationship.
The Turkish president, visiting Athens for the first time in seven years, signed a 'declaration of friendship and good-neighborly relations' with the Greek prime minister, testifying to their desire to ease the heightened tensions of recent years.

This takes priority over 'justice':
The innocent people still alive today that are at immediate risk takes priority over those who are already dead.
India reportedly to expel 41 Canadian diplomats; Justin Trudeau says relations are ‘extremely difficult’
The Canadian government admitted relations with India are at “an extremely difficult” juncture as India reportedly ordered the expulsions of another 41 Canadian diplomats
Having a degree in #internationalrelations didn't land me a proper job in the field so far, but I can now argue on the internet more efficiently about the latest pressing #global#geopolitical with some strangers. I see it as an absolute win! 💯💯
