Having a degree in #internationalrelations didn't land me a proper job in the field so far, but I can now argue on the internet more efficiently about the latest pressing #global #geopolitical with some strangers. I see it as an absolute win! 💯💯

It just occurred to me that the reason there is never peace in the Middle East is because both Israel and its Western allies think for some reason that retaliating against a retaliation is not escalatory*.

'Until recently, information about Member State delegations from 1946 to 1994 could only be found in print copies of the Blue Book....

But now, the Dag Hammarskjöld Library has digitized 276 volumes of the Blue Book covering the period from 1946 to 1994. From this year onward, the Blue Book was published in digital format.'

Why did it take so long for the Foreign Minister to actually speak with UNRWA.
Why are we making National decisions without evidence.
Why were the ‘ECAJ’ even approached for comment on a matter unrelated to Jewish livelihood in Australia.
What aren’t international human rights and health organisations approached for comment.

ABC approach to reporting on Israel-Gaza really is … off.

#Introduction toot! Hi folks. My old server went down without notice so here I am, starting fresh on aus.social! Fingers crossed it’s stable.

My name’s Robbie and I’m a Master of #Criminology student at Melbourne’s Deakin University. My research interests include #cybercrime, #cyberfraud, #victimisation, and #digitaldeviance so expect related toots. I also hold an MA in #InternationalRelations so might post about that from time to time as well.

Expect pics from my dog. He loves the attention.

Have a great day!

Turkey and Greece open 'new, calmer chapter' in tumultuous relationship.

The Turkish president, visiting Athens for the first time in seven years, signed a 'declaration of friendship and good-neighborly relations' with the Greek prime minister, testifying to their desire to ease the heightened tensions of recent years.

The European Network's Ken Sweeney argues that, despite 15,000 deaths at the hands of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF), the world is behaving like rabbits in headlight and needs to call Israeli actions what they are.

The world should force them to accept peace and reconciliation.

Australia overstepping with its 'ideal' cease fire resolution.

It's meant to be a humanitarian cease fire: a cease fire to enable humanitarian activities to take place, and open opportunities for further discussion about a more enduring ceasefire.

This takes priority over 'justice':
The innocent people still alive today that are at immediate risk takes priority over those who are already dead.

Justice can always wait. Preventing further injustices takes priority over chasing offences that have already happened.

For years I taught #internationalrelations to undergraduates & would warn against uni-causal approaches to understanding #conflict... and I still would be doing so if I'd not retired.

But, I do think Simon Tisdall has a point about the corrosive impact of 'angry old men' on the conduct of global #politics... this is certainly not the only factor at play, but nowadays I might give it more credence (and weight) than I've done in the past...

This long read on #NeoIdealism is fascinating, in Byline Supplement to @bylinetimes

Benjamin Tallis, of the German Council of Foreign Relations, argues that Neo-Idealism in the context of #InternationalRelations is

"a definitive break with Liberal Internationalism’s sometimes facile reading of the ‘end of history’ – relying on the ‘convergence wager’ in which the spread of liberal economics would inevitably seed liberal politics ..."
