The evidence that covid can dysregulate the immune system is — at this point — extensive, though not well-publicized. A close eye on covid-related subreddits will reveal — with surprising frequency — posts asking about, or describing, anecdotal experiences with this. Here are over a dozen:
Scientists have identified cells in the brainstem that sense immune cues from the periphery of the body and act as master regulators of the body’s inflammatory response, a finding that could lead to treatments for autoimmune diseases and other conditions caused by an excessive immune response.
Authors of the paper that demonstrated immune dysregulation at least 8 months following mild-to-moderate SARSCoV2 infection have published a followup study demonstrating improvements after 2 years, controlling for reinfection (who wants to bet masks were an integral part of that):
This study shows that Individual neurons coordinate to produce rhythmic waves that propel fluid through dense brain tissue, aiding the removal of debris from the brain. Understanding the process can help in neurodegenerative diseases.
"A very problematic study for immunity debt grifters. Babies born during lockdown had healthier microbiomes because they WEREN'T exposed to pathogens, meaning they required fewer antibiotics (17% compared to 80% for normal times babies) and subsequently developed fewer allergies" - @nateb_panic
Physician & Microbiologist Albert Sabin died #OTD in 1993.
With the menace of polio growing, Sabin & other researchers sought a vaccine to prevent or mitigate the illness. This was complicated because there were multiple strains of the disease. Salk developed an inactivated poliovirus vaccine, a "dead" vaccine given by injection. Sabin developed an oral vaccine based on mutant strains of polio virus that seemed to stimulate antibody production but not to cause paralysis.
Turns out you can vote multiple times! It's not clear to me when the reset happens, but go spam that vote button!! (Please)
Context:
I've submitted a video, championing the Open Medicine Foundation. If you can vote for ours we could stand to direct a big chunk of money towards CFS research.
As a group leader, you'll be recruiting through our competitive #PhD Program, shared with other institutes at the The Vienna BioCenter: https://training.vbc.ac.at/phd-program/
English physician and scientist Edward Jenner died #OTD in 1823.
The terms vaccine and vaccination are derived from Variolae vaccinae, the term devised by Jenner to denote cowpox. He used it in 1798 in the title of his Inquiry into the Variolae vaccinae known as the Cow Pox, in which he described the protective effect of cowpox against smallpox. In the West, Jenner is often called "the father of immunology", & his work is said to have saved "more lives than any other man".
How COVID-19 Vaccines and Infections Are Tweaking Our Immunity
'our immune system may be getting smarter every time you encounter COVID-19, a new study suggests. After getting vaccinated and infected, the immune system generates broader defenses against the virus, including against new variants'
Register now for the Spring meeting organized by the The Dutch Society for IMMUNOLOGY, March 21-22, 2024. Awesome two-day program covering all (most) topics in immunology.
Remember kids, just because someone has an MD after their name it doesn't mean they have expertise in what they are promoting. (Appeal to authority informal fallacy)
American microbiologist Rebecca Lancefield was born #OTD in 1895.
She is best known for her serological classification of β-hemolytic streptococcal bacteria, Lancefield grouping, which is based on the carbohydrate composition of bacterial antigens found on their cell walls. She is also responsible for the serological typing of Group A Streptococci. Her work laid the foundation for subsequent studies of the epidemiology, immunology, and pathogenesis of streptococcal infections.
