Behold a bunch of hairy curtain crust growing on a dead log. This fungus is pretty common on the Peninsula south of San Francisco during rainy season. #Fungus#NaturePhotography
There are so many delightful names for some #fungi that it's hard to pick a favorite. These fairy fans I photographed in Interior Alaska rate high on my list. #FungiFriday#fungus
Bird's nest #fungus on a rotting stick, 9 October 2021, Petersham, #Massachusetts. These are around 1/4 inch in diameter. I first encountered the Nidulariaceae (from the Latin "nidulus" for "small nest") around a year or so ago and they never cease to amaze me.
The year began with exciting chaos. I released a moss sticker collection that so many people loved and ordered. Thank you, #mastodon people. Additionally, I got married, and we used our leave to fulfill all orders as a newlywed team, making for a unique and remarkable honeymoon.
@maggiejk#Honey is often considered #antibiotic by many, but it contains energy. One thing we've learned about life from studying extremophiles is, if there is energy, life will find a way to exploit it. Another thing is honey doesn't kill all #bacteria and #fungus. Some can tolerate it, and just go dormant. There are many bacteria that are harder to kill when dormant. Simple boiling won't work. I would not be surprised to find out there are #fungi with similar abilities. Life finds a way!!!
A few pics from a hike at Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park in Oakland, California.
I don’t know a lot about #fungi but these are my best guesses. Corrections are welcome!

The last week has been crazy. You guys here at #mastodon were so kind by ordering the sticker collection "Moss covering objects of our time", as well as all the other sticker sets. This week I took four bags to the post office, I usually take one. Thank you so much!
Good morning fellow Mastos and hello to Tuesday. It's chilly again and we had a sprinkling of snow yesterday, for all of about 5 minutes! I think the bin collections are back to normal now, so I'll have to determine if it's the green or black bin that goes out today. Decisions, decisions!
Have a great Tuesday everyone.
Today's random photo is a puffball #fungus that I found in Otley back in July last year. This one was almost perfect but the bugs had started eating it.
In the last days of 2023 I launched the sticker collection "Moss covering objects of our time" and shared it only here on #mastodon. I couldn't have chosen better. The reactions and orders I received gave me energy that will last throughout 2024. Thank you for that.
Seeing these little springtails browsing on a jelly fungus made me happy. They're such funny little muppets! Tiny cattle grazing in their tiny hanging valley.
Found this Dyer’s Polypore #fungus on a recent walk in the redwood #forest. They make lovely natural dyes for fabric plus they help downed wood decompose.
