President #Biden on Monday evening signed a bipartisan bill prohibiting Russian imports of enriched #uranium a move intended to cut off one of the last significant flows of #money from the #UnitedStates to #Russia amid the #war in #Ukraine.

American companies pay roughly $1B a year for enriched uranium, the main fuel used by #nuclear reactors, from #Russia.
#Congress took swift action to ban Russian oil & gas imports a month after the Feb 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The bill also frees up $2.7B…in previous #legislation to build out the domestic #uranium processing industry.

“This new #law reestablishes America’s leadership in the nuclear sector,” #NationalSecurity adv Jake Sullivan said in a stmnt Mon. “It will help secure our #energy sector for generations to come.” The bill passed the #House in Dec, but stalled for months in the #Senate, where Sen #TedCruz had blocked the measure over unrelated disputes.

Coconut water is a fantastic summer drink for several reasons. It's incredibly hydrating, packed with electrolytes like potassium, and low in calories, making it perfect for replenishing fluids lost through sweating in the summer heat 🥥

Cool map app where you can see the energy usage in real time for many countries in (mostly) western world.

You have both the share sustainable production that is being used right now and where the electricity is sold to or bought from.

In some ways the green transition is already happening: it now looks like last year the world overall managed to supply around 30% of electricity through renewable energy (primarily wind & solar).

And solar continues to be the fastest growing renewable energy source, now (for the second year) being the most used source across the world.

This does offer some hope that (albeit late in the day) we are seeing a shift in energy generation!

We keep under-estimating how fast renewable energy grows.

And we keep over-estimating how much fossil fuel is being used in the future.

Thanks RethinkX for these graphs!

To actually accomplish a green transition we (the world) needs to spend around $9 trillion a year.... well that's just not affordable, say climate sceptics.

You might say that, but lets have a look at the money we were prepared to pony up to deal with the pandemic.

While a more focused threat & certainly causing some fiscal issues, when required the money can be found.

(Don't get me started on fossil fuels subsidies!)

So its not the money stopping the green transition!
