Question while I sit here trapped under a cat: Any favorite egg cookbooks? I give most of my hens’ eggs away. Hardly use them at all because my kids are completely unthrilled by another round of scrambled eggs for dinner. Halp?
No cute bunnies or lambs in my files, I'm afraid. I do, however, have a lot of queer chickens. This is a painting of a hen-cock (c. 1900), a prize fighter, by English artist Herbert Atkinson. 🥚🐥🐔
Went to pick up something from a farmer in my state. I got there and there was a big German Shepherd, who was an absolute doll, and a herd of cats and chickens that the shepherd would not approach. It was adorable. Many scruffs were given :-)
Fantastic weather all of a sudden. #Schwiemu requested a new compost bin, so I found a spot, moved the old bunny box out of the way (the hardest part of this project so far) and went to work.
Bonus challenge: Make a double compost bin using only this stack of sawmill junk that's been sitting there for years.
True story: one day a couple of years ago, I went into my garden in the morning and discovered I had become the proud wrangler of some chickens... then my neighbour arrived with a story about a broken fence and an escape plan...
But aren't they beautiful? #chooks#chickens
I forgot to clear a path through to the “woods” for dog's early morning bathroom break. Two foot dog surrounded by three foot walls of snow bordering the driveway.
Used to be I’d snow blow a path around perimeter of backyard, first for our previous dog, then the new dog and the chickens. Now we're down to one chicken and the 15yr old dog isn’t up for extended adventures. #DogsOfMastodon#chickens#snow

I am doing more stonework in the garden, getting ready for the big show in June. About 6 or 7 years ago I made this bed and I used these logs (leftovers from a sculpture project) as edging g because i couldn't afford the stone at the time. Well they're rotting away now. Last weekend I did the corner in the foreground. Today I need to replace the long logs on the left of the photo.

So I pulled out the logs to replace them with ledge stone. Eventually I might do a nurse log garden with some ferns and some red huckleberry planted on it (the underside is very spongy) but I won't have time for that before the show. So for now they're going in the chicken yard. Daisy here, the matriarch of our flock, has already claimed this one for her own. I might not get it back.

Stonework thread part 3: here's a photo of the mostly-complete edging wall that replaced the logs. It looks a lot more unified and finished. Not bad for an afternoon's work. To see my previous stone project from last week, click here: https://mstdn.social/@eugeneparnell/112035452418065864
Here's a free idea for any #news#journalist who would like to do all the hard work to run it down:
There is, today, right now, a very effective #vaccine for #chickens against avian flu. It's been used for many years in Mexico and China and a few other places, to great effect.
But Canada and Europe and USA are all out of luck -- they can't buy it and they can't use it. Instead they just kill off whole flocks of hundreds of thousands.
