Beautiful pink form of Thelymitra alpina (Highland sun orchid) near Square Rock, Namadgi NP, ACT. Most plants at this location had the more typical blue flowers this year -this was the only pink form I saw on my last visit to the mountains.
Musky Cap (Caladenia moschata) at 1200m in Namadgi NP, ACT. Montane forms of this widespread species can flower right through to mid/late December in mild seasons - well after flowering has finished in populations at lower altitudes around Canberra.
Attendees learned #Python and #Django skills, enabling them to build a dynamic website.
Special thanks go to #volunteer organisers Elena Williams and Alex Ware who co-ordinated the event, and to many volunteer tutors. Your efforts are greatly appreciated 🐍 🎉

I had the good fortune today to visit the National #Bushfire Behaviour Research Laboratory at #CSIRO Black Mountain, #Canberra.
Watched an experiment in the Pyrotron - only one of two combustion wind tunnels in the world for conducting controlled experiments on bushfire conditions like fuel load, humidity and wind speed. This data goes into bushfire models to plan emergency management responses.
This particular experiment was testing how much water is required to extinguish the fire front. The total amount of water is surprisingly low (like 100 ml), but it needs to well aimed and timed...

We like critical thinkers who enjoy diving into health and social services policy. People, professional respect, and trust are important to us - it's how we've built a strong team culture, and how we work with our community and with public service.
Must be OK with me talking about radical love.
Ability to talk me out of getting myself arrested in civil disobedience actions is a bonus.
Hello. My favourite season has arrived and I'm looking forward to Canberra looking magnificent in full autumn splendour. And with luck, a few new photos to share.
Here's a favourite from the tail end of autumn last year.
TUX
Tux is the penguin that Linux uses as a logo. In 1993, Linus Torvald went to #Australia and got bitten by a penguin in a #Canberra zoo. In 1996, Alan Cox made a cartoon design of a penguin that Torvalds found online.
The name #TUX has been coined by James Hughes, and it is the contraction of "Torvald's UniX"... Weird, as you know, #Linux Is Not UniX :D

Black Mountain (ACT) orchids - Dusky Fingers, Waxlips and Brown Caps out in one spot, but not much out at all in others (although I only had a quick look!) Canberra has had pretty much exactly the average rainfall for this calendar year so far - but local bush land and forests still felt a little drier than most really good orchid seasons. Might have to wait until the montane species start to flower later in spring / early summer now to put a lot of time into looking for Canberra orchids.
Late Leopard Orchid (Diuris semilunulata) near Square Rock, Namadgi NP, ACT. Another orchid out a little earlier than usual in the mountains this year - grows alongside Diuris sulphurea in places (with some possible hybrids of the two).
ACT Wildlife is replacing soon-to-be-illegal fruit nets with the legal ones. Take them your old ones and they will replace them.
They have also Failed Their Advertising. The only reason I know about this is that my sister and mother dragged me out there with their carload of old nets a couple of weekends ago.
My work is doing the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle at the Tuggeranong Bunnings tomorrow (Friday), with the money going towards the #Canberra Rape Crisis Centre, so come along if you want to support a good cause.
Large mountain greenhoods (Pterostylis monticola) near Corin, ACT. Extensive colonies of these impressive summer-flowering orchids can be seen in the mountains behind #Canberra in good seasons - usually at 600-1200m altitude (also NSW + VIC).
Summer greenhoods (Pterostylis decurva) near Corin, ACT. Fairly widespread summer-flowering greenhood usually found above 800m altitude in ACT/NSW (also VIC + TAS). Can grow in large colonies but I've only ever seen scattered plants at this location.
