This is a response to the Canberra Times' weekly readers poll from the previous week.
The response suggest that if public transport was free, more people would be using it. But this is in contrast to the reasons people give for not using public transport. It is also worth noting that public transport is cheaper than private car ownership.
There's been a predictably ill-informed and disingenuous chorus of pearl-clutching about the decriminalisation of drug possession (small amounts) in the ACT which comes into force this weekend.
This is one of the stupidest I've seen:
"Business owners [are] asking 'what's going to happen if someone who is under the influence of drugs comes into my premises? And what rights do I have to protect my staff and my business place if this happens'," Ms Lee said."
Of course, business owners will have exactly the same rights to refuse entry and the same responsibilities to refuse service as they do now.
TUX
Tux is the penguin that Linux uses as a logo. In 1993, Linus Torvald went to #Australia and got bitten by a penguin in a #Canberra zoo. In 1996, Alan Cox made a cartoon design of a penguin that Torvalds found online.
The name #TUX has been coined by James Hughes, and it is the contraction of "Torvald's UniX"... Weird, as you know, #Linux Is Not UniX :D

“Period products will be provided in an increasing number of locations over the coming months and years.
“We welcome expressions of interest from community organisations interested in becoming a location where free period products and information will be available in the future.”
"It is clear that the predominant reason for low charge rates in the ACT is a failure to properly and appropriately investigate sexual offences," the report said.
The ACT needs to finally ditch the systemically incompetent AFP and create its own fit-for-purpose police service.
Fancypants cocktail party tonight for a friend's 60th. Not really my thing but anyhooo... we are hurling clothes around the house in an attempt to find suitable outfits.
Meanwhile....
Have you been to Dirty Jane's??! Crikey.. wharehouse of retro delights. Found a cute little silver and bakelite paté knife for the birthday girl. #Canberra#recycle
It’s good to be old, even elderly. But it’s downright dangerous to be inattentive and driving a car, sailing through a light that had been red for some time and a walk signal that had been green for about 5 seconds. No change in speed. I pointed straight at the driver as they passed but they didn’t notice that either. #activeTravel#Canberra
Ok I just did a search for recumbents in #Canberra to look at refurbishing or possibly replacing my decrepit #greenspeed GT5, because starting to ride regularly again would probably be a useful part of #PostStrokeRecovery. Does anyone have any experience with this mob: https://recumbent.net.au/
I took this image last December, with the house surrounded by fencing and next to a block that had already been cleared.
The house is gone now. It didn't quite make it to 100 years....
Righteo, pool party at 5pm has been delayed until this storm is over. Not complaining, love the rain. I have the famous artichoke packed, ready for the oven. So lucky to have generous friends who like to share their pool. #Canberra
I just finished this book as part of a local history binge. Marion Mahony Griffin was a remarkable woman, arguably decades ahead of her time. A gifted visual artist and a seriously capable architect in her own right, she was denied, and did not seek the recognition she deserved.
She played a key role in the careers of both Frank Lloyd Wright and later her husband Walter Burley Griffin, including doing a lot (probably most) of the work for 'his' winning entry in the National Capital design contest.
She led a fascinating, unconventional life which makes for a captivating read.
As someone who's being doing a lot of reading about the early history of #Canberra particularly since it was selected as the national capital, I find it fascinating to watch a similar process happening not too far away in real time
Great to see this letter from our Deputy Convenor Matt in the Canberra Times the other day. Local shops are an essential amenity for so many Canberrans - allowing more housing nearby just makes sense. #canberra
