Ladies, I have a horny man-god for you! Wait, "horned", a horned man-God - Gelas, from Sicily! Phew, that could have got awkward! (Ok @AimeeMaroux I know you can still do something inappropriate with Gelas!) This Æ Tetras harks all the way back to 420 - 405 BC, it amazes me that it is possible to hold something so old in your hands! Did you know that the Romans' favourite went ?

Besides honey & grape juice, meals in were flavoured with imported dates from Judea ().

Date palm fronds were symbolic of - lawyers pinned them to their doors & generals wore special "toga palmata".

Judean dates were also shelf-stable & delicious.

Sadly, by the 19th c., they had vanished.

Except for a few 2000-year-old seeds.

They were successfully germinated in 2020.

Did you know that many a noble died in #Ancient #China due to #magical mishaps?

In old China, #immortality was greatly desired. It was believed that #minerals could transfer their powers to those worthy.

Cinnabar & mercury were the original elixirs, while gold was also used by #alchemists.

#Deadly side-effects were recorded from the 3rd c. onwards. And yet, it wasn’t until the 18th c. that consumption ceased.

The last Emperor to die of Alchemical Poisoning was Yongzeng, of Qing in 1735.

It's Arthur Conan Doyle's birthday & a keen detective may wonder where all my 500+ posts went!

My old server is shutting down. You can see my old posts here:

I started back then with this post:

"Did you know that to be considered wealthy in #Ancient #Rome, you had to have a minimum of 1500 roof tiles?

That sort of knowledge is what I can offer you, dear Mastodon world.

Pleased to me you!"

Did you know that the Phoenician had a democratic system some 500 years prior to #ancient #Athens?

In 1100 BC, an #Egyptian trader travelled to Byblos in #Phoenicia. Before he could leave, he was ambushed by pirates.

The Phoenician prince was called to negotiate & he called on "the assembly", a subset of citizens. They decided the trader's fate.

Thus, at least a partial #democracy was already there & may have influenced the Athenians.

Did you know that there were artificially mummified bodies ~2k yrs before #Ancient #Egypt?

In Northern #Chile, the Chinchorro people started mummifying their weakest: Children, babies, & the elderly.

Occuring after 5000 BCE, corpses were stripped of flesh & filled with fibre & clay.

These are the oldest examples of deliberate mummification.

That they mummified irrespective of social status is wholly unique.

PS: The Chinchorro #diet was 90% #seafood.

A rare polissoir, a stone used by Neolithic people to sharpen and polish stone axe heads 5,000 years ago, has been discovered in the Valley of Stones National Nature Reserve in Dorset. It is only the second polissoir found undisturbed in situ, known as an “earthfast” stone, in England.
