scy, Hm. Is there a #CLI #Markdown renderer that can do "display foo.md beautifully in the terminal, and highlight whatever source line 123 contained (which is almost certainly not output line 123)"?
I have a collection of Markdown documents and would like to run full-text search on them, e.g. using #ripgrep, but I don't want the results to be displayed as raw Markdown, but instead be rendered in the terminal, but still see where the result is. Any ideas?
aral, 🎉 New Kitten feature: Markdown pages
You can now create .page.md files and use front matter to specify a layout template as well as any other props you want to pass to your layout.
(I’m working on the Kitten web site with docs, etc., so I thought I’d bite the bullet and add this feature this morning to make my life easier. Should make it easier to make this sort of site with Kitten in the future for everyone.)

jaapio, Dutch I'm investigating options that are available to create a table of contents in #markdown, really wondering what people are using to create that when writing markdown based docs.
Please boost for reach.
jaapio, Dutch @dantleech that means that you do not have any influence on the order of the chapters? And all headers are included? Or can you specify the maximum level?
I do completely understand that you prefer RST as it is much more powerful and easier to extend with custom syntax. The reason why I'm looking for a way to build a TOC is because @phpdoc users do request for it.
dantleech, @jaapio @phpdoc depends. You can have per article TOC, or you can ... iterate over a set of pages, order them by whatever (anything in the front matter e.g. weight) and (probably) pull the header structure from them. It's essentially the save as the navigation.
I found that you can pretty much do anything in Hugo, it's just way less elegant than RST/Sphinx!

brome, @Aznorth Friendica ?
hund, Can anyone recommend me a good Markdown editor? I can't seem to find anything that's based on some web engine, which tends to use its own font rendering.
mike, @hund Heh, well since I wear glasses pretty much full time, I guess you have your answer! 😏
I used to have a multimonitor setup so I could keep more than one thing on the screen at a time. I replaced two smaller monitors with one bigger one. Plus, good for gaming.
hund, @mike Okey. :D I bet it's fun to play games on it!
I used to have a triple monitor setup, but I found it to be way too distracting for me and what I do at the computer.
I would like to have a 27" 5k monitor, but they're as common as unicorns..
(5k on a 27" means no fractional scaling)
publicvoit, I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like #Obsidian that are using open formats like #Markdown for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.
I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.
Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.
Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇
gisiger, @publicvoit I don't think, that Markdown per se is a lock-in factor. Ideally, every tool would save everything as flat text files. That would truly be open, imho.
Ages ago, I was using a simple, text file based local wiki. Things got complicated ever since.
Btw, are you familiar with #obtf?
gisiger, @publicvoit I see, yes Obsidian is guilty here. I think. I'm a Joplin user myself.
Yes, OBTF is exactly that, evberything in one single text file: https://www.williamhern.com/living-in-a-single-text-file.html
And this guy, but he's about to do lists. I myself use todo.txt in a single text file for that:
https://jeffhuang.com/productivity_text_file/I came across OBTF lately by reading this one:

hut, What do you think about my project #panban?
https://codeberg.org/hut/panban
It's a #kanban board for all kinds of data backends (hence the "pan").
Looks a bit like #ranger, but for multi-column todo lists.
You can currently use it for #CalDav TODO entries, #markdown lists, #todotxt files, and a read-only view on GitHub issues.
It's great in combo with #TasksOrg [https://tasks.org].
Been using it a lot over the last 5 years, tho it's still experimental. Thinking of rewriting in #rust.
hut, @AAMfP Marco, may I ask what software you use for kanban?
AAMfP, @hut
Sure.
I usually use my #FreeSoftware @libreoffice Calc spreadsheet https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/aamfpAnd also the tool I made with some friends: http://kanbanone.com we evem have five paying users!
And I'm actually even experimenting with paper: https://marcoxbresciani.codeberg.page/kaizen/kanban-journal.html
But mostly the spreadsheet.
jwildeboer, 4 new blog posts in April. Seems I'm getting better at sharing my long(er) form thoughts :)
The workflow I now have makes it really easy too. When I have a thread here that I think deserves a blog post, I copy the link to the first toot and paste it in https://mtr.wildeboer.net where I can get a #markdown dump that I can copy/paste in my editor and work on. My blog is #jekyll based and also uses Markdown, so it is easy to do :)

Sweetshark, @jwildeboer Last time I asked, they did not say 'a bit of CC-NC is fine' ... which doenst mean it might (currently) be tolerated.
As long as that is true, I wont go through the hassle to move there exclusively. I should look into cohosting though, so that moving is easier should a untolerable #enshittification of github pages happen.
haploc, @jwildeboer similar but with Hugo and Gitlab CI instead.
Edent, 🆕 blog! “WordPress GeSHi Highlighting for Markdown”
I've launched a WordPress Plugin for an extremely niche use-case. WP GeSHi Highlight Redux works with WordPress's Classic Editor to convert Markdown to syntax highlighted code. That allows me to write:
php $a = "Hello"; $b = 5 * 2; echo $a . str($b);
And have it displayed as: $a = "Hello"; $b = […]👀 Read more: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/05/wordpress-geshi-highlighting-for-markdown/

herndlm, I was recently forced to create redundant #Confluence docs and since I hate Confluence, I started looking for a tool that allows me to just write Markdown in versioned files and generate the docs in Confluence.

fipaddict, French Tant que vous êtes à discuter du #Markdown. Certain·nes d'entre vous savent si, un jour, celui ci sera supporté sur Mastodon en client web ?

weilawei, Me, about to go on a rant about how everyone has missed the -entire- point of Markdown:
it's not markup.
Me, predicting future complaints:
"Your markdown doesn't render right for me."
"Oh you need to have FlibbertyGizbits plugin and TableWax extension and and and..."
Missing. The. Entire. Point.
It's not that there shouldn't be something like that for layout and formatting--there's a demand. Call it something else to avoid creating a dependency issue.
