Wow. I did not have #SORBS shutting down on my list of things to expect this week:

https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/07/sorbs_closed/

They’ve been around for almost half my life.

Bet the spammers are gonna be happy.

Did I already mention that I do find it very sad that inline quoting with interleaved style is not a thing in typical business #email environments? 😔

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_style#Interleaved_style

My guess: mainly mostly because #Outlook is bad at it and most people have never learned about it either.

Current status: cup of tea in the garden. Reading a 2007 book I bought in 2012, about some software first released in 1995 handling a 1981 protocol that I'm going to use as the cornerstone of my teeny tiny SaaS in 2024.

May we all have such a long-term effect on the world!

lkh,

@yeti I think I could set up the VPS to allow anonymous UUCP. Not sure if accessing it by telnet would make sense, since it's really about file transfer.

From an old HOWTO I gather that anonymous uucp used to use login: uucp, password: uucp and people expected to find a file machine!~/INDEX to see what's there.
@kyonshi

lkh,
@lkh@social.sdfeu.org avatar

@yeti back in the day only neighboring systems needed to know how to reach each other. Bang path's took care of the routing across multiple nodes. With modern MTA's having dropped bang path support things seem to be worse. You need to maintain a sys entry for every system you want to be able to reach @kyonshi

@bobmagicii my guess is that I would use this for something that I wouldn’t care who was spying. Low risk?

bobmagicii,
@bobmagicii@phpc.social avatar

@davidbisset it will be interesting to see what happens after they start getting millions of bounces a day. like say if a bunch of people used this just to get an account started on a website they wanted to be anonymous on. but the site doesn't know it was ultra transient and continues to send notifications to it.

This is the kind of updates I dream about! Also, yes, I view all my emails in plain text and never going back! https://gabrielsieben.tech/2024/05/17/thinking-out-loud-2nd-gen-email/

ArneBab,

@weirdwriter Making the HTML in email lighter would be nice.

Currently it’s an unspecified subset of HTML.

But HTML5 is huge. Though that’s very much non-intuitive for anyone who doesn’t work with it.

ArneBab,
@ArneBab@rollenspiel.social avatar

@weirdwriter the lightest option would be embedding servo — that can work with most of HTML5.

It has 177 MiB of sources, about 15% of Chromium, but still 177 times my current email client.

My email client: https://www.djcbsoftware.nl/code/mu/
Servo: https://servo.org/

Recommendations for good (and preferably cheapish) own-domain providers, anyone? As far as I know the consensus is still that running your own is prohibitively difficult for reputation reasons, but do correct me if I'm wrong.

@curtispf I cannot fault Fastmail - I ran my own server for almost 20 years and had to finally give in. :( they’ve been great.

Anybody have recommendations for #email providers? I've been using @mailbox_org since 2019 but the service is going downhill. They are outright blocking mail from a number of legit senders, support now takes days to respond and when it does it's not particularly helpful).

I last reviewed mail providers in 2019 here https://changelog.complete.org/archives/9952-review-of-secure-privacy-respecting-email-services .

My criteria -- it must: let me bring my own domain, by privacy-respecting, have reasonable support, not require clients other than IMAP/SMTP. #askfedi

Ever since I quit Google I've stopped receiving junk emails, used to come about 10 a day and would end up in promotions folder, or updates, or socials, which google created. Now, I get nothing. Only newsletters, some of which are industry related so I don't mind them.

I'm looking for a privacy-focused provider with IMAP support. Preferably email-only provider (without calendar or cloud storage integration). No weird spam filtering system, zero-access encryption for data at rest, OpenPGP for encryption, 2FA, custom domain support, no personal info required for signup and accepts payment with cryptocurrency. Plus, it should perform well on the assessment at https://internet.nl/test-mail.

I just had an impressively pleasant customer service experience with @fastmail. Turns out it wasn't even their issue, but they responded quickly and in exactly the level of detail I needed.

It's so sad that it's so uncommon that it's worth tooting about...

@Crell been with @fastmail for a number of years myself now.

Must admit my support experience with them is decidedly mixed. I’ve only had reason to contact their support twice. The first time they took forever to respond, and the response was completely useless. The second time was much better.

At least they do have support though, and to be fair their product itself is great and very good value for money, imo!

@mpldr I got you. I say this as 90% of my spam is some unbelievable marketing offer with no unsubscribe and when I ping the sending domain I get a 404. I'd say it baffles me that Microsoft and Google can't stop spam, but I think it's part of the biz model at this point
