scunning, @brainwane Thank you for introducing @jamey and me! We weren't able to pick any serviceberries because it's slightly too late in the season, but we did have a great conversation and enjoy the native plants at Carnegie Mellon! #CMU #Pittsburgh
SRDas, Sorry to learn of the passing of Prof. Alan Waggoner here in #Pittsburgh a couple of days ago.
He was an all round terrific person, besides being a great scientist. He developed the #Fluorescent Cyanine dyes (Cy3 Cy5 and others in the series) that had a significant impact on biological #imaging , in the 1990sAn #obituary is here:
https://www.freyvogelfuneralhome.com/obituary/AlanStuart-WaggonerHere's a pic I took (in 2018) of the licence plate that used to be in the Molecular Biosensors Imaging Center
dave_andersen, Hah! Just when I was complaining yesterday about the lack of regional solar to absorb some of that hot day electricity demand peak, along comes Summer Lee digging up $2m to put a solar farm on the nine mile run slag heap area.
https://triblive.com/local/epa-earmarks-2m-to-convert-pittsburgh-slag-heaps-to-solar-farm/
Awesome use - the place is horribly contaminated, and this will cover it and reduce stress on transmission lines into squirrel hill. ♥️
codeandsupply, Hey folks, one last entreaty before the #PyConUS hashtag trails off.
We could really use your financial support. Our non-profit #ScholarshipFund is the travel sponsor for #PyCon US 2024.
We've recouped only 4% of what we gave. We're here to serve & happy to do it but could really use some boosts across the fediverse to drive donors so we can do it again.
Pls donate to help more people experience #Pittsburgh through tech conference travel:

And then boost!
PyDataPGH, #PyConUS 2024 in #Pittsburgh is a wrap! We're delighted to welcome the more than 50 new members who signed up for #PyData Pittsburgh during #PyCon.

marcgibbons, Found in the wild. On-brand with #pyconus vibes. #hotmetalbridge #pittsburgh
bitprophet, So far, #PyConUS 2024 in #Pittsburgh has hands down been the best ever PyCon for railfans. Got conf lunch on the third floor balcony just in time for a Norfolk Southern consist to roll by.
darrenpmeyer, Enjoyed a bit of #pittsburgh after the #PyConUS Expo closed. #pyconus2024
SRDas, Decided to give the kids a bit of a treat and perhaps support the not kids anymore but young band nevertheless - #GretaVanFleet playing at PPG Arena in #Pittsburgh
Up in the nosebleed with kids (partners enjoying quiet time at home). Opening act Mirador is pretty good.Stage in darkness lit up with blue lights from high above
Indoor stadium setup with a stage in the distance
SRDas, Oof! Break now before Greta Van Fleet are on.
Looking forward to it. So far, especially with opener act 2, realizing I'm getting old, would much prefer smaller venue. And less 'noise'Lol I guess I'm - this morning I was listening to Rosemary Clooney cooking chicken liver curry* - years old
SRDas, Ok short 25 clip from 1st opening act Mirador
(No idea how this clip sounds)
They were ok - a bit sharp their sound, missing some mid range depth
codeandsupply, Hey #PyConUS! Our non-profit #ScholarshipFund's donation URL didn't make it onto the slides you've been seeing, so please share for visibility.

Lorenanicole, I prefer to think this is a marked kitty crossing here in #Pittsburgh. 🤣🐈⬛🐈😻
asx, @treyhunner @Lorenanicole it’s an instruction for cats to throw up here instead of ruining a carpet!
treyhunner, @asx @Lorenanicole right, but what's the back arrow?!

(H/T to CMU PhD student Matt Butrovich for capturing this. Tornado was around Aspinwall at 4:40pm; now things are spicy in Monroeville)
bitprophet, Portland, OR: "we have lots of bridges!”
#Pittsburgh: “hold my Yuengling 🤣”
(attached photos are, idk. maybe 1/2-2/3 of the bridges immediately near downtown? There's at least another 5 or 6 not visible crossing the Allegheny on the other side of the skyline, and another just down the Ohio to the left.)
(Other #PyConUS attendees: the jaunt across the river to the inclines is SUPER WORTH IT. Grab nearly any bus or hop over to the old train station near the Westin to catch the light rail.)
MaggieFero, @bitprophet Officially 446, the most in the world! https://www.heinzhistorycenter.org/blog/western-pennsylvania-history-pittsburgh-the-city-of-bridges/
MaggieFero, @bitprophet The group I'm at #pyconus with are probably already sick of me saying "446 bridges", one of my favorite fun facts about my hometown 😅
rennerocha, Going to have a beer and eat something at Voodoo Brewing in 10min https://maps.app.goo.gl/nMD8Q2YxkCFmat2D7 If someone wants to join #PyConUS #pittsburgh #beer
davidism, @rennerocha Wish I had seen this a little earlier. It would be great to talk beer and Python. Another night!
scunning, #PyCon attendees who are flying into #Pittsburgh have a $2.75 option for getting from the #PIT airport to the convention center: the #28X #bus.
The ticket machine and door to the 28X are just past baggage claim L, on the left side. You can pay cash, buy a reloadable card, or buy a daily/weekly bus pass.

emocoder, Any good coffee places in #Pittsburgh near #PyConUs?
hpincket, @emocoder Pittsburgh is full of good coffee places. Convive, espresso a mano, inkwell, de fer, constellation, klvn.
Those aren’t super close to the convention center, but they’re not far on the bus
PyDataPGH, @emocoder De Fer ("dee fair") is one of our favorites. It's in Pittsburgh's vibrant Strip District neighborhood, a 15-minute walk or a 3-minute car ride from the convention center.
tulpa, People who are in #Pittsburgh for #PyConUS: There are some nice places to visit while you're here.
National Aviary is my favorite: https://www.aviary.org/
Phipps Conservatory is nice too: https://www.phipps.conservatory.org/
The convention center is in the cultural district, so walk around nearby.
If you like to shop at fun places, especially food, check out the Strip District. Just outside of downtown.
There are also the Carnegie Museums: https://carnegiemuseums.org/
SRDas, They've changed some of the routes, so I ended up on the wrong bus and got off downtown at not my usual spot and had to walk a bit to get to the train station. So here you too can enjoy some nice downtown (or dahntahn as they say in) #Pittsburgh buildings in this lovely blue sky weather
Old Church with two towers and tall skyscraper and blue sky with high white wispy clouds
Old Church with tower and spire with tall skyscraper in 3 buildings behind and blue sky with high white wispy clouds
PyDataPGH, Join #PyData #Pittsburgh for a casual gathering of the local, national, and international PyData community on the sidelines of #PyCon US 2024! Meet up with fellow #DataScience, #MachineLearning, and scientific computing enthusiasts when the world's largest Python conference comes to town.
backpackandsnorkel, Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle is very walkable and many attractions are within walking distance from each other. This self-guided walking tour covers the highlights in architecture, history and culture.
#Pittsburgh https://backpackandsnorkel.com/USA/Pittsburgh/Walking-Tour/
dave_andersen, Went to dinner at smoke taqueria tonight (both the smoked mushroom and grilled cabbage tacos were excellent). But what really made me laugh was their bathroom decor. Zoom in and read the sign.
bitprophet, Drew up vague plans for #Pittsburgh infratourism (tho I may break it up?).
- Start near CC/hotel
- Walk north across Allegheny on whichever bridge has best view
- Board T, ride Red Line thru downtown, then 30min south to where it rejoins Blue/Silver lines
- Take Blue/Silver north to see other ‘arm’. (I’m aware this is probably all boring suburb, but why not make a loop of it.)
- Hop off at Station Square, ride funicular/incline 🆙
- Walk along ridge to other funicular
- G2 BRT back from there.
bitprophet, Might reverse the timeline so the “walk across bridge” part is last and thus optional or easily done at another time. Bad ankle says please be gentle.
ifixcoinops, Are you on here, Suzuki Carry owner in #pittsburgh?
If I didn't have spouse and kid with me I would've waited so I could compliment you on your awesome truck (and ask you things, let's be honest)
you probably wouldn't have been long, with the toolbox in the back and all
ifixcoinops, Set up a cider delivery service out the back of a Suzuki Carry pickup, call it CiderTruck. Big sticker on the side,
"CiderTruck: way better than that other thing, because you get cider"
This time next year we could be millionaires
ifixcoinops, Aye you could spend a hundred grand on Elon Musk's thing, or you could get a Suzuki Carry and ninety grand's worth of cider and drive around calling yourself the CiderTruck, and we'll see who has more fun
colindean, Am I seemingly the ~only person on the Internet who wants a smoke detector with a black casing?
I can only find them from boutique, wired, high-end brands. Nest stopped making the Protect in black years ago, apparently. Owl sells them but my house doesn't have a wired smoke detector system; they're not required in #Pittsburgh.
command_tab, @colindean Careful disassembly and Rit dye, maybe
ifixcoinops, Constructing an emergency dam out of leftover laminate flooring cutoffs on this fine #pittsburgh evening
The edges pound into the ground pretty well if you're pissed off enough
jpm, @ifixcoinops this was me 2 months ago when we had our stormwater drain pipes fixed. It didn’t rain for a month after that
jpm, @ifixcoinops and here is the rather lewd, but only if you have a dirty mind, thread about the shenanigans in my back garden: https://aus.social/@jpm/111956196596296249
