@twizzt@sauropods.win

I am naturalist and macro photography enthusiast. I want to share how I see the tiny things in this world that make life livable. I have a MS in biology which focused on the ecology of plants, their insect herbivores, and the parasitoids that preyed on them.

I may occasionally toot about #chronicPain or #dyslexia but generally only to commiserate with others. You needn't notify my about misspellings as I just don't care anymore...

I almost missed #WeevilWednesday

So here is a broadnosed weevil perhaps in Pandeleteius.

They can't all be crazy weevils...

Today's specimen photos: a Belted Grass-Veneer moth (Euchromius ocellea) and a small wasp of undetermined ID. #Entomology #Insects #Photography #InsectPhotography #wasp #moth

Side view of a very small wasp with a light brown thorax and dark abdomen and head.

@mattfossen or is it an ant? @futurebird @alexwild

Happy #WeevilWednesday

I believe this huge weevil is Heilipus guttiger (corrections welcomed). This genus is referred to as the Avocado girdlers. This critter was found off the walking path at my hotel.

Um yeah... crazy huge colorful flea beetle (Aspicela scutata). Whoever said blue is hard to find in nature didn't study tropical insects. I am really curious though if this is a refraction trick or if this is actual pigmentation. I presume its the latter.

Shhhh! I'm hiding! Hiding in my fluorescent seafoam green outfit with yellow highlights. This is a broad nosed in the genus Compsus bashfully trying to crawl under some moss.

I feel like I am missing a new hashtag...

How about a dead leaf? Well, it will tell you it's a leaf but it isn't. I believe this is a South American Boxer Mantis (Acanthops falcata) and is totally gorgeous. It was difficult to photograph as it really wanted to jump on my hand or camera. What amazing camouflage!

#Insects #Colombia #Nature

Another image of the same specimen from above and to the side to better show off its leaf mimicking ability. The wings are brown and veined and the wingtips are upswept just like a dead leaf. Even on a large green leaf this insect blends in looking all the world like a fallen leaf.

For some reason, that just made me think of Bjork strutting around wearing a thousand mantids as a dress.

This mantis is absolutely stunning though. I took a lot of photos of it. Maybe ill post more in the morning.

And here is a Jewel bug (Polytes velutinus). These were all over the place and very friendly. That sat still for the portrait shoots and didn't even mind being handled.

Still processing thousands of photos, but I'm going to get annoying to some people as I recently got home from vacation. If you don't want to be bombarded with Colombian insects, feel free to block me for a couple weeks. I shall start with this little number. Lyca Numberwing

@MikeDunnAuthor My dyslexia plays interesting tricks on me sometimes. I first read this as church rather than rich. Oddly enough, both work.

From my unfortunate first night out blacklighting 3 years ago with my new camera that I had no clue how to use. I took about 300 pictures and got less than five I could show. But look at the snout on this fellow. Some sort of acorn weevil (Curculio sp). If you are shooting in the dark with a digital viewfinder, you need to turn off exposure simulation and make sure your flash can synk...

My most fun find on today's walk was this Emerald #caterpillar. I looked at this black eyed susan a few times with suspicion then decided to poke the interloping flower. It oddly didn't move. I immediately knew what it was. I usually find these caterpillars later in the year on goldenrod or golden alexander. I believe these wander away to pupate so I have never reared one.

#Insects #Lepidoptera #Macro

A view of the rear end of the same caterpillar.
A side view of the same caterpillar. This image is the easiest to tell its a living animal rather than a dried out flower.

Finally took my camera for a walk again. Between being busy with life and being laid up with back issues, I didn't snap a shot in nearly two weeks. Perhaps a new record for me... Also, trying out a new watermark. It's very plain, but it is also easier to use. I may keep playing with it though as I liked the block design of some of my other ideas.

The same politicians who are voting to repeal child labor regulations will help their kids, legally adults, buy a fridge for their dorm and all the other recommended supplies on the list from the university. Then pack their
“kid” into the SUV for the drive to campus—
one week early for freshman orientation.

That same politician will be glad they didn’t cry until on the drive back home. And then immediately call their kid—

And they probably couldn’t make sense of what point I’m making here.

twizzt,
@twizzt@sauropods.win avatar

@futurebird I'm not sure why, but the fact that it's largely Chinese companies targeting refugee children in America to do extremely dangerous work for them somehow makes it worse in my mind

It's the same MAGA dotards that claim a hard stance on China and securing borders that are bending over backwards to push legislation that will increase illegal migrants and bolster Chinese companies. For example, you can research Smithfield foods. Also see their COVID policies and records.

Major life changes... I am moving to #SriLanka in about two months time, if everything goes according to plan. I know no entomologists or scientists in general from the island. If you are Sri Lankan or know someone, please get a hold of me or put me in touch. I am so excited about this new adventure and would love to hit the ground running.

that's not a yard it's a hate crime

no landscape that isn't:

  • home to sheep
  • in a place called a "highlands" or some such
    -with craggy rocks and rain and wind

should ever ever look anything like that... and even then there ought to be... IDK maybe some clumps of ... clover or... god it's so depressing.

@futurebird @MichaelTBacon My understanding is that English nobles wanted to flaunt wealth and this is the best they came up with...

twizzt,
@twizzt@sauropods.win avatar

@futurebird @MichaelTBacon Ha! In the US, wealth should be measured by how many oak trees you have but only if they are surrounded by foam flower or some other appropriate pupation medium.

@futurebird @grumpasaurus @MichaelTBacon I sure hope phorids get a villainous part.

Where could I find a decent ant aspirator shipping to the US? Searching Amazon for pooter is interesting, but not very useful.

A nose sucker would work with a little modification I suppose.

This Nearctic Carpenter Ant (Camponotus nearcticus) was splayed out on a piece of playground equipment. The air temp was nearing 100F and the ant had no interest in moving. Despite the poor framing, I think shes rather adorable.
