so easy to make fun of Xlon but also, there's probably a multisyllabic german word for the feeling of grief at losing a thing that used to be a source of such connection and delight.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@simonvarwell @nerdseyeview Agree with that, Travel Twitter was great fun and I met lots of interesting people by it. It is sad to leave. Hopefully that vibe will reassemble itself here. Hoping the advent of X will be the thing that allows people to finally cut the knot.

@42GB @tea @stufromoz I think @NarrelleMHarris has a tip here.

I just learned that there's a popular flavor in Australia called "musk", which I, in the US, had never heard of. (This is not a Twitter joke.)

This reminded me of learning about elderflower, which is apparently a popular flavor for things in the UK but which is just about unheard of in the US, and of the gooseberry, still endemic to Northern Europe & very popular, which was deliberately nigh-entirely eradicated from the US about a century ago; and about discovering how China and other places in Asia were just discovering the American cranberry before the pandemic hit; and of how most Americans have never tasted anything that is rose flavored, despite the popularity of rose flavored things across the entirety of mainland Asia.

Is there some list somewhere of interesting flavors popular to certain cultures and unknown in others? Something you could consult for giving international gifts, so you could know what a recipient might find novel and interesting?

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@siderea Blackcurrant is another popular European flavour that's almost unknown in the USA, I believe. Something to do with them being wiped out by a disease a century or two ago.

Also why I still don’t know how to drive a car:

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@skinnylatte Not necessary if you can do without, IMO. Australia is pretty car-centric but @NarrelleMHarris and I live in the centre of Melbourne and public transport is good enough for us to not own a car.

Have been on Mastodon for almost nine months now, and I'm still missing the ability to quote-boost. There are so many times I want to add some context to a post before boosting it to my followers. Useful facility.

Elon says he also plans to get rid of the #Twitter brand entirely. It's difficult to imagine a more ham-fisted move, but he's a master at them.

@lauren My first thought: he'll just make it easier for people to ditch it and start anew somewhere else.

I don't like the concept, the execution, or anything about Barbie, or Ken, or the entire marketed gush about it since the 1960s. I think it's gullible and irritating that people are rushing out to see a movie contrived about a contrivance. Barbie always made young girls insecure about their body image, and they got shit for it, so PR flacks came up with the "role model Barbie" concept. Yes, Virginia, you can be anything you want to be (so long as you're pretty enough, cupcake.") Blech.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@shoq And even with the variant Barbies it's clear that the blonde white one is still the Ur-Barbie.

Weekend read: Around the world in 80 trains by Monisha Rajesh

timrichards,

@cydonian Wasn't a great fan of that, the experiences outside the trains seemed very slight. Her book of train rides around India was better IMO.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@cydonian It strikes me that she hadn't planned much to do along the way, leaving it to chance. That can work to a degree, but it can also lead to dullness.

On a flight to Brisbane with @NarrelleMHarris, who's joining me on my next long-distance rail trip. On Tuesday we're catching the Spirit of Queensland sleeper train north to Cairns, stopping off at Townsville and Innisfail. That's 1,681 kilometres in total on the rails!

Will be posting about the rail journey and the locations we visit exclusively for the patrons of my Patreon, if you're interested in joining: https://www.patreon.com/timrichards

However old or jaded I get, sometimes when I'm walking around town I will see an obviously mutually enraptured couple, holding hands or making out, and I really appreciate that because I know, if there is any kind of monster or zombie attack, they will 100% get eaten first.

"Ad blockers are unethical—ads are how they pay to keep the lights on!”

Exactly. It's how THEY pay to keep the lights on. It's not how I pay for anything. I didn't agree to see ads, although I'm ok with some ads; what I definitely didn't do is agree to be tracked and profiled and have arbitrary third-party code running on my computer just so I could read this awful, pointless, SEO-ified shitfest of an article that doesn't come close to answering the question I was googling.

The concept of a "Counter-Earth" sharing the same orbit as Earth has long been a staple of sci-fi. Just two examples are the Gerry Anderson production "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" (1969) aka "Doppelgänger", and the entire notorious long-running "Gor" series of books and films. - Trojan Planet Suspected of Sharing the Same Orbit as Its Sibling - https://gizmodo.com/trojan-planet-suspected-sharing-same-orbit-sibling-1850660567

Good tips. I do some public speaking about my travels, which generally works well because the audiences feel warmly about the topic and they've chosen to be there.

If you're planning on traveling to Florida, you might want to check your driver's license. The state's Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that some licenses from Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Hawaii, and Delaware are now invalid as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis's crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Fodor's Travel has this advice on how to navigate the restrictions.

I cannot escape the horror. I will never forget the time I had a colossal brain fart and left Manhattan for Florida. My kiwi roommate, a brilliant colorist, stopped in this tracks, turned and looked at me quizzically, then asked, “Why the fuck would anyone want to move to Florida? What exactly are you thinking? ”

He’s been dead a long time, but every time DeSantis opens his mouth, Nick’s question comes back to haunt me.
