I performed my first bisect yesterday, thanks to skills I learned from @vanamerongen at 😁

vanamerongen,
@vanamerongen@phpc.social avatar

@awoodsnet @stevegrunwell unfortunately it’s “van Amerongen”, a dead ordinary Dutch name (not mine or in any way associated to me, lol)

heiglandreas,
@heiglandreas@phpc.social avatar

@vanamerongen Noooooo!!!!!

That would completely cause havoc in (probably not only) my brain....

😁

I won’t normally boost without alt text, so lemme summarize: four photos of several dozen attendees enjoying a meal at Portillo’s after the conference. Some are wearing novelty hot dog hats, and all appear to be having a great time.

@stevegrunwell I normally don’t post without alt text. 😬

I’m not sure what happened here, but I’ll fix it when I get a chance. Thanks!

I'm so grateful for the room full of folks looking to deal with their this morning at , thank you!

My slides are available at https://stevegrunwell.com/slides/technical-debt, and the README for the slides include links to all sorts of resources (including the Adapter Pattern blog post I mentioned: https://stevegrunwell.com/blog/adapter-pattern)

When I was revamping "Up to my Eyeballs in Technical Debt!" talk (11am Central tomorrow morning here at !) I wrote a whole section on the , which I then had to cut out for time.

I ended up writing a blog post about it instead, which I just published: https://stevegrunwell.com/blog/adapter-pattern/

Hey , less than two hours until we talk about on the . Be there or be…in another session more aligned with your interests and/or learning goals.

Or taking time for yourself (remember: we’re only halfway through the conference and it’s important to pace yourself).

Or building lifelong friendships with fellow attendees.

I hope you spend the 3pm hour with me, but however you choose to spend it I hope you enjoy!

Let’s say you have 100 people, all equally skilled.

You have 1000 units each of bugs and new feature work. Each person can make progress on one unit per day.

How long will it take to address all bugs and complete the new features?

(1000 bugs + 1000 features) / 100 = 200 days, right?

Not if you have an MBA, it seems. Those features are critical, so I’ll give you 80 days.

Oh, and the bugs, too. Otherwise you DNME.

I just shaved 120 days off, why are people upset?

@grmpyprogrammer oh, I never said this was my company leadership. I do talk to—then get righteously upset on behalf of—other people occasionally 😅

I’m sorry, but you can’t claim “I don’t follow politics” in America in 2024. Either you’re for democracy or you’re deep in trump’s asshole; there is no middle ground.

If you truly don’t care, a) I wish I could live in your naive, fantasy world and b) please vote for the guy who didn’t attempt an insurrection. Consider it a favor for my daughter and every other little girl who doesn’t want to grow up to become a forced-birth baby factory.

sarah,
@sarah@phpc.social avatar

@stevegrunwell you can ignore politics in 2024. You just need to be white, male, cis, rich, healthy, employed, married, if you have kids have all boys, and so on.

Everyone else has to care deeply.

Hey, I blogged!

This time, it’s all about value objects.

As a bonus, the banner image is my cat, Taco, peeking out of a drawer. It also happens to be the lock screen photo on my iPad and never fails to make me smile.

Some important context as this news breaks:

#WordPress is an open-source project, available at WordPress.org.

One of its co-founders, Matt Mullenweg, is CEO of #Automattic, which runs WordPress.com and owns #Tumblr.

They can’t sell what they don’t have, so “WordPress” here refers to WordPress.com, not self-hosted WordPress instances.

BUT many self-hosted instances use the Jetpack plugin, which does send data to WordPress.com, so that might be sold 🤬

elfin,
@elfin@mstdn.social avatar

@stevegrunwell Right. WordPress Core is NOT going to be sending your data from your WordPress install for consumption. If that code showed up in Core, this might be an interesting issue.

If you have stuff at Tumblr, WordPress.Com, Blogger, Xitter, FaceBook, the companies can and will monetize it and AI is this weeks darling (read "crap") tech. WordPress.Com is a company like any other.

wget https://wordpress.org/latest.zip is a whole different animal...Until you install that total sack of shit JetPack.

@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

Well, this blew up. 😳

I want to take this opportunity to say that the community is full of amazing people. Some work for , but plenty do not.

Please don’t let the actions of one (albeit prominent) company in the space diminish the hundreds of thousands of hours of labor done by people who have/will never work for Matt.

Hey, you: please stop pluralizing words with apostrophes.

Is this the house where the Smith family lives? It’s “The Smiths” or “The Smiths’ [residence]”, not “The Smith’s”.

ramsey,
@ramsey@phpc.social avatar

@stevegrunwell @heiglandreas Technically, if your name ends in “s,” an apostrophe and an “s” should be added, since your name isn’t plural. So, Chris’s instead of Chris’, but a lot of folks were taught the “wrong” way, and some style guides advocate for the “wrong” way.

stevegrunwell,
@stevegrunwell@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @heiglandreas good point:

Haynes’: belonging to Mr. Haynes
Haynes’s: belonging to the Haynes family
Hayneseses’: how my wife and I say it to make it clear that language is silly sometimes

Don’t get me started on “its” v. “it’s” 😳

This thread pretty much sums up my thoughts on :

While it can be useful for rapid prototyping, too often our prototypes get shipped as “MVPs”, which are then never given the space to really be cleaned up.

As a result, shit like this lives on and we continue the cycle of “front-end needs to be over-engineered so people will respect us!”

Full disclosure: two friends are running this. They’re swell, and I want to see them succeed, so I’ve pre-ordered a couple puzzles.

If you like puzzles and/or have ties to Michigan, I encourage you to do the same!

@stevegrunwell Puzzle 3 of 4 is “out of stock” which is genuinely baffling for a preorder 😅

stevegrunwell,

@linc yes, yes it is!

Maybe everyone’s been picking 3 because it’s like “c” on a scantron?
