OnePlus 12 WiFi Mystery! Why is my phone connecting to an Network?

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45G

CONTROVERSY! It's a little concerning. My phone keeps trying to connect to a mystery network, listed as an ISP WiFi that (to my knowledge) doesn't do business here in California. Has anyone else seen something like this? What's going on?

sslaia,

@SomeGadgetGuy O gosh I hope this isn't another spyware similar to the ones you uncovered on the mini pc.

I love software bug. My Ubuntu system has an extended security maintenance until year 99 (either 25 years ago or 75 years in the future 😀 ).

Premiering now! Had a great conversation with Shannon Morse about my issues reviewing some mini PCs that came pre-loaded with malware. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oH2R3o-EbTA
She offers some GREAT tips and tricks for folks interested in keeping their home networks secure and their data safe!

sslaia,

@SomeGadgetGuy Sometimes I wonder whether there are companies who pre-loaded their hardware with switches or similar solution instead of software/malware. I guess, in the future the trust in OEM, supply chain and retailer will play important role.

I notice that my libvirt VMs have been running slow. Out of curiosity I started one of the VMs with the standard quickemu conf file. The VM ran much faster.

Hmmm... I may use quickemu from now on. Thank you @wimpy for this super solution.

BTW Quickemu can be found at https://github.com/quickemu-project/quickemu

sslaia,

@terence Having experienced a devastating Nias earthquake (28 March 2005, 7.2 SR, west off Sumatra) I become anxious, every time I see graphical stats like this.

It was so traumatic that parts of what happened are erased from my memory. My wife always tells me how I worked with volunteers collecting dead bodies. But I can't recall any of it.

May the people there be spared of such disasters.

Hi @itsfoss Is there any forum for Linux VM on ARM? Since version 13 Android has introduced AVF (Android Virtualization Framework) that can install virtually any OS on Android.

I'd be interested to see a Linux distro running inside the Android VM. It would turn any smartphone with Android 13 and up into a genuine desktop PC when connected to an external monitor, keyboard and mouse.

It's a pain to download data from the cloud. Last week I downloaded all photos from Google Photos. However Google didn't let me download it all at once. Instead it split all in 63 zip files. Not only I had to download them one by one manually, the download process often got disconnected and every other files I needed to re-log in with username and password. It took me two days!

I have learned my lesson. From now on I keep my files offline to avoid pain in the future.

Microsoft added a new "Generative Erase" feature to the Windows Photo app! Let's see how it compares against Google's Magic Eraser!

https://somegadgetguy.com/2024/02/23/microsoft-generative-erase-vs-google-magic-eraser/

Even cooler, it seems the first devices to support the new eraser are Windows on ARM laptops and tablets!

LibreOffice 24.2 is a must-try.

https://news.itsfoss.com/libreoffice-24-2-is-here/

sslaia,

@itsfoss I like this naming system (which Ubuntu also uses). I wish the Android version number adopted the same system, and other companies: Pixel 24, ZenFone 24, OnePlus 24, etc. and Intel i7 24, Ryzen 5 24, etc. It's easier to know which year they were released.

It's a STUNNING return to form. The OnePlus 12R is a proper "flagship killer" for North America.

It's a price-to-performance that Samsung and Apple really have no answer for...

sslaia,

@SomeGadgetGuy I still have a favourable memory about the flagship killer phone started by OP a few years ago. However the world has changed (or my world view has changed). We give a lot of value to sustainability and environment nowadays (probably because I live in Europe). So spending £500 on a flagship phone that's only supported for one year is not an easy choice anymore.

Just finished watching Samsung Unpacked.
"A new era for Mobile AI!"
Ugh.

This is going to be a minor iterative year for Galaxy Fans. The hardware is only getting small changes. The major claims about AI mostly come from Google Gemini (which Google PAINSTAKINGLY kept reiterating would be on "android" phones, not just Galaxy phones).

And we glossed over a lot of the things that might impact folks daily use, like Exynos chips vs Qualcomm chips.

When pocket computers are THIS expensive, I think we need to see more than a handful of translation features and photo editing tools.

We did get a sneak peek at this new Galaxy Donut CG render though. So that was cool.

sslaia,

@SomeGadgetGuy "When pocket computers are THIS expensive, I think we need to see more than a handful of translation features and photo editing tools."

This resonates with me. I used to buy flagship phones. Last year I skipped for the first time, because I think if I only need that device for social media and Internet browsing, why would I spend so much?

I'd justify buying an expensive phone, if that phone can do a proper desktop mode and replace my laptop while away from home.

Lex had a school project to interview a relative about what it was like growing up. It was like five basic questions. She interviewed her Great Grandmother (my Nana), and the two talked for 40 minutes over the phone.
I recorded it all. Just a lovely little moment to have for her. I'm so glad I have a copy of her voice, and a few stories of our family history 😊🥹

sslaia,

@SomeGadgetGuy Is the interview auto transcribed by Google as seen on the screen?

My current daily driver is the OnePlus Open, and man, I can't get over how good it feels to use!

The crease is basically invisible when the screen is on unless you look at it from an extreme angle, the phone itself is relatively light and compact compared to other book-style foldables, and the outer display has an aspect ratio that isn't too tall or wide.

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman can you do productivity work on it? Does it have the desktop mode?

I'd think it's irrational to buy such an expensive device only for watching YouTube and reading manga.

While digging through the Pixel 8's device tree the other day, I discovered some features that were scrapped before launch.

These include 8K video recording, 480fps slo-mo videos, and sadly display output. Full details in this Android Authority article: https://www.androidauthority.com/pixel-8-features-scrapped-3375014/

I'm hoping at least the display output feature can be re-enabled in the future!

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman The lack of DP Alt holds me back from purchasing a Pixel 8. I was on the edge. I really like the Ready For on my Moto Edge 30 Ultra and want to have similar desktop mode if I move back to Pixel

Interesting: Google Play Protect will apparently soon perform real-time threat detection for newly installed "unknown" apps.

Currently, if you sideload an app that hasn't already been scanned by Play Protect, Google Play will ask you to submit the app to Google for analysis. It seems that soon, Play Protect may also perform some local analysis of the unknown app, though I don't know how/what it'll check for.

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman can users refuse to upload the sideloaded up to Google?

Qualcomm has published documentation on how to prepare, optimize, and execute the Stable Diffusion model on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2-powered Android devices using Qualcomm's AI Engine Direct SDK.

They previously only had instructions on how to do this for Windows on Snapdragon devices, but now docs are live for Android as well.

Funny how that works.

@rbreich Across the pond the Sainsbury's CEO earned £4m while the workers were paid £11 (if they worked in London). I think he worked 2000 times harder than the workers.

The latest version of Google Play Services (v23.35.14) suggests you'll be able to locate some devices on the Find My Device network even when they're powered off or out of battery.

"Find My Device can also use the network to help locate this device when it’s powered off or out of battery."

This lines up with what Kamila Wojciechowska reported back in April. She said that Google was working on adding support for locating Pixel devices even when they're powered off.

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman I kind of like the idea. Because until now the internet has to be on, not only the power.

It's official: October 4, 2023 is when the Pixel 8 series (and likely the Pixel Watch 2) will be announced.

Looking forward to hearing more about these new devices!

(Display output on a Pixel, finally!)

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman the only thing that makes me excited is the "display output". I have been trying out the Motorola Ready For and I want to see a similar solution on the Pixel. I really wish I could travel one day, leave my laptop at home and do my browser centric productivity on my phone.

Saw this news article shared on Reddit a few hours back. A Taiwanese media outlet is reporting that the Zenfone 10 will be the last phone in the Zenfone series, following an organizational restructure within ASUS.

Hasn't been confirmed yet, but it would be really unfortunate if true. ASUS makes some pretty unique phones and ZenUI is really clean.

Source: https://finance.technews.tw/2023/08/25/asus-pc-commercial-compute/

sslaia,

@MishaalRahman What a pity if that happens. HTC and LG are gone and now Asus too. Although I have to admit that their latest marketing (Big in hand) doesn't attract me at all. They should give a reason to get the phone more than only its small size.
