There is no war that can be fought with a trapped civilian population. That is not war. If you destroy all infrastructure, bomb the hospitals, ban all media, disrupt the food supply and corral the remaining population into a tiny area and then go after them. That is not war.

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@Patricia Are you unaware that the displaced civilians have mostly evacuated Rafah to designated safe areas in Khan Yunis and Deir al Balah? Perhaps your media sources are failing you.

Assertion: it is more difficult to review and fix LLM-generated code than it is to write the code correctly yourself. Using AI to generate code is transferring the intelligence of coding from writing to reviewing.

If #Mojo🔥 can fix #python’s stupid versioning problems then it wins by default.

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@rcelectron @nedbat I have 4 versions of python 3.x installed on my machine because scripts written by people (including me) for the one on their machine don’t work in other versions, forward or backwards. It’s absurd.

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@nedbat @rcelectron For me it’s very much the language. Changes in the language between versions have made the scripts using basic language features fail on next or previous versions of the interpreter.

A customer service rep on the phone tried to verify my identity by asking me the security questions on my account. I tried to explain that they are random characters and I don’t know what they are, but she could not wrap her mind around that. I eventually had to hang up because I couldn’t answer her questions.

Anyways, phone-based identity confirmation is terribly broken, at least in the US.

I’d like tv subtitles without sound descriptions. I can hear the sound effects, I can’t understand the dialogue. I don’t need “dramatic music” or “car door shuts”. Which streaming service will figure this out first?

Hey #Apple? Get ready to swoop in for the fire sale!!! 😂😂

#Tesla bear says it's poised to 'go bust' because it's too vertically integrated, which is a 'brilliant model when you grow' but not when you have your worst quarter in years - FORTUNE

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@jann He’s actually right for once. Most automakers consider a car sold when it is delivered to a dealer. Since Tesla is the dealer, when cars aren’t selling they have that inventory sitting on their books.

Aside from the IFUNC mechanism (which doesn't and won't support, btw), the one way for libraries that get linked but not used to run code is as global constructors.

Wouldn't it be nice if distros could just audit for which libs have global ctors, and apply greater scrutiny to pulling ones that do into sensitive programs?

Well...

The team responsible for the FaceTime app on tvOS needs a VERY stern talking-to. Just for starters, take a look at the menu that appears when trying to start a call with a person.

Now imagine if it actually showed the emails or phone numbers for any of these choices. But no, you just have to guess! It’s on a giant TV screen! There’s plenty of room! It is MADDENING!

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@siracusa I’ve never had continuity drop during a call. My Apple TV is hooked up to Ethernet, maybe that’s a factor.

For the first time, President Zelenskyy has publicly stated a figure on the death toll of Ukrainian soldiers since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@w7voa Obviously terrible, but much better than expected. 400,000 Russians dead so far, so a 13:1 KIA ratio.

Why does this look like a modern-day picture made to look old?

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr With film cameras things tended to be more composed. You wouldn’t waste a shot when the kid was not posing. The further back you go, the more rare candid shots become. The kid not participating and dad smiling despite knowing the shot isn’t ready seem incongruous to the period.

Fun Fact: Without proper maintenance, particularly tritium replenishment, the typical nuclear weapon has an effective usefulness interval far less than the edible lifetime of the average Twinkie. OK, now officially, Twinkies only have a shelf life of a month and a half or so, and nukes need their tritium replenished perhaps every few years. But you be the judge.

shac,
@shac@ioc.exchange avatar

@lauren I believe the US stockpile has a five year maintenance schedule. After the collapse of the USSR, Soviet-era nukes got no maintenance for at least a decade, and possibly never resumed. There’s a good possibility that none of those weapons are operable today.

Around 2011 I asked a director at Apple who was responsible for these things why we don’t make an Arm-based Mac. His answer was that the two most popular Mac applications were Chrome and Office, and neither one will port to Arm.
Since then Microsoft has embraced running everywhere. Meanwhile, Google is still leveraging Chrome to hurt Arm transitions of competitors. https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/111824007786600381

My neighbor passed away on Monday after a long illness. He was a Meta employee. He took time off for treatment. After his long term disability coverage ran out he was told he must return to work or leave the company. He could not return to work due to being terminally ill with brain cancer. He died leaving his family no benefits from Meta, no disability insurance payout, because they forced a dying man to leave his job.

If your build instructions require a hundred steps, maybe just write a script that does them and include it with the code.
